>>>What is strange is that last summer [TVLAND] ran the "episodes of color",
but when it was time for the b&w's to begin, they skipped so many episodes,
but when they run 160-249, they seem to run every single
one!
>>>

One possibility is that they skipped over some b & w episodes because many
of those episodes were part of a just-completed marathon, or an upcoming
marathon. They don't show many (if any) color episodes during their
marathons.

The other possibility is that you're consulting an episode guide which is in
the correct broadcast order. For some inexplicable reason, TVLand chooses
to show the episodes in the wrong order; that is, the order in which they
were FILMED. The order in which the episodes were originally broadcast (the
correct order in which the eipsodes should be viewed) is slightly different.

Here are two examples of what I mean by the "wrong order:" When the filmed
order is used, in season 4, Gomer leaves Mayberry to join the Marines, but
then he's still seen in Mayberry for several subsquent episodes. Another
glaring example is when the Taylor family inexplicably returns home from
Hollywood to find a huge crowd waiting for them at the bus stop, and then in
the "next" episode they leave on their trip for Hollywood. Doesn't make
sense!

This episode provides us with a unique glimpse of a previous episode: Gomer
walks into the courthouse, hoping to find Andy, who turns out to be away on
vacation. As Gomer looks around, he experiences a "flashback," and we see
the scene from the pilot episode in which he marches into the courthouse and
tells Andy he's just joined the USMC.

The flashback is a familiar scene to every TAGS fan, but the two unique
things about this scene that many may never have noticed are:

A: it's presented in sepiatone instead of black and white

2: there is no laugh track!

Compare the clip from the original episode with the flashback, and the
absence of our old friend the laugh track seems somehow eerie.

That's likely because many of the B&W episodes had been featured in
marathons, moreso than the color ones.

This discussion comes up from time to time and I, for one, appreciate the
color years. Maybe they are not as well done as the earlier ones but there
are still some true gems in the mix (Andy the umpire, "Dinner at Eight," "The
Battle of Mayberry," "Aunt Bee Learns to Fly," etc). The infamous "Jump the
Shark" website has a lot of highly-juiced discussion on this very topic, some
very negative (but I have to admit, often funny comments) interspersed with a
few comments from fans who truly appreciate the show and discuss specific
episodes they like and don't like. Allan doesn't allow such negativity on
the list (and I like that; I get sick and tired of people in unmoderated
newsgroups telling me to "learn to read" because they didn't like what I
say), but if you really want to see what a knock down drag 'em out TAGS
discussion looks like, there's the place.

For those that are looking for Tags videos
remember the old slogan "Buyer Beware"
Now we all know that Columbia House is the more expensive
route, but remember the old adage that "You get what you pay for". CH is known
for their quality and not quantity, their videos are from some very good film
stock and have the original "Fishing Hole" theme music .
I have bought some of the cheaper tapes also (I jest couldn't hep
mysef) and a lot of the cheaper ones have the ATROCIOUS
alternate theme music and the quality of the pictures were usually not as good
as CH.
Now I know nobody asked me, but there's my 2 cents worth.

That may be true, but as the old saying goes, "You get what you pay for." 4
of the most complete episodes you can find per tape for $19.99. And the
quality is unmatched as to what I have found anywhere. Plus most of the tapes
and DVDs that you find don't even have the original theme. (I have a lot of
them and enjoy them all, but the CH tapes are unmatched.)

I'll get off my soap box now ...

Sorry this is coming in so late but I have been on a hunting trip to Montata.
I remember that in the episode where Andy first meets Helen, Andy is talking
to Opie about his History. In he office he tells the group of boys about the
minute men, and makes a reference of Paul Revere, now this reference may take
care of the reference to Conn. or Deleware. Sorry my history also suffers, I
don't remember if Paul Revere's ride takes place in either of these states.
But it might take care of a reference to another state. That is if you don't
get to technical. Hope this helps.Mike in Kansas (stand by cymbalist )
