"...but yore heart was shaped in a bowl!" Poor people often put a bowl on a
kid's head and cut everything that hangs out...except, hopefully the ears!

BTW, Alberta Nelson (Mayberry's Flora) was cast in nearly all of those
mid-1960s beach movies with Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon/Tommy
Kirk/Dwayne Hickman. She was--with one exception, "Muscle Beach Party," where
she played one of Don Rickles (another Mayberry alum who was in most of these
movies, too) muscle girls--a member of Erik von Zipper's (Harvey Lemback) Rat
Pack as either a character called "Puss" (her colleague was "Boots") or as
her real name Alberta.

What Briscoe said was your heart was shaped in a bowl. What people in the
South did was to give "Chili-bowl" haircuts. Basically, you would comb the
individual's hair all down from the top, put a bowl on their head, then cut
the hair around the rim of the bowl. Cheap but effective. So Briscoe was
saying that Ange was at heart a country boy. Well that's my "odd facts
known by few".

Briscoe Darling said that while Andy's haircut was city-style, his heart
was shaped in a bowl. This is a reference to an old fashioned method of
cutting hair used by rural, self-taught barbers. An appropriately sized bowl
would be put on your head, then all the hair that stuck out beyond the bowl
would be cut off. Briscoe meant that Andy was good ole plain folk at heart.

A Bowl. It refers to people getting their haircuts at home and using a bowl
to shape the hair. This was quite common in when people weren't able to or
refused to get to the barber shop.

As an even better storyline...you can have Lucy track down Richard Keith
Theriboux who played "Little Ricky" on I Love Lucy, and "ran away" to
Mayberry to become one of Opie's pals in several TAGS episodes, including the
character of Johnny Paul Jason in "Andy Discovers America."

Brisco said, "Your haircut may be city style, but your heart was shaped in
a bowl".
I think they used to put a bowl over your head to help outline a hair cut.

>>>

There may be multiple responses to this one, but what Briscoe says is " ...
shaped in a bowl." It's a reference to an amateurish or low-budget type of
haircut (Floyd would never approve, except maybe on an alley cat) in which
someone would put an upside-down bowl on your head, and just cut off all of
the hair that was still visible outside the rim of the bowl. Moe Howard of
the Three Stooges is a classic example.

So anyway, what Briscoe was driving at was that even though Andy had a
sophisticated hairstyle similar to those sported by "snooty" people, he was
still a down-to-Earth kind of guy who was always generous and willing to
help anyone in time of need.

Yes it "could've" happened but is as improbable as a Gold
Truck bound for Knoxville (from Denver) overshooting
Kentucky by a state or two to go through Mayberr! :-D

I live in Va., near NC, and they'd have had to get REALLY
LOST to end up driving through Mayberry on their way down
Rt. 1 (back in those days - Rt. 95 today) to Florida.
They'd be about 5 hours out of their way to end up in
Mayberry.

Now, if they'd been on their way to Nashville for Ricky to
record an album.....THAT has possibilities!

I can see them now - Lucy in jail peering through the bars
going; "Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh" and Barney yelling "Nip
it! Nip it! Nip it!"

It would've been a hoot!

Subject: MD01 TAGS Videos Raffle

Surry Arts Council has acquired a set of the first 10 TAGS videos issued
from Columbia House and will be raffling them off during Mayberry Days.
Most of the tapes are still shrink wrapped and all are brand new. Tickets
are only $1 each and you do not need to be present to win. Anyone who is
interested can purchase raffle tickets by mail and SAC will fill out your
ticket. All advanced tickets join the others purchased during Mayberry Days
for the drawing at the TAGSRWC Dinner Meeting on Saturday.

Winners will be contacted by phone and SAC will even pay shipping costs to
get the package to you. 500 tickets will be available and all money raised
helps fund their after-school and other arts programs throughout the year.

These are by far the best TAGS videos available, and with a little luck,
they can be yours for FAR less than what I paid for mine through the
subscription (but that doesn't mean I won't buy a few tickets and sell the
tapes to someone else if I win!)

You can mail your name and phone number with a check or money order (made
out to Surry Arts Council) for the number of tickets you'd like to purchase
to:

TAGS fans,

It's not too hard for me to figure out the discrepancy of Opie walking
to school--sometimes through town and sometimes on a dirt road. I grew up
less than a hundred yards from my elementary school yet still managed to
find ways home that took me more than an hour some days. I think Opie
would call it "Adventure Walkin'!"

How about Ricky "discovering" Bobby Fleet and his band with the Beat.
Meanwhile, the Darlings capture Lucy, and Fred finds his long lost cousin,

In other episode, we could Wally, Beaver, June and Ward come to Mayberry on
vacation to FL. Car breaks down, & Beav & Op become friends

Subject: "I Love Lucy " and TAGS

I believe that TV Land is showing the unedited versions of "I Love Lucy'
in honor of its 50th anniversary. I certainly hope they do the same when
TAGS reaches 50. Maybe we should all start e-mailing TV Land in about 8
and a half years to request the unedited TAGS episodes when TAGS' 50th
comes along. The comment Briscoe Darling made to Andy was "That hair
cut of yours may be city style, but your heart was shaped in a
bowl." The reference is to a "bowl" haircut, which is a method used by a
person who is not a trained hair stylist, as opposed to getting a "big
city" haircut from a barber. I suppose that people who live in the hills
like the Darlings cut each other's hair rather than making the trip to
town and spending the money to have it cut by a barber. Mary Grace

For me, the explanation as to where Opie is coming from is simple. He was
coming from school! When I was that age, I walked to and from school, too.
Going to school in the morning was a pretty direct trip, cause I had a time I
had to be there, but coming home could take a lotlonger and lead just about
anywhere in town! That was one of the joys of being young, in a small town and
during a safer and quieter time.

>Subject: (what)
>That hair cut of yours may be city style, but your heart was shaped in a
>>(what)."

Brisoce says his heart was shaped in a bowl, referencing a supposed country
tradition of using a bowl for a haircut. My mom used to threaten to do that
when I was growing longer hair when it first became fashionable for boys. She
would say "I'll just put a bowl on your head and cut off whatever hair hangs
out below the rim!" This has been credited as a country thing, and it may
really be, although I don't anyone (and I do have some country relatives) who
ever had a haircut that way.

Anybody in the group ever had a bowl-cut?

Lots of luck to you and yours!
