There was Claude Sr., Claude Jr., plain Claude, and Claudette. They called him plain Claude because he wasn't a senior or a junior, not because he was homely. However, he did have the Beemon overbite. She was sweet lookin', and would have been my vote for Andy to hook up with. She died several years ago, and is the mother of Tatum O'Neal (John McEnroe's ex) and ex wife of Ryan O'Neal. Anyone know why the producers didn't want her to be Andy's love interest? The episodes I remember her in were 1962, and Tatum was born in '63, so maybe she wanted to raise her yung-'un at home. One of them beinbg when Opie gets very jealous of Miss Peggy. Late in the show Andy sits Opie down on the front porch and has a great father & son talk. He tells Opie that he's his youngun and is very important to him. He also tells opie that he LOVES HIM MORE THAN ANYBODY OR ANYTHING. I have seen alot of episodes and this has to be the very sincerest way that anyone expresses LOVE for anyone on the show. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Jul 2001 13:57:47 EDT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: thank you Jst wanted to say "much obliged to ya" to all the good people from mayberry who wrote back with the answer to my question about barney`s mom-i`ll admit, i just didnt have my thinking bucket on for this one-i am always so impressed with the number of people who can tell you not only the name of the episode in question, but the exact number of it as well-long live mayberry! I have a question for all you die hard TAGS fans who know the finest points of TAGS. Around a year ago I was watching TAGS and the opening credits said the name of the show was "Andy of Mayberry". Unfortunately, I cannot remember which episode included this title, but it really threw me. Can anyone tell me the history of Andy of Mayberry? "You mean you want her to make another batch of those kerosene cucumbers?" I loved the relationship she had with Andy & Opie, and the episode where she cooked dinner and set the lovely table. When Andy answered Opie's question of why did things become different when Peg showed up, "there's a woman in the house", I thought it absolutely the best thing he could have said. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Jul 2001 14:12:09 -0500 From: Paul Mulik <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Jr, Sr, etc. >>>I believe that both people have to have the same first and middle names to be either a "Jr." or "II." You want it straight, don't you? Okay, here goes: There are no rules for pas and sons. It's up to each mother or father, as the case may be, to name his son the way that he thinks is best. Joe John Smith could name his son Joe John Smith, but that doesn't automatically make the son a Junior, or II, or anything else. It's just a personal preference; some parents choose to add the suffix while others choose not to. The reason some folks use "II" (pronounced "the second") or "III," "IV," etc., is that the child may be named after a grandparent or some other relative, and not necessarily named after the child's father. In other words, if Bill Johnson's father or grandfather was named Hank Johnson, Bill might choose to name his own son Hank Johnson II. The II does not imply that Hank Johnson II is the son of Hank Johnson, only that he is the second person in the family to bear that name. Of course, there may be all sorts of regional variations on these practices, but I hope this clears it up at least a little bit. Remember Mayberry's Beaman family? Aunt Bee identifies the four generations as Claude Senior, Plain Claude, Claude Junior, and Claudette. If it was "mandatory" that a father and son with the same name were junior and senior, then Plain Claude would have to be both a junior AND a senior, which doesn't make any sense. - --Paul ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Jul 2001 15:56:52 EDT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: wbmutbb-digest V3 #199 I am sitting here in Western Wisconsin with the temperature at 95 and I can't understand how all those Mayberry folks could walk around in long sleeves and suitcoats and then talk about how hot it was. Maybe there was a city ordinance about men showing their bare arms in public or something. "Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it." You know who said that? I had assumed the episodes with the announcer were correct, but now I'm left to wonder. >>> I wasn't yet born when TAGS first aired, but I'm fairly certain the original version of the opening credits had the announcer's voiceover. (For them that don't know, the announcer is Colin Male, who later would play the game warden who arrests Andy in "Andy and Helen Have Their Day.") For most episodes, the announcement goes like this: "The Andy Griffith Show, starring Andy Griffith with Ronny Howard; also starring Don Knotts*. Brought to you by..." and then they went into a commercial for Post Cereal, Jell-O, Sanka, or some other General Foods product. When the show went to syndication, they chopped off the "Brought to you by" part (which corresponded to a shot showing Opie's rock splashing into the lake) because once it entered syndication, The Show no longer had a sole sponsor. Anybody remember this jingle, sung by Andy and Ronny? "You know a cereal will please you most, when it comes to you in a package from Post, 'cause all Post cereals happen to be, just a little better, a little bit better, a little bit better than any other cereal happens to be." This was accompanied by a shot of Andy and Ronny pulling their boat up on shore. Anyway, when The Show went to color, they removed Don Knotts' name from the opening credits and included Frances Bavier's (the theme song was also lowered from the key of G to Eb -- if you don't know what a key is, don't worry, just jump in where ya can and hang on). I don't recall ever seeing a copy of a color episode that included the announcer's voiceover, but maybe they did use it originally and I just haven't seen any of those prints. - --Paul *In some first season episodes, it was "...also starring Elinor Donahue and Don Knotts." ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Jul 2001 14:21:52 -0700 (PDT) From: Megan Greenway <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Opie's Mom I was wondering what happened to Opie's mom. Today I was writing a note to Larry in Estes Park and realized how negative I sounded. As soon as I wrote this next paragraph I went back and deleted all the other things I had written: Have you noticed how grumpy some people in the digest have been lately? I don't know if it's the summertime blues or what but alot of people seem 'snappish' lately and maybe I'm getting a little snappish myself. I mention some of the goings on in the digest to my wife sometimes and she usually just smiles and reminds me that this is a group of people sitting around watching 40 year old reruns and some people are actually arguing over which episodes are better than others! I know we're all passionate about this group - that's why we joined but when it comes right down to it, what difference does it make which episodes are better? And like Alan says, if you wouldn't say something to someone's face don't say it to them in the digest. - -Charlie _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Jul 2001 18:48:39 -0500 From: "ralph smole" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: wbmutbb-digest V3 #199 I would like to take this moment to apologize to anyone whom I might have offended with my diatribe concerning the "ad" for a tv talk-show and news. Stadiums no longer have an identity, race-cars are plastered with logos, even athletes are walking billboards. I guess I saw just ONE too many ads. Please forgive me!!
