I was watching the manicurist episode last night also, and asked myself the
same question. I don't recall ever seeing a beauty parlor in mayberry. Have
you?

- ------------------------------
In response to this question, there was a beauty parlor. Remember the
episode when Barney was locked in the bank vault? He broke through the wall
of the beauty shop to get out. There were about 3 ladies sitting under
dryers.

I have on tape at least one instance where Andy Griffith comes right out and
says, "Some people believe that Mayberry was based on my hometown. It's
not. It's a fictional place." This is from the reunion where Andy goes
over clips from the show with Ron Howard, Don Knotts, Jack Dodson, Jim
Nabors, and George Lindsay. However, as some have pointed out, there are so
many similarities between the fictional Mayberry and the real Mt. Airy that
it's hard not to believe that the one was based on the other. My personal
opinion is that Mr. Griffith was trying to say that there is no real
Mayberry, so don't go to Mt. Airy thinking that it is Mayberry. But to me,
it's obvious that there was some "borrowing" done. At any rate, the real
point of all this is that we enjoy BOTH places!

Andy Griffith might not have meant for Mt. Airy to be Mayberry, but this fan
has to have a place to GO to and CALL Mayberry and Mt. Airy is that place. I
don't want to get in trouble with the law but, when I climb aboard that sweet
chariot, I want the body I leave behind to be cremated and my ashes scattered
over Mayberry - Now just where do you think 'bout near EVERYBODY will think
that place will be. Uh huh - I told ya.
Goober Linda - I ain't anxious to go but when it's time, I want everything to
be in order and NO interlopers.

That has to be one of the all time funniest moments on the show. The woman
under the dryer sees Barney crash through a wall, in a dress, and doesn't
think anything of it other than Barney's working another case. Just thinking
about it makes me crack up and makes me think of the kind of dry humor you
find in the Coen brothers' movies...

One of the episodes I recall showing the beauty parlor
was the episode where the man from Hollywood visited
and wanted to make a movie in Mayberry. I believe the
beauty parlor was open 24 hours a day to accomodate
all the business. Gloria "if you got chickens to

Perhaps the rub here is the difference between the words "based" and
"borrowed". If Mr. Griffith did not intend to "base" Mayberry on Mt. Airy,
it is still very possible that he "borrowed" ideas, characters, and places
from Mt. Airy because it was within his scope of experience.

Well said. I would hope that speculating on such things would only produce
interesting discussion - I can't think that anyone would have any kind of
distress over a quote. Well, not unless they have a 'compelsion' about it!

I had the priviledge of seeing Our beloveded David Browning
recently at the Oakboro Music Hall along with the local Darling
Boys Band, and let me tell ya folks, they are some kind of gooooood. If
you have'nt seen DB as the Mayberry Deputy
you are missing out, If ever Barney Fife was reincarcerated
(Or is it reincarnated ) he found his way into David.

"At a Boy Luther"

Also in todays (Sunday) paper (Charlotte Observer) they had an
article on Mayberry Days for this year stating that
Howard Morris (Ernest T. Bass) will be making his first trip to
the event, as well as Betty Lynn (Thelma Lou).
Thay had a wonderful picture of David and Allan with
George Lindsey (Goober) from 1999.

and Don't forget Jim Nabors (Gomer Pyle) will be in concert
at the Governors Palace theater in Pigeon Forge, TN
on Oct. 13

Sorry Iffin I got long winded, but the Spirit of Mayberry is
