Now correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't it mentioned In "Return to
Mayberry" that Barney was the acting sheriff since the death of Sheriff
Patterson? Ya gotta figure that some body besides Goober had to be
around to rattle the door knobs on Main St, check the summer cabins up
around the lake, receive gold trucks, arresting clanking little old
ladies, drive fun girls outta town, smash up stills, judge beauty
contests, umpire ballgames, send medicine men a-packing, convince
moonshiners to take their shots, tell bedtime stories to drunks and date
all the pretty county nurses! A moving and shaking metropolis like
Mayberry would be in dire straits without a high sheriff. Who would be
around to keep the peace at that swinging singles apartment complex
Howard moved into? :-)

As a teacher, I really think the episode about Goober teaching Drivers Ed is
a real
HOOT. Can you imagine a school district actually being able to hire someone
without a high school diploma to be a teacher? Of course, the standards here
in Wisconsin are very high. Actually, several years ago our local citizens
elected one our "high school drop outs" to our school district school board.
That sure was an experience - he only lasted about a year, and then resigned.
He couldn't understand all the reading that was required.

My son is a trucker and usually takes some of my TAGS tapes to watch in his
truck while in truck stop parking lots. He recently took his 7 year old
daughter with him and she has also become a TAGS fan. She told me, "Nanny,
I like that Opie. He's a good boy." What a great example Opie is for our
younger generation.

I taped the first two hours of the RFD marathon Sat. morning so I could get
Andy and Helen's wedding
I also watched a few episodes spuratically Sat and Sun. and wish now I had
taped the whole thing.
I too didn't think I cared for the show, but after watching, did enjoy them
a lot.
I saw the episode "Andy's baby" and caught them saying Andy lived in
Charlotte and worked for the SBI (State Bureau of Investigations).
I guess sometime later he became a postal inspector.

by the way I made the show in Pigeon Forge, they needed a squad car to park
out front,
so my 63 was on duty and had a ball, Don Knotts and Howard Morris were
gracious enough to autograph the dash for me. The three stars Don, Howard
and Betty Lynn, were so kind and gracious to the adoring fans
Don had to leave right after the show (he had a book signing the next day)
but Howard and Betty stayed on
and signed autographs for nearly 3 hours non stop after the show. That
folks, takes a lot out of you
especially when you are mid 70's to early 80's as these are.
It was indeed a thrill to meet Mr Knotts And Mr Howard and again see Ms
Lynn. I only wish I could have made it to Nashville. But I have to save
something for another time.

>>>Hi! I'm new to the list and was wondering if someone could fill me in on
Mayberry R.F.D. I watched one show on TV Land this weekend and was
completly lost.
>>>

After 8 seasons of The Andy Griffith Show, Andy Griffith figured he'd done
about all he could do (don't worry, he didn't fall dead), but he did decide
not to play the character of Andy Taylor anymore. However, The Show was
number 1 in the ratings, and the producers were reluctant to just let it
drop altogether.

So, they re-worked the show a little bit and changed the name to Mayberry
RFD (after all, they couldn't very well call it The Andy Griffith Show
without Andy Griffith). Most of the major cast members continued their
established roles on the new series: Aunt Bee, Goober, Howard, Emmett,
Clara, Reverend Tucker, and a few others. Mayberry RFD lasted for three
seasons, at which point some genius at CBS decided their network wasn't
sophisticated enough. With one stroke, every show with a rural connection
was abruptly cancelled (this was 1971). Mayberry RFD, Hee Haw, The Beverly
Hillbilles, Green Acres -- all gone, just like that.

Hi to all the tags fans. I'm new to all of this but I'm enjoying all the
great e-mails that I have been reading. It's wonderful to see so many people
enjoy the shows after all these years.

I thought Sheriff Taylor's name was Andrew Jackson Taylor,
but on the RFD episode where Andy & Helen return for Andy
Jr.'s christening, Andy Jr. is referred to as Andrew Samuel
Taylor. Did I just imagine that Andy's middle name was
Jackson?

Also, I'd like to make a citizen's arrest of Steve Mitchell
for violating Rule #2. Nothing is ever going to live up to
Andy Griffith and Don Knotts, so it isn't fair to use them
as the basis for comparison to anything else. However, I
for one thoroughly enjoyed the weekend of the less-familiar
Mayberry stories of RFD.

