After reading your appraisal of the article about Barn and Ang, from a
psychiatric point of view, I went directly to the site. I'm not sure that we
folks at wbmutbb are ready for an article like that one. It was analytical
all right - - it was also off the wall! Those were some nasty adjectives
used about our Mayberry family. I didn't rightly take kindly to it either!
Of course, I noticed that particular web site had some other mighty peculiar
things on it, too. Don't reckon I'll be fixin' to go back there too soon!

Hey Ya'll,
I just got my first TAGS tape (of the second group) from Columbia House. The
first one they sent me was Ellie Walker. I noticed that someone got the list
and that this one should be the second one that I would receive. I'm hoping
that I still get the one that was supposed to come first. Does anyone know
what the trouble might be? The Ellie tape was wonderful and I really enjoyed
watching it!

We've all talked about our favorite lines; "Call the Man!"
How about your favorite silent scenes? Like when the "Man
in a hurry" is asleep in the chair as the camera pans back?
Or when Opie comes back and asks Andy if getting hit in the
nose is going to hurt and Andy looks at Opie and gives him
a hug?
I've got a tape, from Weavers, with 6 hours of shows on it.
The Epiloges and the Prologues are all on it! It's great
to see what TBS (and everyone else) has cut out.
Two silent comedy gems are - in the Haunted House when
Andy, Barn and Gomer all lean over together when Andy picks
up the baseball. Another is in the "Great Filling Station
Robbery" when Barney announces "here is your theif!" and
slap down an 8x10. The look Gomer and Andy exchange is
great!
Any others?

Does anyone know the name of the "Salt N Pepper" suit that Barney wore.
I'm looking to get one and was wondering if they were still available for
purchase.
Thanks!

The proper radio was a Motorola model U-41, with a Sure Ranger Mic.
Several other Motorolas could be used, and in teh lst years, the MoTrac
could have been in place.
If using a GE, go for a Progress Line.
DON'T USE A CB radio, even though the antenna on the car was a CB 102 inch
whip.

Here's another reason to watch the color episodes: during the show's final
season, it was ranked number 1 in the Nielsens, so it must have been doing
*something* right, you think? We *know* Frances Bavier did something right
in 1967-68 because she won an Emmy for her role, during a year when Aunt Bea
learned to fly among other things...

Subject: a funny scene
Hello all.
I was watching the episode tonight where Aunt Bee loses Aunt Martha's antique
pin and laughed out loud at one particular scene. Aunt Bee had found the pin
after getting the insurance money for it. She was so upset at dinner that she
tried to serve dessert first. But the funniest part was where she put the
mashed potatoes on the table and Opie says, "Don't we get any meat or plates
or anything?"
That is one of Opie's funniest lines ever.
Hope someone else is laughing with me at this one!

>>>As far any wages paid to the temps, the good citizens of
Mayberry were probably only too happy to pay an extra penny or two in taxes
for the peace of mind that came with an extra man on the force once in a

And don't forget, Barney promised a 5 spot to Goober, Jud and #3(Otis)when
they helped out one time and Otis thought he deserved more because Barney
ruined his shirt with that tomato.

>>>Subject: Who paid for the food???
Never mind ol' Jeff Pruitt's suits. Who paid for all those breakfasts and
lunches that Aunt Bee supplied to prisoners, guests, and Barney??
>>>
We're told in "Dogs, Dogs, Dogs," that Aunt Bee fixes Otis' meals at Andy's
own personal expense. Barney says they should have a "charge account down
at the lunch room," but Otis claims that he can't eat the food from the
lunch room, as it is too spicy. This scene was always cut out in the past;
I don't know if TVLand has "restored" it or not.

