Hello to you all from way up north in Canada. I love to hear you all talk about Mayberry Days! It's my dream to go there some day! When I read about the happenings I escape for a few moments and pretend I was there too... and it's very pleasant. Thanks for that! Some day I hope it'll be real for me! Sure is great to have the digest back! I missed it!! ... and to the "dignified school teacher" who did the impression of Ernest T. at the faculty lunch... you can come teach at my school any time!! Captivated by this vision from my youth, I left it on for a few minutes and they moved on to the little live action adventure serial they showed called "Danger Island." One of the good guys was none other than Flip Conroy. dan ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Oct 2001 05:15:16 -0700 (PDT) From: Robin Jaynette <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Mayberry Days What a wonderful time me and my kids had at Mayberry Days! She told me she has gotten a "big head" from all the compliments she recieved...And how about that young man that looks so much like Opie! The parade was excellent, the food was good, the music was good, it was all good! Just one word for it...BIG, it was really BIG! I had my first pork chop sandwich from Snappy Lunch, very good, got to visit the barber shop and sit awhile, I really enjoyed the cinema showing "No Time For Sargents" and "The Ghost And Mr. Chicken" the smell of that theater took me back about 40 years to my own town and our old theater where I first saw those movies. I took my son Andy who is 13 and even though I have told him a lot about what things were like in our town when I was growing up, in Mt. Airy I could show him in person. He really enjoyed it all. For anyone who has not been I would encourage you to think about going to Mayberry Days at least once, it is really worth the trip! Our annual community service project raised $2291.50 for SAC to use for their many arts programs throughout the year, including Mayberry Days. There were some outstanding items again this year (and some outstanding bidding as well!) I appreciate everyone who donated things and helped out during the auction. I don't know that we will ever have another year this good, but I was very pleased with the participation and the results this time. I would like to send a special thanks to: - - Kathy Taylor for creating the wonderful Mayberry Days quilt. - - TAGSRWC & Jim Clark for donating a squad car cookie jar with Don Knotts autograph (it recieved the highest bid). - - Bob Smith for his financial stability during a storm of transactions. Thank you to everyone for all the Mayberry spirit. The voice of Leonard Blush on the radio is Howard Morris (episode 128) so my guess is Leonard Blush is the stage name for George the TV repair guy (episode 140). George is a shy guy so I guess he doesn't want anyone to know who he is and wears a mask to hide his identity while singing on the radio. :-) That's my theory anyway! Ed O'Dwyer "History! That's My Subject!" Chapter Alpharetta, GA ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Oct 2001 07:52:23 EDT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Days Mayberry Days 2001 was an extremely good show! There was only one "thing" missing, and that was Phil "Ernest T" Lee!! He adds a lot to the celebration but his absence was excused for the birthday of his daughter. Then, we had the REAL Ernest T with us! What a blast he is! We arrived in the area Thursday and made our annual pilgrimmage up Pilot Mountian to enjoy the view. The skies were blue, clear, and cool, with hardly a cloud the whole weekend, which made for some great photo opportunities. After checking in to the hotel, we rode out to the graves of the original Siamese twins, Eng and Chang Bunker, which is very easy to find. We did learn Eng and Chang in Siamese means Right and Left! After that we rode up past Fancy Gap to the Sidna Allen home, and the history behind that is worth researching, as he was the main player in the Hillsville Massacre. Then, we rode back into town to the Visitor Center to see what had been added new to the collection of Andy memorabilia. Friday we had a good breakfast and went into town for the opening ceremonies, but first to the Emporium where we got an autographed photo from Howard Morris, who was dressed in his rock throwin' outfit. Allan was kind enough to let us know we were in the new book writ by Jewell Kutzer, but I barely made it. The top of my face was cut off but wife was in full view, in the color photo of the meeting of the internet group last year. I missed having one this year, or did I just miss the meeting? The rest of the day was spent roaming around enjoying the sounds of happy people trying to forget the troubles of the Nation for just as short while, as the sign at the AGP stated, "Remembering a simpler, happier time." Saturday we arrived in town around 8 and chose a good spot to view the parade. As usual, it was great! How some of the "hillbilly" cars still run in beyond me! And how about that line of Model A Fords! Then it was time to get tickets for next year's show, and by time we got to the playhouse, we had to go for the 6th row back. This show is so popular now maybe there needs to be one on Friday as well! Or move to a larger auditorium, if there is one! After getting our tickets we did some listening to the music outside, had a barbecue sammich with a RC cola, did some more roaming around before giving in to the aches and pains in the old feet and legs and going back to the hotel to rest. The Col. Tim's Talent Time was one of the best. Big Maude was the hit of the show this year, even though "she" only had a small part of it. The most touching part was the closing when "Charlene" led us in singing two songs, the last of which was God Bless America. Very proper considering all that has happened lately. Even "Elvis" dedicated the song Trilogy to the fallen heroes of the horror. All too soon the days had to end and we all went our separate ways. We met new friends, renewed smiles with old friends, found out "Wanita Beasley" Polly Scales is retiring from her shop, Simply Mayberry, two doors down from Snappy Lunch. Sunday AM we rode to Laurel Hill, the home of JEB Stuart, then back into town for a last goodbye to "Wanita" and then made our way back home with loads of memories and lots of photos and film. Almost all my photos this time were digital so there aren't many to have developed. Bit of advice about digital: Forget action shots.. by time the shutter clicks, the action has moved, a head has turned, a smile has gone. Nontheless, I still have some great memories to live forever and I thank all those who helped make it so, especially Allan who was in two places at the same time! Way to go Allan! just kidding... he can only be in one place at the time but his schedule had him split! Until next year's celebration of the greatest show ever produced, I am stepping back into the shadows for an occasional comment, but mostly just reading the comments of others.. Welford M. We weren't able to go as this is my last week in the Navy (Sunday is my last day on Active Duty before I retire), and we hope to make it next year. Got an email over the weekend, that Billy Ray Lathum who played banjo for The Dillards in the 70's was having chest pains on Friday and was supposed to be having a double bypass yesterday. Will let the Bulletin Board know when I hear how he is doing. Billy Ray was also a member of the Kentucky Colonels, though I am not sure if he was a member when the Colonels were on TAGS. I first saw Billy Ray Lathum with The Dillards back around 70 or 71 with The Dillards. The last time I had the opportunity to see him was in 1987 when my wife and I went to CA for Christmas after we got married. She got to meet my folks, and Billy Ray and his wife Joanne at a concert they were doing in Bonsall, CA. I am so glad to read everyone's comments on this years Mayberry Days. I wasn't able to attend this year and it breaks my heart because Ernest T. is one of my favorite characters, but I am able to enjoy it through all of your comments. I am sure Thelma Lou was as beautiful as ever also. Everybody keep writing and letting those of us not able to attend enjoy it with your comments. ...everybody on the truck.....
