The Tape-A-Thon Well it took nearly the whole 48 hours, 2 VCR's, and seven videotapes but I now have all the 'Mayberry R.F.D' episodes in beautiful color thanks to TV Land :-). (Now if only I could get all the Gomer Pyle episodes on tape ;-)). I wish TV Land would make Mayberry R.F.D a permanent series. After all now that they've gone to East & West feeds it seems to me they could eliminate the "double airings" of some shows and find a slot for it! Still Tired from Taping, Chad Palmer ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Jul 2001 02:31:42 EDT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Mayberry RFD Regarding this weekend's "Mayberry RFD" marathon on TV Land: Did anyone notice in the outdoor sets, the town of Mayberry seemed to change drastically during the last season or so, around 1970? I'm thinking they moved to new studios from Paramount to Warner Brothers (someone step in if I'm wrong), and the layout of the town is totally different. The indoor sets always remained the same (Emmett's Fix-It Shop, Howard's clerk office). But the grocery store is on the other side of the movie theater, which now sports a 1940s era marquee (the original had a 1920s deal). Goober's gas station now had a new location: it was closer to town, right across from an old church, and it now had a roof over the gas island. And most noticeably, there was a big park in the middle of the town square (a nice touch), with--was that the bandstand? Did they *finally* get that thing fixed? Someone must have *finally* got down there with them spiders! I am perhaps one of a minority who really loves the RFD episodes. I am a 100 % fan of the old black and white TAGS episodes, but for some reason, the Mayberry RFD episodes really hit me. I think it is because the characters and story lines are so much more realistic than many of the earlier TAGS episodes. While it is true they lack the antics of good old Barn, Gomer, Otis, and even then the very "ignorant" Goob, they bring back some very fond memories of growing up in a small town very similar to Mayberry and its citizens. We had one"spinster" in our town who was the spitting image of Clara Edwards. I know I will enjoy the many hours of future watching of Mayberry RFD now that I have them on tapes. One last comment, I have an uncle living in a small town in Michigan who is still hired today to find water using his willow branch. They recently had a large newspaper article about him stating his success rate. By the way, wouldn't old Barn be surprised to see old Wierd Willie back in Mayberry helping out Sam. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 09 Jul 2001 08:11:12 -0500 From: Paul Mulik <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: RFD Q&A >>> ... i didnot know until this am when i was watching mayberry rfd marathon on tvland that sam went to mayberry union high and played on the football team-i guess he had moved away from mayberry when grown, to return many years later.... >>>> We learn in the TAGS episode "Mayberry RFD" (which served as a quasi-pilot episode for the new series) that Sam had been in the army and stationed overseas. This explains his absence. >>>Can someone tell me if an explaination was ever given for the absence of Andy on RFD ? Also, where did Andy supposedly go, and who took over as Sheriff after Andy left ? In Mayberry RFD they don't tell who is Sheriff. >>> In the RFD episode "Andy's Baby" we're told that Andy has taken a job in Charlotte (Opie was absent at the christening because he stayed behind to study for exams). Later, in "Return to Mayberry" we're told that he had been working as a Postal Inspector in Cleveland. After Andy left Mayberry, they never had another sheriff. Goober continued his duties as deputy on an as-needed basis, such as the time he locked up Howard Sprague for robbing the bank. I wonder if Goober had to be periodically re-elected to his post, or if he had some sort of special permanent appointment? - --Paul ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Jul 2001 09:51:48 -1000 From: "Paul Gilkes" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Mayberry RFD Fandemonium I thoroughly enjoyed the Mayberry RFD Fandemonium Weekend on TVLand, then realized that over on Nickelodeon, that channel was running TAGS in succession. I was able to tape all 78 episodes of RFD, but had three of them I'll have to redo at a later date because of thunderstorms which swept through west central Ohio early and late Saturday evening, interrupting my satellite signal and once even knocking the electrical power out. It was especailly gratifying to see a number of folks on RFD who may have appeared once or more previously on TAGS, then went to establish themselves further in the entertainment industry -- Teri Garr; Jodie Foster (Mike Jones' younger sister)at least twice; Danny Bonaduce (before he became Danny Partridge); Dick Wilson (in the years before Mr. Whipple squeezing the Charmin'); Alice Ghostley (Sam's cousin Alice who was also Esmerelda on Bewitched); a young Farrah Fawcett (she sat on Sam's armchair at the cocktail party when Millie modeled in New York); Darlene Carr with the high school girls's crush on Howard Sprague (later Karl Malden's daughter on The Streets of San Francisco); and Sam Edwards who played the bailiff when Sam Jones got the traffic ticket. Sam Edwards played a number of parts on TAGS, most notably in the Christmas episode and Andy Forecloses. I was obliged to take the notepad, and write "Nip it!", and of course, this started a whole moulage. Just as the minister had expounded on temptation, one daughter wrote back, "that's one subject you can't preach too much about ... sin." Then the other got in the swing, about time for the invitation hymn, writing "we will not sing, we will not sing." I guess giggling in church is only slightly less distracting than someone dropping of to sleep or catching a fly, but not much. Of course, as I bolted from my seat to head to Sunday school, daughter number 1 said "WHAT'S your hurry?" I thought for years that I was hearing things. I taped the show and I also bought a video with "RAFE HOLLISTER SINGS", this is episode 83. The bad word is said when Andy is trying to remember who was caught moonshining the year before. Rafe is the culprit of saying the bad word, not our dear Andy. This has been a subject that comes up from time to time. I have listened to the word you are refering to. I admit it "sounds like" the bad word,.. However,.. I think that's all it is... a "sounds like" situation. I don't believe that the bad word would have made it on the air. Especially not in the early 60s,.. and especially not on TAGS. I think he is actually saying "well." Rafe stammers and slurs his speech a little. (probably all that shine) I could be wrong,.... I was once. In a previous digest, someone asked when did goober`s service station move to town-i, too, noticed it being across the street from the church, and what i think happened is, in later years, Goober rebuilt in town, because if you will notice, this filling station is an entirely different one than the one in the country-is much bigger with more services offered-so i think this was a sign of progress, rather than just the set being moved around. Also, did anyone see an episode where it explained what happened to Warren? I never did know where he went to, or whether they ever even said. In closing, in the episode where Andy and Helen bring Andy, jr. back to be christened, i wander why Opie was not named Andy,jr?-it would have made a much more sensible name than Opie-just a thought.
