We had SUCH fun listening to Andy's stories!!!! By the way, he also used old Bob Newhart "history stories" , also. Did any of you out there have a wonderful history teacher that used Andy's albums and stories to teach and enhance history? I would like to know. hey from the "slightly-budded-greened-out-treed" Ozarks ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 06 Apr 2001 10:20:27 -0500 From: Paul Mulik <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: episode titles >>>I think the titles at that time were more like literary titles...like a short story. I don't think they ever thought they would be so scrutinized. >>> Not only that, but I don't think the public was ever meant to know the titles at all. Every episode has to have a title for production and copyright reasons, but unlike Matlock (and many, many other shows), on The Andy Griffith Show the titles never appeared on the screen. - --Paul ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 06 Apr 2001 10:43:40 -0500 From: Paul Mulik <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: comics >>>Barney is always telling Andy that he belongs in the funny papers, but the end is usually different. One time it's the 'Kat's and Jammer Kids', another time he tells Andy to put on a dress. It's actually Katzenjammer Kids, a very early comic strip first published in 1897. It holds the distinction of being the longest-running comic strip of all time (it's still in syndication today). Visit www.kingfeatures.com for more info. Other early comic strips mentioned on TAGS include Little Orphan Annie, Moon Mullins (Emmy Schmaltz was a character in this strip) and Andy Gump. While we're on the subject, has anyone ever heard of Frick and Frack, outside of TAGS? Barney once says to Andy, "You're almost as funny as Floyd. Why don't you two team up? Call yourselves Frick and Frack." Perhaps this is a reference to a real or imaginary vaudeville act (like Mr. Bones and Mr. Jones). The other day I saw a "Frick and Frack" window sticker on the back window of a pickup truck. Judging by the other stickers on the window, I guess there's a rock band using this name nowadays (maybe one of you younger members can fill us in here?) BTW, just for fun I tried www.frickandfrack.com and it turned out to be a gift shop. - --Paul ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 06 Apr 2001 10:17:09 -0500 From: Paul Mulik <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Colby >>>I thought the first Floyd's last name was Colby. In the episode where the Hollywood producer comes to make the movie, that's what is painted on his window. Sober Tom Silbee >>> You are correct that the name "Colby's" is painted on the barber shop window in "Mayberry Goes Hollywood," but no one ever addresses Floyd by that name. It is possible (even probable) that the first Floyd was named Colby, but it's also possible that some long-ago barber was named Colby, and the next barber to come along continued the name for a short time (you know, like McDonald's. Who'd want to eat at Kroc's?) BTW, the name Colby is used in just one episode, "Mayberry Goes Hollywood." This is not the same episode in which the first Floyd appears. - --Paul ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 06 Apr 2001 10:30:20 -0500 From: Paul Mulik <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: M. M. If I were a teacher, I would show these episode's to my classes, because Andy sure could get a kid to listen! There's 'Paul Revere's Ride', 'Romeo and Juliet', 'The Headless Horseman'. Anyone else remember any others? >> Well, he did tell a ghost story about the guy's arm that fell off at the camping trip where Gomer and Barney used their pioneer moxie. Not only could Andy get kids to listen - but Otis craved for him to tell a bed-time story so he could go to sleep. On this occasion, Andy - complete in boxer shorts - told about Jack & the Beanstalk. Barney could also tell some tales. One of my favorites is about the prune pitting beasto-maristo - you know, that Winslow girl -ugliest girl he'd ever seen. One thing that got to me was his interest in the strudel usually when I find actors from TAGS on other shows they usually have the same voice as they have used on the show. Hopefully our new cable company will be giving us TVLand after a year or longer of writting notes on the bottom of cable bill to the other company I want TVLAND it might finally happen and yes I'll be in 7th heaven. Most episode titles are spoofs or names of old movies or modeled after them. How many can you name????? Alcohol and Old Lace - Arsenic and Old Lace Cyrano Andy - Cyrano Bergerac Quiet Sam - The Quiet Man Bringing Up Opie - Bringing Up Baby The Merchant of Mayberry - The Merchant of Venice Floyd the Gay Deceiver - The Gay Divorcee High Noon in Mayberry - High Noon The Great Filling Station Roberry - The Great Train Robbery A Black Day In Mayberry - A Black Day At Bedrock My Fair Ernest T. Bass - My Fair Lady Prisoner of Love - Prisoner of Swing The Education of Ernest T. Bass - Eductating Rita Three Wishes for Opie - Three Wishes TV or Not TV - To Be Or Not To Be The Lodge - The Lodger Dinner at Eight - Dinner at Eight Goodbye Dolly - Hello Dolly Just to name a few........ I think the episode that gets the most confusion over its name is Sermon for Today - most people refer to it as What's Your Hurry? I wouldn't change Jailbreak to Chicken Thieves, even if I are one! The Kids aren't in many papers anymore, and many of you probably have no idea what old Barn's talking about, so I thought I'd pass this info along (from a KK website at http://www.geocities.com/~jimlowe/katzies/katzdex.html ): "The Katzenjammer Kids began in December, 1897 and is believed to be the first true color comic strips. "In the early decades of the strip's existence, the Katzenjammer family engaged in adventures all over the world. Ultimately, they settled on a tropical island. But, wherever they were, the continuing and repeated theme centered around the ability of Hans and Fritz to pull creative pranks, get into trouble as a result, and end up being hunted down or spanked over someone's knee in the last panel." There are a lot of TAGS related things in those shows. There was one shocker for me. It was an episode where Colonel Harper wanted someone to take his daughter, who was home from college, to a dance. Of course Gomer was chosen. But the shocker came with the closing credits. Colonel Harper was portrayed by none other than Karl Swenson - Mr. McBeevee. And the cool Irish accent was GONE! I hadn't had a shocker like that since I found out a few years ago that Santa Clause may not be real! I guess I didn't recognize him without his shiny silver hat and twelve extra hands and no smoke coming out of his ears. But it was still rather exciting to see some of the TAGS cast on Gomer Pyle! HEY! Maybe we can have a site, if there already isn't one where there's a list of the TAGS cast who also made appearances on Gomer Pyle! And it can be added to by the readers! Will you help us? **Barn It is a true art to be able to accept and understand the defiance of common logic. ------------------------------ End of wbmutbb-digest V3 #107 ***************************** ************************************************** ~ Visit our sponsor ~ Weaver's Department Store ~ http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/weavers/ ************************************************** You must send your comments to the Digest from the address you used to join WBMUTBB or your message will not be posted.
