I must say that I think Aunt Bee is the star of the color episodes! I just
love how she kind of "breaks out" in these....learing to drive, flying a plane,
wearing a wig, going to Mexico. These are some of my favorite episodes,
although overall I prefer the b&w.

Subject: Making a Spectacle

Well, I made a spectacle of myself last weekend, all because of TAGS. I was at
a folk festival in Denver, waiting for my man, Ellis Paul, to come on. There
was some group playing, and they said they were going to play a song from TAGS.
Then they started talking about the Darlings and trying to remember the name
of the daughter. I cupped my mouth and shouted "CHARLENE!!" at the top of my
lungs, much to my own surprise, as I never like to draw attention to myself.
Well, the group much appreciated it, although they remarked that it was "scary"
that I knew that. :-) They then went on to play "Dooley", and I hid under my
blanket for a while. :-)

Subject: Butter and egg man sighting

With all the talk about TV land I called my cable operator
to find out if we were going to get it - it was promised
along with many others several months back - lo and behold
the lady said, "Reprogram your TV and it'll pick up the new
channels". After figuring out HOW to do that there was TV
Land! So now I can get in on all those marathons you folks
have been talking about! I better buy some more blank
tapes huh?

On the butter and egg man sighting - I was eating lunch
yesterday and turned on the tube to see what was playing on
TV land and is was Gunsmoke. They had a trial and one of
the jurers, easily upset type, was Aunt Bee's Butter and
Egg man with a beard!! (probably trying to hide from
jealous husbands?) I did not watch the credits so I can't
tell you the gents name but he played a fine upset juror!

peace,

Rev. Joe

Subject: B&W vs. Color

I'll jump in on the B&W v. Color debate...seems like it always pops up when
TVLand is running the color episodes. There have been a few comments that I
whole heartedly agree with...namely that even if you don't like the color
episodes as well as the B&Ws, they're still better than 99.44% of the other
options on TV these days (that percentage goes down a little in the fall
when Nebraska football games are on!).

I have really enjoyed the development of some of the characters in the color
episodes such as Goober and Howard. I love Don Knotts and wish he would
have stayed for the whole run, but if he hadn't have left, the depth of
these other characters might have never been achieved. I also enjoy their
continued development on Mayberry R.F.D., although I must say I never quite
adjusted to Ken Berry taking over Andy's role as the town voice of
reason/straight man.

Floyd is another one who turned in some brilliant performances during the
color seasons...in fact, I think of Floyd's two distinct runs in TAGS
(pre-stroke and post-stroke), I enjoy his later performances the
best...voice inflections and facial expressions are priceless.

For those of you that enjoy the color episodes, what are your ONE, TWO or
THREE favorites, (excluding appearances by Don Knotts)?

Mine would be:

1. Dinner at Eight ("I'm goin' over to Helen's and eat my third supper and
then I'm comin back here and I'm gonna kill you.")
2. Howard's Bachelor Pad ("Go man go!")
3. Floyd's Barbershop ("I'll come down $7.50 if you'll go up $7.50")

Keith in Nebraska

Goober: Ope, tell 'em why we're gonna use the declining balance accounting
system.
Opie: We like the sound of it!

Subject: Columbia House Tapes 11-20

There is a way you should be able to easily get the correct set of
tapes. Do what the person on the phone said- E-Mail Customer
Service! They're much more competent than most of the Columbia House Phone
Support Personnel, and know how things really work. Really there are
different ways of going about it.

I bought a set of Columbia House Videos off eBay that was missing a few
Volumes, so I e-mailed them to find out how to get the missing ones. They
replied that you just had to e-mail them a list of the ones that you DIDN'T
want, and they would note in their computer system to withhold shipment of
those volumes. So in this case you'd start a new subscription for "The
Andy Griffith Show" series, and ask that they not ship Volumes 1-10.

Or if you like, you could order Volumes 11-20 or 11- however many they've
got done so far all at once. If you ask, they'll tell you how to do
this. If I remember correctly, you pay like $19.99 per tape, but they
reduce the shipping to a flat rate of $15.00 when you order a whole set
like that.

Good Luck!

