I had the same problem with my I Love Lucy collection. I came back after I had been out for a while. When they sent me the first video that I already had I simply sent it back with a note stating with what video I wanted to start at and they did it. My next video was the one that I needed. The consensus seems to be "I don't like them" or "never cared for them." Of course, some have reevaluated their position since TV Land began showing the color episodes. The color episodes are some of the best examples of well written, well acted, well crafted 60's television. Remember, TAGS achieved it's highest ratings during the color years, and I believe all of Don Knotts' Emmys came from guest appearances on color episodes. We have a unique vantage point of being able to view the TAGS "product" as a whole. Inconsistencies and perceived differences will stand out more to us who can view episodes from many different stages of the show's evolution. We shouldn't lose sight of the fact that the viewers of the show at the time, and those who awarded industry recognition, believed it to be high quality television. My personal feeling is that the first four or five years of the show reflected the values and lifestyle of the 40's and 50's. The later shows had more of a 60's vibe. This shift was a little jarring, and yes it was different from what we enjoyed in those early years. It was still hands down better than anything else going on in television in it's time. Dang! I went and used my whole two cents worth... Paul Hartman (a.k.a. Emmett Clark) can > really cut a rug! Was he a professional dancer? Yes. He and wife Grace were a professional dance team. They became vaudeville headliners and eventually starred on Broadway... I forget the name of musical, but each won the Tony the same year (1948 I think) for Best Performer in a Musical, male and female awards respectively. They didn't do many films, but they did costar as a butler and maid in "Higher and Higher" (1944) with Frank Sinatra. Grace died in 1955, and Paul reinvented himself as a character actor on television in the early 60s... he was a regular on "Petticoat Junction" in its first season. And the year before he joined the "TAGS" cast, he appeared in Don Knotts' feature "The Reluctant Astronaut." I went thru the very same thing with them. It was so rediculous that I had to laugh while on the phone with them. Just like Don, I too would like to know how I can get tapes 11-20 without getting 1-10 again. Thanks. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Jul 2001 16:21:46 EDT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: wbmutbb-digest V3 #216 Dear TAGS friends: I am probably the olast one in fan club to notice the Taylors living room is the same one that Ricky and Lucy Ricardo lived in. I knew it was filmed at Desilu, but didnt notice the set was the same until seeing the fireplace the other night and that side door that the Mertzes used to come through. Why they're skipping 1&2, I don't know. (6-7PM CST) I'll do my chores with the tv off, during the first episode, then relax, and again become one with the world.....and my television set, to truly "Return to Mayberry"......ahhhhhhhhhhh, contentment. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Jul 2001 19:43:35 -0500 From: "Cynthia Mahoney" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Color episodes I now have the TV Land version of all 249 episodes on tape and for the first time, I can say that I have watched every TAGS episode at least once! After having watched them all I must admit that I misjudged the color episodes. I guess I either didn't watch enough of them to get used to them and like them or else I was prejudiced against them from hearing other people say they did not like them. Whatever the reason, I now think they are OK. Some of them are really funny although they are definitely different from the black and white episodes. The contrast is never clearer than when TV Land comes to the end of the color episodes and starts showing the black and whites again. However, I do not think the change happened suddenly between episode 159 and 160 or between any other 2 episodes, for that matter. It was gradual, although Barney leaving the show was definitely a turning point. The series just seems to have evolved. Once I accepted that the later shows are different from the earlier ones, it is easier to enjoy every one on its own individual merits. I certainly understand why some people do not like the color episodes. My preference is still the black and whites and the earlier, the better, but I think the color episodes have developed a bad reputation that they do not deserve. I guess that is enough rambling about the merits of the color episodes. It sure is nice to have a place to share these type of thoughts with people who share the same interest. The black & whites have always been my favorites. Our local station does run the color episodes every now and then. I enjoy them but not nearly as much as the b&w episodes...However, I prefer watching TAGS over any current running comedies. IT is just truly THE BEST. ------------------------------ End of wbmutbb-digest V3 #217 ***************************** ************************************************** ~ Visit our sponsor ~ Weaver's Department Store ~ http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/weavers/ ************************************************** You must send your comments to the Digest from the address you used to join WBMUTBB or your message will not be posted.
