I seem to remember Malcolm Merriweather doing a couple of tricks for Opie.
Col Harvey sent some smoke signals with his hands and Mr. McBeevee made
smoke come out of his ears and I recollect somebody (was that McBeevee?)
pulling a quarter out of Opie's ear.

Most likely not. Don's 1965 contract with the studio (I believe it was
Universal) was for exactly three years and it would have expired just after
Andy decided he didn't want to do the show anymore.

However, Elizabeth does have an important animated role on her resume: the
voice of LadyFish in Don Knott's "The Incredible Mr. Limpet" (1964).

We've discussed before that the very name "All Souls Church" implies there
was no denomination...or all denominations, whichever way you want to put it.

Regarding the question of "magic in Mayberry", you could consider the slight of
hand tricks of Malcom Merriwether (Paper ladder, etc)magic. And was it Mr.
McBevee who could make smoke come out of his ears?? Of course the more
mystical gypsy magic was on display in "Three Wishes for Opie" when Barney used
the cards to determine the how many wishes were to be granted by Count Estvan
Teleky. Tom Silby coming back from the dead was a good trick... Are there
more??
Are we only considering legal professions in the topic of professions in
Mayberry? Don't forget we've had pickpockets, bankrobbers and other "shady"
characters who appeared to make a living in the criminal arena.

There was the hobo played by Buddy Ebsen, who kept appearing to do little
tricks with gum machines, and I think the gypsies wanted everyone to believe
they had magic too. Don't think anyone ever really did any unexplained
magic, though I could be wrong...

Subject: Xmas in Mayberry
In response to the person who said we should not use "Xmas" in the interest of
keeping Christ in Christmas, I had always heard that "Xmas" was a very old
abbreviation and was based on the assumption that the "X" is a symbol dating
back to medieval times that represents "Christ." The "X" symbol is seen even
today in some churches (on buildings, stained glass windows, paraphernalia,
etc.) in representation of the cross. So, based on this, it is perfectly
proper (as well as Christian) to use "Xmas" as an abbreviation for "Christmas."
I'll admit that the full word is better, though.
On the professions question, has anyone mentioned "Chiropractor"? Andy was
supposedly studying to be one when he was posing as Floyd's son in "Floyd, the
Gay Deceiver."

Subject: Similar Script?
Date: Tue, 11 Dec 2001 18:48:41 -0600
Tonight as I was watching Tags, the episode where Flip Conroy comes to town
to coach the football team, I had an interesting thought pop into my head.
The man who introduced Flip to the boys also played Mr. Olson on Little
House on the Praire. There was an eposisode of little house when a former
football great came to Walnut Grove and was introduced to the kids by Mr.
Olson.
In that episode, great demands were put on the kids and many were forced to
make choices, much like Opie had to.
I wonder if the man who played Mr. Olson suggested the TAGS script be made
into a Little House episode.