Earlier this week, I saw the episode where Sam ran against Emmett for Town
Council. What I don't understand is what Howard was doing at the party
waiting for the results: Where I come from, the County Clerk is in charge
of counting the votes. Maybe he felt he should excuse himself since he had
taken sides in the election. Any speculation as to who did the counting?

Subject: Framed Poster on Wall at Courthouse

In the earlier episodes of TAGS, there is a framed poster on the wall of
the courthouse above the bookshelf near the bulletin board. It looks like
it has some portraits around the boarder and some type of a line graph in
the center. Does anyone know what this poster is? It shows up in many of
the episodes, but I think the best picture of it is in the episode
entitled "Lawman Barney" (sorry, but I'm not sure of the episode number).
If anyone has any info on this poster, i.e. what it is or if there is a
reproduction of it anywhere, I'd love to know. Thanks!

Subject: Re: Mystery Lady Solved?

My computer has been down for many weeks; it is more trouble trying
to get on this thing than it is worth, so I am way behind in my Digest
reading. But I did read an article where a beautiful member (sorry,
but the time lapse between reading the post and writing this has caused
me to forget the writer's name--please remind me) wrote that he/she
wondered if my Mystery Lady (aka "Nice Dress Nellie") could be
married to our own Tom Jacobs aka Johnny Coons.

What a wonderful observation! I used to wonder if perhaps "Nice
Dress Nellie" wasn't Mrs. Jean Howard, until I saw Mrs. Howard on A&E when
Ron was being featured. I have always entertained the notion that this
attractive lady was married to someone connected to the show. When I
was young, I used to note her appearances and see if they correlated
with any particular director or writer (even Howard Morris), but I could
never come up with anything. But the Tom Jacobs connection is a
very interesting one indeed. And I never thought of it.

Meantime, I still have a nearly impossible computer to deal with;
and, yes, we have called The Man. Trouble is his price caused me to have
a sinking spell not even several Mr. Cooky Bars could lift me out of,
so what's a girl to do? Think of a favorite quote and grin and bear
it.

Here's mine: Ernest T. talking about his former love Hogget (it's a
French name, you know): "She went and married the taxidermist what sewed up
her head." (Of course, this was after Ernest T. hit Hogget with a rock, so
it was his own fault!)

Subject: Back from the country

Friends,
Our long-anticipated journey to "Mayberry Country" is over, and I'd like to
share some thoughts with you. We didn't go to Mt. Airy this trip, but we did
spend time with relatives in Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge/Sevierville/Pittman
Center,
TN, and my daughters went to Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC for a
week of vocal camp. My girls got to: see the river where their Grandpa was
baptized, meet most of the living Tennessee cousins, and see the graves of
some ancestors.

I have long held the opinion that Mayberry is an attitude and a set a values.

These can be found wherever Mayberrians happen to reside: whether it be
Mt. Airy, NC or Modesto, CA. But I have to say folks, there's a whole lot
more of it in the Smoky Mountains than in the Golden State of California!
This fast pace of life, and the anonymity of having such great numbers of
people living so close together, cause people to feel free to behave in ways
that people in smaller towns would rarely do. And, the common morality of
living in places where Biblical values are taught and mutually encouraged has
it's effect, too. We noticed that people take time to extend the common
courtesies which we see on TAGS. A gentleman nodded and tipped his hat
to me, and I had to do a double-take. Sad, but I'm not used to that. My
daughters' two greatest impressions were: "It's so green here!" And,
"People wave to us, and they don't even know us".

My children and I went to buy peaches at a local ranch this morning. On
our way out, as I paused to speak briefly to an old friend, a woman came up
behind me and blared her horn at me (although she had room to pass) simply
because I didn't move fast enough for her. I commented to my children that,
if a city woman is going to come out to the country, she would do well to at
least try to act like country with civil country manners! Well, wouldn't you
know, as we pulled into the next produce stand, there she was, picking out
cukes and tomatoes. All that rudeness and fuss to get to a fruit stand just
a
little faster!

"LORD God, may I not forget, in my rush to get away from the people who
are rushing about, to be kind and gracious to those who are not kind and
gracious to me."

"WHAT'S your hurry?"

Sorry, I did go on too long, but where else will people understand what I'm
talking about? I appreciate this forum and you all.

A slightly depressed and longing for the country
Aunt Bee from Modesto, CA
