RE: Floyd of The Flintsones? two questions ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 19 Jun 2001 07:33:36 -0700 (PDT) From: David & Angela Forbus <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: Courthouse drawing I printed the wonderful drawing of the Mayberry courthouse/jail several weeks ago, but can't remember which site I found it on, dag-nabbitt. I have a few questions about the design: 1) The designer had to take liberties, since it was just a Hollywood set, and we never actually saw the steps up to the Mayor's office. Actually, I remember several episodes when Andy had a meeting with the Mayor, where he went out the front door, like the Mayor's office was in another building. In "The Loaded Goat" episode, Mayor Stoner refers to his office above the courthouse, leading us to believe that there were stairs around the back, or outside. 2) The backroom - Barney's living quarters at times, as well as Andy's, when he was on "duty". I don't recall a 3'-6" indentation for the cot. The cot appears at the back of the room, when in most episodes it was immediately to the left of the door. Also, the entrance from the courthouse to the back room is at a strange angle. I thought it was at 90 degrees. In fact the whole building was at 90 degrees, except for the front of Cell #1. 3) Cell #'s 1&2 - I never saw a water closet (commode) in either of them, and don't really remember a lavatory (sink) in either one, except possibly Cell #2, when Barney locked himself in. Also don't remember the oval table at the foot of the cot in Cell #1 (Otis' cell) The drawing left out the "water crock" between the 2 cells, which Otis spiked. Why did Andy & Barney have to get Otis water, if there was a lavatory in his cell and a crock outside the cell? And they got the water from the back room, leading us to believe that there was some type of lavatory/sink and commode/urinal back there, for the sheriff & Deputy to use, possibly a shower stall. My guess is there was a utility sink, for making coffee, filling up the mop bucket, etc. Where did Andy & Barney go to the restroom? Assuming that the top of the drawing is North, Cell #1 shows the outside "window" sharing with that mysterious 9'-6" x 7'-6" back room. When we saw Barney hook up the rope to to the window bars to get Otis out, in "Cousin Virgil", the window was on the left, or West side, which would place it in the building which bordered the courthouse, for awhile, Floyd's Barber Shop. 4) The area where Barney's bulletin board resided, with stairs behind it, shows a 4" stud wall, when we know there is a heating diffuser from the basement, (from the episode with Don Rickles) which would require a much larger chase wall for the smoke to vent through the roof. Other than these discrepancies, I love that layout. Just can't remember where I found it. Also love the map of Mayberry. It still wasn't his last, though...I believe that would be the one about the rent going up at his barber shop, putting him at odds with Howard Sprague. Very sad to see him go that way... BTW, did you notice the young apprentice in that episode being a young Rob Reiner?? Well, I saw Frances Baviers (its in Siler City) and Howard McNears in LosAngeles. It made me sad to see such a small headstone for a man who made so many of us so happy. I heard a 1949 episode of "The Great Gildersleeve" on Radio Spirits that prominently featured a barber named Floyd. No,he wasn't played by our incomparable Howard McNear, but I wondered if one of the creators or writers of TAGS had perhaps been a Gildy fan and had chosen to repeat the name for Mayberry's own barber. I have to admit that this is getting pretty far down the list of trivial trivialities, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if one of the folks on this Digest had come across the answer somewhere along the way. Does anyone know >(and I know someone does!!) if Howard McNear was ever a voice on The Flintstones? >Fran I had a similar experience Saturday. My daughter was watching an episode of "The Jetsons" and I heard the unmistakable voice of Howard Morris. He was doing the voice of a character called "Jet Screamer," who was a pop star Judy Jetson had won a date with in a song-writing contest. And he sang. No, it wasn't "Eatin' Goober Peas." It was "EEP APP ORK AH-AH." I told my daughter, who is 5 and very familiar with TAGS and Ernest T., that the person doing the voice was "Ernest T." She looked at me like I was crazy.
