At the end, a couple comes through and Andy asks them if the "showplace" made them stop in Mayberry and the man replies, "I thought this was Elm City." Good for a laugh, but in reality, Elm City is located about 20 miles south of Rocky Mount, NC, which is about 200 miles from "Mayberry." Talk about some bad directions!! Sure could have used a brine tester last night, as I canned 12 quarts of what I hope won't be kerosene cucumbers! That episode just kept a-runnin' through my brain the whole time I was canning. If you haven't seen it, it's a classic, too, especially the bit with Barney as best man... It is the first episode of Mayberry RFD. On the same subject, I find it interesting that Helen all of a sudden went from being Andy's girlfriend to being his fiancee. As far as I can tell, the first reference to Helen as Andy's fiancee occurs in the episode "Helen, the Authoress". I wonder why the writers did not make an episode out of the proposal. It certainly would have been a good subject to center an episode around. I'm around Opie's age, so I'm guessing here, but in our lunch room, in those days, we were not allowed to buy extras. You paid for you meal, the ladies put the food on your tray, and that was the end of it. We didn't have much of a choice in the matter the way children do today. So, I figured Aunt Bee thought Opie might use his extra nickel to purchase a piece of pie from a child who did not enjoy sweets as much as he did. Either that, or she was just joking, something she didn't do all that often. Either way, like you said, this is a wonderful episode. Laura Lee Hobbs, dime store clerk & gold truck watcher extraordinaire and, at one time, lunch room worker--and those ladies WORK HARD and I admire them bunches! Aunt Bee would have made a great lunch room supervisor! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Aug 2001 20:56:24 -0400 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Sightings Saw part of an old Doris Day/Ronald Reagan movie today and spotted Mr. Foley and the first Floyd! My brothers are always quick to point that out whenever that episode is on. It's not often that one of MY favorite things and THEIR favorite things are the same!!! And I will admit that while I don't usually like Scooby Doo, that episode is funny. What are the chances?? I just saw the Gomer Pyle episode in which Aunt Bee appears. She is upset with Sergeant Carter, (about how he is yelling at Gomer) talks on the radio, and then ends up appearing as a guest on that guys TV show later that week. I just wondered what are the odds of a little housewife from North Carolina appearing on TV so many different times?? She had her own cooking show. She was on that game show and won all the prizes. She was filmed as the Foster Furniture Polish lady. She was also backstage on The Keevy Hazelton Show, and was mentioned by Howard Sprague on Uncle Tim's Talent time. She was portrayed by a younger actress on "Sheriff without a gun!"..and then, of course, the Gomer episode. (Did I forget any?) What a knack for getting on the tube! - --------------------------------- Unseen people I would like to see. The Milo boys, Edna Thoge (debate team), Vicki Harms (that snow-cone slurpin girl) plain Claude Beamon, Al Becker, Laura Lee Hobbs (of course), Hugo Hotflash (the German Soldier) Edgar Coleman (Hymnbook man), Jack Egbert (no prize), Phoebe (that Barney dated), Beasto Mareesto (Now who was she?), how about this--Mrs.. Briscoe Darling.! What do you think she was like? - ------------------------------- Did they ever show the Mayberry industrial zone??? Where were the furniture factory and the pickle factory? - --------------------------- Those wedding shots of Andy and Helen are from a Mayberry RFP episode--not a TAGS episode - ------------------------------ Hey was anyone around Mayberry referred to only by their last name???(not preceded by Mr. or Mrs.) I was wondering as I watched Sgt Carter yell at "Pyle". I know in that day it wasn't considered as respectful. The first cases I could think of were Ole Man Kelsey, and O'Malley. Are you just gonna sit there or are you comin' with me??? To get them dogs!
