This is the one when Warren gives Otis the mosaic kit, to give him something
to do besides drinking. Otis makes an ugly cow and gives it to Andy. But he
does much better, when he's gassed!!

I e-mailed TVLand to compliment them on their patriotic ad and I urge
you all to do the same. The address is [EMAIL PROTECTED] Whoever
posts their schedules sure makes a lot of mistakes; the Lucy marathon
schedule was a mess so you have to be careful in labeling any tapes you
make. As far as petitioning them to show uncut TAGS episodes, many of us
have tried over the years to no avail; they need to cut them in order to
have time for ads; probably lots of big-time sponsors paid big bucks to
help sponsor Lucy and were even highlighted in promos for the marathon
itself several times in advance many times.

You have to wonder if ole Bradford Taylor has been dispatched to the Middle
East again to help the State Department. I'd forgotten all about that
reference used in the color episode featuring the big-talking (but not too
truthful) Jack Albertson character until seeing it again recently. Even if
he couldn't start that chain of Ice Cream shops, he sure could do us some
good over there. Hey wait a minute...do you suppose that freight train goes
all the way to the Middle East???.

Bradford Taylor, you may recall, got lots of Mayberrians to invest in his
Aunt Bee's Homemade Ice Cream venture. This made me wonder. How many
different Business ventures did Mayberrians invest in? (a few good, most
not so good)
1) That Record of all the local artists...(actually only one that paid
off)
2) A treasure map, and supposed attempt to dig it up with special
equipment.
3) The Ice Cream Caper mentioned above.
4) Miracle Salve--indirectly I guess
5) Coin Collecting (Buffalo Nickel) does it count if just Barney fell for
it??
6) Goober buying the Gas Station

Were there any more bogus Business investments?

Something's just occurred to me while watching the episode in which Dud and

you may get several mentions of this same quote, but in the "Up in Barney's
Room" episode, when Mrs. Mendlebright was about to marry that con man,
Barney stated that "I hope it ends in a quickie Mexican Divorce"...or words
to that effect.

Thanks to Mike for the info on the 1963 Squad car. I will have to check up on
that with the Melody Ranch. I have never seen anything mentioned on the site
about the location of any of the originals and I figured that someone had to
think they were worth hanging onto. I guess they could have been recycled in
those days onto other shows as well.

On the Taylor home, in the book I saw with a floor plan of TV Family Homes it
did have only Andy's, Aunt Bee's, and Opie's Bedroom, but NO guest room! I do
think it would be a neat house to duplicate in looks and I really feel that
someplace, someone has built one to look like it.

It wasn't Barney who got Otis hooked on mosaics but Warren.

Hey Dan,
This is one I believe I can answer. Being raised in
the great county of Wilkes, NC, city of North
Wilkesboro (sad to see NASCAR leave), I can attest
there really is a Myers Lake, actually it is called
Lake Myers. It is located just outside of
Winston-Salem, NC. It is a tourist area, although not
so much related to TAGS. Don't get me wrong, the
relationship to TAGS is mentioned a few times.
Anyway, it is a huge lake with fishing (the best
relaxing sport around), peddle boating, lake-side
cabins, camping utilities, etc.. (the works). A great
place to get back to family and relax at the same
time.

If you decide to drop in, I know you will be greeted
with the NC charm I grew up with.

This Is In response to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]". The episode
that you and your brother are thinking about, as far
as the mosaics are concerned Is a Color Episode, and
It was WARREN who showed Otis the mosaics.

In response to the question about Barney buying Otis a
mosaic kit, it wasn't Barney, it was Warren. In one
of the VERY few "Warren" episodes, and one of the even
fewer in which Warren is acceptable as Andy's deputy,
Warren tries to get Otis into mosaics as a way to
"rehabilitate" him. (Sound familiar?)

Have a great weekend everybody!

It was a color episode, about 1965 or so. Otis gets into mosaics and makes
an ugly looking cow that he is so proud of, he wants the Taylors to show it
off in their living room and he wants to feature it at an art show, and
everyone is truly up in arms about it. At the end of the episode Otis makes
a really good looking one of a small Spanish town or something and then goes
back to drinking. It's the kind of episode that likely wouldn't have been
as funny in black and white, and in fact was probably inspired by the fact
that the show had just gone in color (because of the colored tiles).

Actually, it's Warren who introduces Otis to mosaics, not Barney. The
episode is "Otis the Artist," one of only two color episodes in which Otis
appears.

In the epilogue from "Cyrano Andy," the two couples are back at Ellie's
house, when Ellie goes to the kitchen to prepare dessert (pie). In an
effort to get some "private time" with Thelma Lou, Barney suggests that
maybe Andy should go and help Ellie in the kitchen. Andy does so, but every
time Barney is about to give Thelma Lou a kiss, Andy keeps popping back in
with questions like "Hey Barney, do you want some coffee?," and "Do you want
cheese on your pie?", etc. Finally, Barney has had enough and heads to the
kitchen to get his own pie and coffee.

Having worked for police and security departments in my college years, you
brought up an almost forgotten sound - and yes, I do especially notice it
when Ole' Barn is going to get serious and have a one-on-one
up-close-and-personal with Andy.

If Barney had the typical lawman's belt and leatherworks, he had the Sam
Brown belt which had lots of leather accessories to carry all the officers'
extra stuff - and they do make an incredible creaking - I personally love the
sound - it's the sound of a guy who has everything on his person to get the
job done! It is an extra-wide belt, and is used for police service as well
as the Army Officers Corps in WWI & WWII. It is wide and strong enough to
holster the saber in WWI in addition to the other standard stuff.

Sorry - probably more than you were expecting to hear about belts!

My best to you and yours!

I'm not sure how many of you heard this, but I had tuned in Rush
Limbaugh's show today (10/19) and heard some good advice from a
columnist named John McCaslin who was filling in for Mr. Limbaugh. He
advised everyone listening to "go on over to your television and turn off
the 24 hour news channel and turn on the Andy Griffith Show." He
characterized TAGS as the way to get back to a simpler time when the
worries were simpler also.

I was half listening, but when I heard the words Any Griffith my attention
was snagged. Wonderful advice I think in light of the trails and
tribulations we are experiencing now as a nation.

RE: thelma lou's job?

I attended the press briefing at this year's Mayberry Days and was able to ask
Miss Lynn why Thelma Lou never had a last name or a specific job. She said
somewhere around the fifth season there was a scene where Andy was supposed to
introduce her to a couple, and they realized she had no last name on the show.
Since she kind of liked the allure and mystery of not having a last name, she
wouldn't let the writers put one in. She responded the same way later when the
job question came up.

So it turns out Thelma Lou was more of a mystery woman than we thought! :)

Hope that answers your question!

Mayberry says thanks and happy motoring ...

I thought I'd pass along that I saw Willis Bouchey (a.k.a. Mr. O'Malley
in "Convicts-at-Large" episode) on the very first episode of "Bonanza"
that aired a week or so ago. He played one of the three rich mean
businessmen who were trying to force the Cartwrights into selling their
timber. I guess living in that cabin out in the woods for so long made
him greedy for more timber! Anybody else notice him on there?