Subject: You left the radio on too?
>>>The TAGSRWC website mentions a Motorola Mo-Trac being the most likely
radio in the squad car, but an Alabama State Trooper told me a particular
model from General Electric could be another candidate. It looks nothing
like the
Mo-Trac, instead it looks like one of those pre-digital police scanners.
BTW, Paul, what year is your car?
Dixon
>>>
My car is a '63.
I took a TAGS video tape down to the local Motorola dealer, and an old-timer
who'd worked there for years confirmed that the one on the show was
definitely a Motorola, but he said he couldn't be sure of the model number.
In a real police car, the main part of the radio would have been mounted in
the trunk, with a smaller unit under the dash (all I have is the dash unit -
I threw away the non-working electrical parts and painted the microphone and
empty housing to match the rest of the interior).
BTW, out of all 249 episodes, the only shot of the radio (to my knowledge)
comes in "Barney's Replacement." It's a very brief shot (less than one
second in duration) during the scene where Barney gives a "technical
explanation" of how the radio works: "You talk in here, and you listen in
here. That's the explanation." When he shows Rogers how to turn on the
siren, we get a very brief glimpse of the radio. In that episode, the siren
is controlled by a toggle switch mounted in the dashboard, directly to the
right of the AM radio. I hooked mine up to the horn, so when I want to
sound the siren, I just push the horn ring. I can change it back to the
regular horn anytime - complete control with just the flip of a switch!

As country as Mayberry was, they might not get but 1 channel back in those
days, but they spent a lot more time on the front porch than in front of the
TV. I remember 5 times the TV was on:
1. When Gomer was the houseguest.
2. To watch the quiz show when Aunt Bee won.
3. Andy and Helen watching while Barney and Goober watched them.
4. When Howard was on Uncle Tim's Talent show.
5. The Keevy Hazelton show when he sang Clara and Aunt Bee's song.
Anybody got any more?

Subject: Al Becker, V. E. (Victim of Editing)
Somebody alluded to Al Becker in yesterday's digest, and this reminded me
that that wonderful dialogue in the episode where Gomer is set up with Mary
Grace Gossage concerning the shaved dog and Al Becker was CUT from the
episode when I last saw it on TVLand. I couldn't believe it! The nervous
chit-chat was the best part of that episode -- Barney refusing to drop the
subject when he couldn't "place" Al Becker. Forgive me if this was all
hashed out before I joined the list, but did Viacom edit the episodes to
allow for more commercial time? In the mid-'80s I lived in Nashville and a
local station showed the unedited episodes, if I remember correctly. While
I'm happy to see the restored "epilogue" or "tag", I miss the bits of
dialogue that have been cut during the episode. And I can tell from the
quotation- and allusion-laden comments in this digest that many of us know
this show by heart! Is anybody viewing the unedited program (other than on
the commercially available videotapes)? Just as sure as Glen Cripe is not a
tenor, I'm not happy about missing even a line or two of that dialogue which
the writers took such pains to get just right! I was on pins and needles
when "The Songfesters" was shown in late April for fear that even a fragment
of Barney's lesson with Eleanora Poultice was going to be cut. Thankfully,
it appears to have been preserved intact. It may be my very favorite bit
from the entire series (though "Ralph Henderson" as one of Big Maud Tyler's
aliases never ceases to send me into convulsions, either).

Subject: Favorite scenes
Too, too many to recount here! There's a favorite scene in each episode.
Some real stand-outs, the ones for which we re-wind the video are...
1. The "Giraffes are selfish" monologue from "Dogs, Dogs, Dogs".
2. The "What's Your Hurry" sermon scene where Barney's (?) head pops up
awake. (Reminds me of my husband when we wore choir robes up on a platform
choir loft. It got "hot, real hot!" and Neil would nod off - until an
exclaimation by the pastor would make his head bob up and he said it felt
like it bobbed to the ground and back! LOL!)
3. Mr. McBeevee - Andy believes in his son, if not in Mr. McBeevee - makes a
mother tear up.
4. Stranger in Town - when Andy shames the town for not accepting Ed Sawyer.
5. Convicts At Large - The hamburger frying scene and the dance scene with
Big Maude Tyler. Floyd Lawson is priceless in this episode.
6. Wedding Bells for Aunt Bee - the marryin' kind of love scene at the end -
the only scene I remember in which Opie's mother is mentioned.
7. Any scene with the Darling Family!
8. Any scene with Ernest T. Bass! (Walk with me Jelsic...)
