I caught a couple of minutes of Matlock this last weekend and Ben was
talking to a suspect when the word kleptomaniac came up. Ol' Ben chuckled
and said "I used to know a fellow who pronounced that word kleptomenerac."
I just howled!

Actually, Andy's entire monologue "Romeo & Juliet"
isn't included in the episode, and to my knowledge
that's the only time a piece of his stand-up routine
makes it into a TAGS episode.

I can think of 2 walking canes....I think. I could
have sworn that the original Ben Weaver used one at
least once, and didn't the guy that Andy shot, who
cleaned up his act in prison, use one when he got off
the bus to bring Andy a shotgun? I may be wrong on
both of these, but I know I've seen a cane or 2 on the
show, dag nabitt. I guess the boatswain's chair
(bosun's) that Andy had rigged up for Floyd doesn't
count, as we never actually saw it.

Subject: State references

I'm enjoying the state references, but didn't get to see all the first ones
(namely the A's). I was gone on a trip and have to confess that I skimmed
through some of the digests when I returned, so I have a question for Paul or
someone else who'd know. When y'all were naming Alaska, did someone mention
Goober's reference? In case it got skipped, when Lee Drake came to Mayberry
looking for Andy, Goober told her he'd left town, and that he thought Andy went
to Alaska, and might never be coming back. I don't remember the exact line, but
that's close. Just wanted to make sure that one got mentioned (which it may
have been already).

State references

Florida--When Andy is considering going on vacation, Barney suggests maybe
going to that Alligator Farm in Florida. Also, I believe Mrs. Mendlbright's
Mother's bureau (That Barney put a hot plate on) came all the way by bus
from (forget city) Florida.
District of Columbia--Didn't the fake FBI guys who want to give Andy and
Barney a medal say something about coming from Washington DC??
Georgia--I know there are better ones, but what about the Bus from Macon?
Delaware-- I thinks its lost with Connecticut in Griffith lore.

Have you trained noticiers noticed in some of the early episodes with Gomer
that his voice tone is not consistent? Sometimes it sounds like a cross
between Gomer's usual voice and Mr. Opie Talyor Sr. (deeper). Notice in
Man in a Hurry, how his voice is lower when he gets back his truck keys from
Mr.' Tucker and says "I'll keep a better eye on them from here on in" (or
words to that affect).

I got to see some Mayberry RFD episodes that were taped for me during the
marathon not to long ago. I vaguely remember RFD since I was just a kid and
not that big of a Mayberry fan at that time. It was interesting to see one
show that followed a Griffith show pattern almost to the letter. A guy
comes into town. He has no job (oops--I was mendlebrighting there for a
second). A drifter comes into town. He befriends Aunt Bee. Andy (or Sam)
thinks he's a phony. The show is mostly about this stranger. An RFD
episode has a guy who is a dowser (finds water with a diving rod)--same
actor as the hobo with a Patella Oblongata (game leg)--convincing Aunt Bee
of his authenticity, but is doubted by Sam Jones who takes a more scientific
approach. Good story. I am also surprised to see how many of these RFD
episodes that Andy appears in. I know there's a book out there on RFD.
Does any one know how many RFD episodes Andy did?

Great, I think Old Blue's ready to go catch a crook...as long as the
crook's got a pocket full of lollipops.

Hey all,

Some rude rock-throwin' person said to wait for the States in order. OK, but
Puerto Rico isn't a State. Does anyone know if it is ever mentioned--am I
right in thinkin' that Howard wins a trip to there, Paul?

I need to know what episodes (if any) it is mentioned, b/c my Spanish teacher
really wants ta see'um.

"Oh, yeah Howard, real spiffy, your in the cool group now!"

Subject: Interesting TAGS Item.. Anybody Ever Seen These?

Hey Folks,

I recently picked up an interesting Mayberry item off of eBay. It was set
of two VHS tapes that apparently were sent out by TV Land to Media, etc as
some sort of a promotional item. They come in black Library cases with
labels that bear the name "Chelsea Television Studios, New York". The
first is labeled "The Andy Griffith Show: Opie the Birdman" and the second
tape (oddly enough) is the TAGS Pilot from The Danny Thomas Show! It also
has the words "Nick Marketing" on the label, which again leads me to
believe this is some sort of promo item. When you play them the two tapes
bear TV Land title screens, so they are apparently dubs of TV Land's in
house airing masters as opposed to the Viacom originals. (I'm told TV Land
gets the full uncut episodes from Viacom unlike other stations and does
their own editing, Paul?? Any input on this point??) The Danny Thomas
Show episode runs about 22 minutes and the TAGS episode has a listed run
time of 23:00 and both tapes have black space where the commercials would go.

My question is... has anybody ever seen any of these tapes and does anyone
know when/for what reason they were sent out?

Thanks,
Chad Palmer
