Yes, Howard McNear did several voices on the Flintstones. In one episode his character was a doctor, and you could swear it was Floyd. Barney Rubble was invisible. The doctor was talking to Fred about a tv show he seen last night. Barney says "Hey what about me"! and then the doctor says "OH,OH,OH you still here" just like floyd would do on TAGS. Howard Morris who played Ernest T. Bass, and Hal Smith who played Otis on TAGS, also did many voices on the Flintstones. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Jun 2001 20:57:24 EDT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: the "original" Floyd? <<<I heard a 1949 episode of "The Great Gildersleeve" on Radio Spirits that prominently featured a barber named Floyd. No,he wasn't played by our incomparable Howard McNear, but I wondered if one of the creators or writers ofTAGS had perhaps been a Gildy fan and had chosen to repeat the name for Mayberry's own barber.>> Joe Kearns, Mr. Wilson from "Dennis the Menace" on TV, was a regular on "The Great Gildersleeve" radio show and I'm thinking he was the one who played Floyd the barber on that show. And I can't help but think there wasn't much of a coincidence, since "The Great Gildersleeve" did take place in a small town, where everyone knew each other; he was an official in the local township (water commissioner, not sheriff); and Gildy did live with his son and a housekeeper (though she was not related and a daughter also lived there). And "The Great Gildersleeve" was originally a character on "Fibber McGee and Molly," making it (some argue) the first spinoff in all of broadcasting history--just as TAGS is often mentioned as the first spinoff in TV history (from "Make Room for Daddy"). McBV - Mayberry Chapter - Knoxville, TN ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Jun 2001 21:38:50 EDT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: wbmutbb-digest V3 #172 As a teacher, I cannot help but think about the educational system of good old Mayberry. Do you realize that Opie had Miss Crump for a teach for all the years he went to school except for the first grade? Why would that be? Poor Helen had to do everything. None of the other teachers must have worked at all. She was the only teacher who had to work on that "blame grading manual", she had to direct the high school play, and she even went to PTA meetings on Friday night. Then I always wondered what the music teacher did. Never once did the high school band take part in a Mayberry parade. Now always teaching for the past 34 years in small towns, I know the High School band is always the main attraction at local parades and such events as Founders Day. Of course, the Mayberry Town Band was so goooooooooood, that perhaps the high school band was afraid they would not be as good. Then maybe they did not have a band. Maybe they were slow in getting state aid. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Jun 2001 22:03:46 EDT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Floyd' last episode > I was watching the episode where Goober has a prize giveaway at the fillin' > station and > Floyd wins $200 ( except there's no $200 prize). I was wondering if this > was one of the > last episodes that howard mcnear did. I don't claim to be an expert, so I consulted my copy of "The Andy Griffith Show Book". According to it, "Goober's Contest" was, in fact, Floyd's last show. " Marathon I was just checking the TV Land sight tonight & found that there will be a " Mayberry R.F.D. Fandemonium Marathon " the weekend of July 7&8. The beginning episode will be " Andy & Helen Get Married " & included in the schedule is " Andy & Helen's Baby " where the Taylors return for the christening of Andy Jr. Should be a great weekend, check it out! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Jun 2001 22:40:13 -0400 (EDT) From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: 6 degrees and other stuff In the last digest Hollie wrote: >Maybe we should start our own book "7 >degrees of Andy Griffith" instead of "7 degrees >of Kevin Bacon" "Done and Done!" as Charlene Darling would say! Well, sorta! I have been writing down 6 Degrees of Andy in a note book for about 2 years now. If Aunt Bee still worked at that print shop we could have made up some real nice copies in green ink! The correct term is Six Degrees; it comes from the concept of six degrees of separation...a theory that any 2 people are only 6 steps or less away from having a common connection. You can check out some of them on my Mayberry Homepage, Check it out at http://community-2.webtv.net/misspoovey/MisspooveysGroovy/page4.html And I would like to invite the new members to take a visit to my little front porch in cyber space..... www.misspoovey.com Now I would like to throw in my 2 cents about the potty situation at the jail house. We all know why we don't see any toilets in the jail... because toilets weren't generally showed on TV back then. Now forgetting that we are talking about a TV show, let's truly explore this like the true Mayberry fanatics we are! :-) Back in those days, they might have had "real commodes". That's right, chamber pots. A covered pot that was then concealed in a piece of furniture that looked like a nightstand. Misspoovey has been around long enough to remember these. They were handy for those night time nature calls in cold or bad weather. In WV, we did not have indoor plumbing until I was about 5. And as far as facilities for Ange and Barn, I would imagine they had a convenience room somewheres close by. Maybe they had to go out in the alley. A lot of public buildings had the bathrooms on the outside of the building. Not an outhouse mind you....just the door to the potty was on the outside of the building. You still see some bathrooms like this today. Our local Dairy Queen, for one. Anyway, that's my bucket thoughts on the toilet situation. Ever notice how Helen just kept teaching older and older children? What's up with that? Misspoovey is working summer extended day and is back to showing an episode of TAGS after lunch. The kids from last year are enjoying it and I'm making some new converts. I am also doing the reward system for a student for using an AGS quote in an appropriate way. The best I have had so far this summer was during a field trip to the zoo last week. We were in bleachers listening to a zoo worker talk about animal indigenous to Florida. A little girl climbed down two rows of seats to whisper in my ear "The dingo dog is indigenous to Australia!" I ask ya, how great is that?! So happy to see LLH (Lauralee Hobbs) posting in the last digest. We miss you LLH !!! Now you be sure to stay nice and cool this summer. Stay out of the mid day heat even if you see the neighbor's pool being stolen! LOL! Law today and saw the actor that played Howard in this show. He was a tobacco company executive. They were being sued for the medical condition of a life long smoker. I was also wondering what some comments are on my e-mail sent a week ago. It was on my favorite episode 'Citizens Arrest". Once again I think that this episode is deffinately a classic in the shows history. The banter between Barney and Otis in this and many other shows is some of the best scenes that is set up by the writers of the show and put into action by two of the shows actors that really feed off of each other in these situations that they are put in.Everyone remember "the Mayberry knottieing group meets here every Tuesday night". ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Jun 2001 22:22:58 -0500 From: "DEBORAH DUBOSE" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Know Who Said That? I have most of TAGS on video, but I'm missing perhaps ten episodes. Is there a place where one can order specific episodes (uncut, I hope). Channel 5 here in Phoenix is currently running TAGS every day from 4:00 to 5:00--two episodes--but they usually cut the tag and I think they've edited the actual shows internally, too. Just found out that TVLand's Fandemonium weekend July 7-8, 2001 will showcase Mayberry R.F.D.! All 78 episodes will be shown, some will be repeated to fill up the full 48 hours. I've just finished reading Dale Robinson and David Fernades' guide to Mayberry R.F.D., so I'z all keyed up to see several episodes that I've never seen (or at least not since 1968-71). R.F.D. is not TAGS, but I think of it as a third chapter in the saga of Mayberry (TAGS B&W is first chapter, TAGS Color is 2nd chapter). Check out TVLand's website, www.tvland.com for the schedule. Of course later on she was Thelma Lou Whitfield-Fife but I keep trying to think of one for the B&W episodes. I suppose if we can try to figure out what P. stood for in Barney's name we could try to figure out a last name for Thelma Lou. The best I've come up with so far would be if Thelma Lou was related to Abbott and Costello's first baseman, she would be Thelma Lou Who.
