According to Tim Conway's voice-over promo on TV Land just before it aired, it indeed was the only time they ever appeared together. Conway even gave the numbers of episodes in which each character appeared, and told everyone to pay attention to such a historic moment! It must have struck others too as odd that Andy and Uncle Ollie had to share Andy's bed when Ollie and Nora came to Mayberry for a visit. Don't the Taylors have a guest room? Otis did his time there; Mr Wheeler stayed in the guest room for days; Andy's cute cousin was a guest room tenant; Gomer stayed when he lost his filling station job (and back room lodgings). However, in "Man in a Hurry" Opie says that he would be sleeping on an ironing board between two chairs so that Mr Tucker could have his room. That guest room seems to come and go. To the writers I might ask, "Gentlemen! Just what are you trying to pull off here anyway?!" ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 May 2001 10:15:01 -0400 From: "Sizemore, Anthony M (Tony)" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Barney Smoking How about when Barney got choked smoking the peace pipe while he was playing Naugatuk in the town play. It was lit. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 May 2001 10:16:29 -0500 From: "Monty & Kristi" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Andy Smoking I'm probably late on this, but Andy also smoked on the Mr. McBeeVee episode after talking with Opie and trying to get him to say "Mr. McBeeVee is just make-believe." As he came down the stairs he took out a cigarette and lit it and began smoking. Barney questioned Andy if he believed in Mr. McBeeVee, and Andy said, "No, but I do believe in Opie." When we used this episode for our Bible Study, we pointed out that the smoking could've been a result of Andy struggling with what to do or believe. If I remember correctly, Barney is yelling at the three of them. Otis is trying to be sober and serious, Gomer has a blank look on his face and Floyd (Howard MacNear) is trying his best to supress a laugh. If I'm wrong its because I was out late at the Kit Kat Club again last night with Daphne, Skippy and Al. I think it only lasted 1season, and got horrible ratings. >>> That was "Headmaster," and as you say, it was not a success. Only 13 episodes were produced, at which time Andy tried to recapture the small-town magic with "The New Andy Griffith Show," which also flopped. Back in those days, when a new show was picked up by a TV network, the studio normally produced 13 episodes (enough for three months). If the show didn't attract viewers, it was cancelled. Usually, for a show to make it into syndication, it has to last at least three seasons. There are a few exceptions, such as The Honeymooners, which lasted only one season as a series in its own right (The Honeymooners began as a segment of Jackie Gleason's variety show - these segments later came to be known as "lost" episodes). - --Paul ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 04 May 2001 09:13:27 -0500 From: Paul Mulik <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Floyd and Gomer >>>I recently watched the episode where Barney mistakenly thinks that Andy and Helen are engaged and I was wondering: Is this the only episode in which Gomer and Floyd appear together. >>> Yes, and it's too bad, because they would have been great as a team. Both characters appear in "Andy Saves Gomer," but not together in the same scene. Floyd is in the opening scene where Andy reads a letter from Barney. I just visited Mt Airy, NC. Great place! There was no mention of Any of Andy's relatives living there. I did hear some of the natives say they were disappointed that he never comes back home. Some said that they thought he was ashamed of his home town and the people there. I was wondering if anyone knows anything about this. I hear he lives in Manteo, NC, a far piece from the mountains. Does anyone know know what he does with his time. Is he in good health? Does He have children? Any family back in Mt Airy? Blessings to all! Floyd: "read it out loud, Barney"... Barney, smiles sweetly and as if he's about to read a long inscription, says: "Five" i just LOVE that!!!! also, don't know if there's any significance or trivial trivialities here.... but, i bet it would be interesting to see how many people know the names on the wallboard behind Barney & Andy at the end of that episode, where they are talking about how big a chain it takes to hold up "one of them dog tags".. !!! "I hate it when you get purposely obtuse!" GA of MS > Aunt Bee looks puzzled, he says, "you know, A & H!".. ha! Aunt Bee picks > right up on it and > says, no, she thinks "A" should tell Opie himself! Then, Barney agrees > and says something > about Opie gettin' used to having "H" as an "M"..... > > Georgia from Mississippi > Hey Georgia, I love that episode! In the scene where Aunt Bee and Barney are talking in code, it get even funnier when, after speaking in code for a few lines, they just use Andy and Helen's names outright. That always cracks me up!! Thanks for the memory! Thank you in advance for your knowledge about TAGS. I want to Thank Jim Clark, Allan Newsome and Ken Beck for doing everything they can to promote TAGS. The class reunion of Andy and Barney was in at least two episodes. What was the two different years shown on the banner at the reunions? The first reunion was in a black and white episode and the other was a color episode. I have another question what was the name of the lady in charge of getting the reunions put together, was her name MaryLee or MaryLou? Also who played the part? In the first reunion episode "The Mayberry Union High" year-book had Barney's name as Bernard Milton Fife, didn't Barney have a different middle name or different middle initial in earlier or later episodes? Also Andy's name was Andrew Jackson Taylor, was this the only time his middle name was mentioned? Was Thelma Lou in both episodes about the high school reunions or was she just in color episode?
