Leonard Blush, Leonard Blush!, Is that all you ever think
about? LEONARD BLUSH?

Actually that's a good choice. I, myself, would like to see
(and hear Barney's story finally) Myra Koontz from the
"lann-jerr-ee" shop and also that fine fellow graduate of
Ange and Barn - Miss Pearlie Mae Dubois.

I've got a pretty good idea of what Sarah and Juanita look
like - wouldn't want a bonus episode to show them and spoil
all of that work I've done constructing them out of thin
air.

Thanks to everyone who has shown some interest in my pet project I'm trying
to launch. If anyone out there wants to be on my update list, just send me
an e-mail at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and your name will be added to the
list. I will keep everyone informed of the status of the project. We've
got some great ideas like a Barney "We Defy the Mafia" cover issue, Ernest
T. specials, the Darlins in Mayberry and on and on. Each issue will have
the essence of that particular episode, as we will stay honest to ol' Ange
and Barn. Looking forward to hearing from everyone. And let me know which
you prefer - black and white episodes, color episodes, or a large or small
mixture.

I don't know if I am the only one who has noticed this, but quite a few of our
Mayberry actors have lent their voices to cartoons. Hal Smith (Otis) was in
several episodes of the Flintstones, as was Ernest T, and our own lovable
Floyd. Just the other night there was an episode on where Barney decides to
find Andy a girl and he tells all of these women Thelma Lou invited them to
Andy's. I can't for the life of me remember the name of the episode, but when
I heard the first girl named Amanda come in I knew I had heard that voice
before....That's when it hit me!! She's the voice of Judy Jetson! Amazing
where those Mayberry folk show up!!

Otis' worksites. Fun Girl "Aren't you gonna arrest us?"

Ain't it cool? My sweet Gomer finally getting promoted! I am so proud,
proud, proud!!! Do you suppose he went out and bought a new tie with
acorns on it for the ceremony? It would be just like Gomer to show up at
his ceremony out of uniform...bless his heart! Now about that quote
from the Marine Corps...

>"even though Gomer wasn't the sharpest knife
>in the drawer, he maintained all the attributes
>that a Marine is supposed to have. He was
>honest, trustworthy and always gave 100
>percent."

Okay, let's look at this...yes, no one could be more honest than Gomer.
And trustworthy? Yes, lawdy! Wally was all the time leaving Gomer alone
at the filling station. And ofcourse he always gave 100% ...look at the
way he went all out for his date with Mary Grace; he even went to a few
differrent stores to find a corsage that matched her dress and eyes.
Now, I kinda riled a bit at at the comment that Gomer wasn't the
sharpest knife in the drawer. Then I thought about it from a chef's
point of view. My favorite knife in my drawer isn't the sharpest. It's
the one I think as my favorite. It's the first one I reach for, the old
reliable. There may be some sharper but I feel comfortable with this
one. And that sort of sums up Gomer, now don't it?

I think it's interesting that so many people want to finally meet Sarah the
telephone operator (regarding tha question about that fantasry "lost" episode
we wish had been made). The phone operator on "Petticoat Junction" and "Green
Acres" was also named Sarah, and we *did* see *her* on a couple of rare
occasions. I forget the actress' name but she was an older lady and she did
appear on TAGS at least once in another role...

Subject: Theme whistling

Hi,
I have a question that I've never seen before but has me puzzled. Who
did the whistling for the beginning and ending of the shows ? Would like
to know some background on whoever it was and what ever happened to
them. Boy, talk about being forgotten in life and not getting
recognition, I feel sorry for them. Thanks for any help.
Frank C. Fendt

Chameleon and a Clown Magically yours.

(***NOTE FROM ALLAN: The following information is in the "Mayberry FAQ"
found on the TAGSRWC web site.)

Q. I heard that Fred Lowery whistled the theme to TAGS. Is that true.

A. From TAGSRWC founder, Jim Clark: You can nip this rumor in the bud! Fred
Lowery was a renowned whistler (perhaps the finest ever), but he may have
stretched the truth a little for the sake of a good story. He often whistled
the TAGS theme when he performed, but he did not whistle the version that we
hear on TAGS itself. That was indeed Earle Hagen. (I asked Earle about the
Fred Lowery rumors myself a few year's back, and he set the record straight.)
By the way, Fred Lowery wrote a very interesting autobiography called
"Whistling in the Dark" (so named because he was blind). --JC

>From Paul Mulik: No, composer Earle Hagen whistled it. It was the only thing
he ever whistled professionally, except for "Return to Mayberry," when he
reprised his earlier performance. People are always telling me that that they
remember when "the guy who whistled the Andy Griffith theme song" came and
performed at their school in the early 1970s. Whoever those folks saw, I
doubt if it was Earle Hagen --probably just some whistler who included the
TAGS theme in his own repertoire

In the movie "Return to Mayberry", Goober and Gomer owned the G & G Garage.
The movie was made around 1986. I don't know how long a person has to be
in
the Marine Reserves, after they leave the Marines. We need to find a
former
Marine an ask them that question.
How long was "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C" on T.V.? My favorite character on that
was
Sgt. Vince Carter played by Frank Sutton.

While watching TAGS last night I noticed something that didn't make much
sense to me. Of course, the show was great anyhow. Opie is being bullied on
the way to school and is getting extra nickels to "pay the bully off". When
Aunt Bee is making Opie's lunch and going on and on about apple pie, she
tells Opie to be sure and use the nickle for milk and not another piece of
apple pie. Does that mean the lunch room sold slices of apple pie on a daily
basis or maybe he was gonna buy some from a friend who brought apple pie
also? This is one of those trival trivialites but just thought I would run
it by you.

Subject: Mayberry Days Update

Big news from Surry Arts Council! The following new guests have been
confirmed for Mayberry Days, September 27-29:

Betty Lynn - Thelma Lou
Howard Morris - Ernest T. Bass
Leroy Mack McNees - The Country Boys

Our old friends Maggie Peterson-Mancuso, Doug Dillard, and George Spence
(Frank, "Cousin" Gloria's fiance) will also be back. Other guest stars may
be able to attend as well, so stay tuned!

The TAGS stars will be at many different events throughout the weekend and
all of them will be at the autograph session at the Andy Griffith Playhouse
right after the parade on Saturday. Howard Morris will be charging a
nominal fee for his signature, but historically, no one else does.

I will be updating the SAC website tonight, but I wanted to let WBMUTBB know
the big news. You can get more details about Mayberry Days online at
www.surryarts.org. The Doug Dillard 7pm concert and Colonel Tim's Talent
Time are both sold out, but there are other good events going on at those
same times in the Downtown Cinema Theatre and tickets are still available.

The annual WBMUTBB service project - Mayberry Days Silent Auction - is
Saturday morning. Some outstanding Mayberry items are starting to roll in
and I'll have an update in a few weeks. Thank you to everyone who has
contributed so far. Anyone else who is interested in helping out is welcome
to join in the fun! It's BIG!

Hey folks,

I got this from ouf "man on the scene." You'll want to check out the URL
that he provided for some great photos of Jim Nabors getting his promotion.

Subj: MORE ON LANCE CORPORAL PYLE
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Pinder LtCol Robert E)

Friday night, I saw Jim Nabors again, this time at the change of command
ceremony (we had a new lieutenant general assuming command). Mr. Nabors
again graciously posed with Marines and family and signed autographs (I got
him to sign again for me; he wrote GOLLEEE!!!). I told him I was a lawyer
and he should sue for back pay. He drove away in a SUV with license "JN1."
What a gentleman.

Anyway, see http://www.mfp.usmc.mil/gomer/gomerphotos.html
