I seem to remember Jerry Van Dyke say that one of his professional regrets
was that he was offered the replacement role for Barney, but turned it down
(in favor of something else I believe). I want to say that Jerry had "My
mother the car" in the works by then. I guess Andy thought quite a bit of
Jerry as he did eventually costar with Andy on "The Headmaster."
As a sideline, Jerry's other regret was that he also turned down the role of
Gilligan

Weas, I do believe we had $8.00 pledged to the All Andy All the time network.
Folks were all pumped up after the fandamonium weekend then interest fell
off. We had some new blood show interest after this last marathon but no,
money amount was mentioned. I think we need a campaign director. Anyone
interested? It will be well worth the effort to establish an Unending Andy
channel. I might never sleep again! Barb

My choice would have been Tim Conway for Barney's replacement - he's pretty
good with a gun. Who would we get for his girlfriend? - Maybe Lydia
Crosswaithe from Greensboro would be interested since Goober took up with
Flora from the diner.

Hey all! I've not been a member very long and maybe this has been addressed,
but was just wondering if ya'll had paid any attention to how many times
Barney has been "slapped" by other characters. >>
Seems like big Jeff Pruitt whopped him a couple of times and Skippy shoved
him out the door saying, "Bernie, you're a scream". Barney sure was easy to
move around. He weighed less than 135 lbs unless he was wearing a log chain
around his neck.

TAGS fans,
In case any (OK, most) of you missed Barney's appearance yesterday in
the comic strip "Cottage & CO" you can see it online in the C&C Archives.
Just go to http://www.burtcottage.com/Sams_Place/topic.html and click on
the link where it says "Barney Fife". If you look around the topics page
you'll find some other Mayberry references as well.

Subject: Barney being slapped
The question was asked about Barney being slapped (on the back or
otherwise). One that stands out and is a very funny episode is when Jeff
Pruit comes to town to find a bride in 2 days (aka the Skipper on
Gillagan's Island) and he picks Thelma Lou. He slaps Barney so hard on
the back he bounces forward then jumps out of the way when Jeff tries to
do it again. Also, the "fun girls" were so loud and forward they probally
hit Barney on the back, too.Ernest T. COULDN'T hit Barney because as Andy
and Helen put it, "He'd kill you". Gomer: Well whatever it was it
didn't sound like no baseball! Blountville,Tn.

Hmmm, I'm thinking that might be the one time where the license tag

>>>I know several of you are, like me, fans of both TAGS and the original
Star Trek. While watching a ST episode called "The Paradise Syndrome" the
other day, it struck me that the "Indian" village looked a whole lot like
Myers
Lake. Does anyone know if it is?
I always enjoy pointing out Floyd's barber shop in the ST episode "City on
the Edge of Forever" to my friends--no one can believe it!
- - --Aunt Bee in Ohio
>>>
I'm 99.9% sure that that Star Trek episode was filmed at Myers Lake
(actually Franklin Canyon Reservoir in real life).
Another episode of ST:TOS (that's "Star Trek: The Original Series" for you
non-Trekkers) that was filmed on the Mayberry backlot was "Miri." This one
is unusual, in that it includes a sort of aerial shot of downtown Mayberry,
a camera angle which we never saw on TAGS. The prop department also
"trashed" Mayberry to make it look like a slum. For those who are
interested in seeing this episode, any large video store should have all of
the classic Star Trek episodes available for rent. Look for the Mayberry
Courthouse when Kirk and company first beam down to the planet, and later
the Palmerton Cafe, which can be seen clearly in "The Arrest of the Fun
Girls" and "Banjo-Playing Deputy" (the school crossing scene). Michael J.
Pollard (Cousin Virgil)
has a prominent role in "Miri" too.

I think you probably saw the Franklyn Pharmacy, 109 Main Street. The bus
stop is right out front.
Other pharmacies in town besides Walker's are Mrs. Mason's (Barney took his
film there in "The Great Filling Station Robbery"), and Crawford's (Opie got
a job working the lunch counter). Either there is one drugstore that
changes hands every couple of years, or there are lots of other drugstores
in town.

All of us know just how much effort Allan Newsome, our prince of a web
master, puts into this newsletter and we all 'preciate it obligingly! And we
all know just how up on his TAGS trivia Paul Mulik is but has anyone taken
the time to study on his database???? We all feel each other's pain when
someone asks who played what charactor or how many different charcters
so-and-so played. If you head over to
http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/index.htm and choose "Cast Member/Episode
Title Database", then without entering any information, just click "SEARCH
FIELD" you'll get a complete layout of all the episodes, the characters and
their actors' names. You can highlight the entire database, and paste in an
EXCEL spreadsheet. Then you can sort to any column. And there you have it,
every answer you could possibly have for WHO'S WHO in and on TAGS! Don't
under 'preciate your resources! They're nice, real nice!!!! Thanks Allan and
Paul. My what a friendly place this is.

Just wanted to say I sure did appreciate the info on the deputy shirt.
I just got my first Mayberry book this week, The Road Back to Mayberry and I'm
expecting my Mayberry Sheriff cruiser any day now. And since my birthday is
in six weeks, I'm directing anyone who will listen and has a computer to all
the Andy pages and telling them my wish list. Hope it helps. :)
Haven't seen anyone mention this but our very own TAGS alumnus Gomer will be
the Fandemonium star on TVLand next weekend. And yes, they will be showing
the shows with Andy, Opie, Aunt Bee and Goober. I think the Goober and Aunt
Bea episodes are even going to be shown twice.
Alert for all you trained noticers: I may have been hanging around Otis too
much, but I would swear on the Gomer episode where Aunt Bea comes to visit him
the Marines are watching her on a TV show. One of the Marines in that scene
looks an awful lot like Tom Selleck. Can someone tell me if if is? Hope I
haven't violated the rules here by asking that question. I'm not a Selleck
fan, it's just this guy looks so much like him and I haven't been able to find
any source to confirm it.
I also wanted to mention that I had a major Mayberry moment the other morning.
I was watching a movie called Wake Me When It's Over. There was Parley Bear
(Mayor Stoner), Robert Emhardt (Mr. Turner and Man in a Hurry) and last but
not least our own beloved and in this movie, a bespectacled Barney playing I
guess, a morale officer. Stayed up till daylight to watch it all but it was
worth it.
Off to bed. Need to store up sleep for my major Gomer watching this weekend.
All the best to you and yours.

Hey, Robin, didn't Mrs. Mason also have a drug store? I think I remember
hearing Barney say that Gomer was to take the film over to Mrs. Mason's drug
store to get it developed in the episode where Jimmy was thought to be
robbing the filling station.