Does anyone know if Paul Hartman
'Emmett, the fix-it guy'
(who usually fixes things with a hammer
or a good swift kick!) is any relation at all
to dearly-departed great actor, Phil Hartman?
Just wondering.

I was just wondering about something I heard on the RFD episodes....when Andy
came back and made Sam and the gang godfathers....I didn't realize that
Goober hooked Andy and Helen up...I thought they met because she was mad at
Andy about the History class when she first came to town and why they made
some of the TAGS episodes "colored" when they were black and white
also.....off to work and thanks, Hollie

Subject: something they put in the water?

I too watched a fair chunk of the TVLand "Mayberry R.F.D." marathon, but
was disturbed by the change that had come over several of the AGS
characters. I noticed that Goober and Howard were rather mean-spirited
sometimes, shouting at one another and telling each other to "shut up"
(although I can recall Andy telling Gomer to "shut up" when he kept
interrupting Barney's recitation of how things had gone at the Miracle
Salve office; and of course "Oh shut up, Bernie!" when he was really fed
up with the Fun Girls). Also, Clara Edwards seemed pretty nasty in the
episode of RFD where Alice is wanting to fit in with the ladies of
Mayberry. Had Otis spiked the town's water tower with something? Also,
too many of the situations on RFD episodes seemed so improbable: Howard
digging up a dinosaur underneath Goober's filling station -- things like
that, which somehow seemed so less likely than a "loaded" goat on the
loose ;-) ...

I noticed that many scenes in RFD were composed in blue: did Sam own
any other shirt than that bright blue one? Maybe this has been kicked
around before, but why all the green in the color episodes of TAGS?
Everything is green: the courthouse, Andy's house, most of the clothes.
And a lot of greens that clash: bright green with avocado, for
instance! There's a lot of green in RFD, too, but more blue, it seems.
Does anybody know the reason for this? I'm guessing it was considered a
pleasing, restful color -- or maybe they just got a great deal on green
paint!

Hey folks,

I have to admit, my disliking for color episodes
and Mayberry RFD is more than just the
"lack of Barney". There just seems to be TOO much
green in the episodes. Every wall and door seems to be
green. Also, there's just something about
Emmet's Fix-it shop I just don't like.

Susan, you mentioned the singles only apartment that Howard moved into. I was
struck how far we have come, when Sam and Howard wanted to take a camping
vacation, Millie didn't want to go. She suggested that Howard, Sam and
Barbara go without her. Howard pipes up with how absolutely inappropriate
that would be. Millie does go on the camping trip. Barbara and Millie share a
tent while Howard and Sam share another, Barb

Hi Friends, I would like to share this story with my fellow TAGS fans. My
16 year old son considers himself to be "WAY COOL" he is 6'5 with blond hair
and bright blue eyes, he is extremely athletic and very popular at school.
The nice thing is that he's been a TAGS fan since he was just a little guy,
being brought up by me he was very exposed to our beloved show. However, his
Dad and sisters do not share our enthusiasm or as we say "they just don't get
it." Anyway, today at football practice in 95* heat the kids were begging
the coach to give them the day off. The coach joking around said "OK, if
someone can answer a trivia question you can go home." The kids were yelling
with excitement and then the coach said "What was the name of Barney's
landlady on the Andy Griffith show?" Well, you can imagine what these kids
had to say. My son said they were really ticked (not his exact word).
Everyone was moaning and swearing when suddenly my son yelled out "Mrs.
Mendlebright." He said the coach looked at him totally shocked and then
burst into laughter. He couldn't believe this kid knew the answer. Well,
needless to say my son is the hero of the day, and you know what. I'm pretty
proud of that boy!

Now let's all sing! A cap pel la, (snap snap), A cap pel la

I enjoyed watching and taping most of the RFD-thon. We were without cable
and/or power for several hours, so I missed from 6a.m. to 2:30p.m. on
Sunday (episodes 44-58). Hoping to be able to add these if TVLand plays them
again. Wish they'd put RFD on a regularly scheduled basis. Oh,
well, many people in our area of south-central WV were hit hard by flooding and
some lost everything they had, so I am counting my blessings that
we just had power outages and a little water in the basement. (Like I know
Mayberry folks would, people in our town and the surrounding towns are
pulling together to feed people and to help out the ones who need clothes,
food, furniture, housing, etc.)

only contain a few episodes. Thank you for your help.
