Some of the nicest people in the world also live and work in Mt. Airy, especially the folks at the Surry Arts Council who put on this great festival, if you've never been there for Mayberry Days or just to visit, I highly recommend it for a vacation, you'll be so glad you went!! Not only in the mountain counties but even right cheer in the big city of Charlotte. I have a good friend (one of my flying buddies) that bears a good resemblance to Brisco Darling that has a still in Charlotte and runs off a batch ever now and agin. He is from the mountains and migrated down to the city (I wonder what causes that) he wears bib overalls, has a long beard and hair and enjoys the simple things in life. I have tasted his shine and personally think all shine taste like a cross betwixt paint thinner and finger nail polish remover. But each to his own. Iffin I'm gonna drink, I jest as soon it taste good, so I stick to fresh brewed Ice Tea, sweetened of course with genuine real cane sugar, nothin artificial. oh well enough ramblin for now. Hiddy all! I just love this digest! I always notice things that I mean to bring up, but by the time I compose my post, sometimes I forget things I wanted to ask all of you trained noticer's about! Here's one: "Another question...I know this was asked a long time ago but wasn't Mayberry in a dry county? So how come Ben said he sold spirits at his store? It just don't make no sense a'tall" Pauline, I am so glad you asked that question! I think of it all the time, but always forget to ask the exact same thing when I post! I've been wondering about this one for a while now. Anyone have an answer? "Say hello to your Daddy, now."- Barney to Cousin Virgil as he boards the bus headed to Macon Stephanie 'It's me! It's me! My husband is a butcher, and the item he uses to sharpen his knives is called a steel. Can somebody help me out????? Thanks for the help!!! ......some of us got it and some of us ain't.... Dear Paul... Excuse me, but did you really mean to say "whatever that is", like you DON'T KNOW??? Never thought I'd see the day when you didn't know something related to "TAGS". Let me just say that I appreciate you mentioning that you didn't know. Makes a body feel a little less ignorant. Hi Y'all! In the episode with Cousin Virgil, I thought it odd that Virgil could get Otis out of the cell because "nobody was watching"...altho he did have an 'audience' when he spilled stuff at the dinner table and dumped that meatloaf in Andy's lap.... "nobody was watching" when he messed up them jailkeys! or when he backed the squad car into Andy's garage, etc..... Just an observation..... guess ol' Virg was just best at carving wood figures and being on the 'fun' side of Barney's family. Also, I'm glad someone cleared up the Rance Howard case for me .... that's a bit of trivia I didn't know.. that he was Ron Howard's dad and was the bus driver in the episode! makes ya think! (More of 'Barney's Blarney', as Jim Clark has in his book, i.e. kleptomenerac, compelsion, etc.) Whipcord is (according to Webster) "cloth made of hard twisted yarns and has a fine diagonal cords or ribs." It would make sense to have Police uniforms made from whipcord. I've heard The Mayberry Deputy's uniform is made from whipcord. Hey Guys, Remeber a few letters ago and everyone was talking about Barney littering in the episode where Barney thinks Andy is getting a new deputey? Well did anyone catch the scene of Barney littering in "The New Mayor" episode last night? Just wondering. Steve "thanks for asking me to stay and have a sandwich" Mitchell ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Mar 2001 10:01:45 -0600 From: Dawn Biegelsen <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Andy's comic influences While watching "Mr. McBeeVee" the other night, a question popped into my head -- hopefully it's a topic that has not been "done to death" by some of the long-time members of the Digest. Here goes: Which comedians influenced Andy early in his career, esp. preceding the TAGS era? When Andy and Barney were outside the Taylor home looking for Opie's imaginary horse, Blackie, Andy struck a pose that reminded me of Jack Benny (resting his face on his hand, with his other arm crossed over his middle; rolling his eyes and grinning in a funny way). Had Andy ever worked with Jack Benny? I am too young to remember the radio/pre-T.V./early T.V. era, but that Jack Benny pose is unmistakeable. Any thoughts? My personal preferance was to mix it with instant iced tea mix,so's I wouldn't go blind by imbibin' it straight.'Course, those days are long behind me and I certainly wouldn't recomend it to anyone. After 1 or 2 glasses your productivity level will sho' nuff suffer for a few days.I'm awful glad I nipped that habit in the bud!!!!
