In the episode "Keeper of the Flame", when Jubal Foster burned down his barn
Andy asked him why he didn't call the "Volunteer Fire Brigade" (I think that's
what he called it). Someone already mentioned this episode, but only the fact
that they saw folks running around trying to put out the fire.

"I wonder what causes that?"

Quite possibly because they showed them at other times...like the "TV Land to
Go" marathon, the "Firsts" marathon (which is why the premiere is missing),
and the Christmas marathon.

Those were the only Emmys won by the show, but it was nominated for many
others, including Best Comedy Series. Part of the reason it didn't win more,
very likely, is because it had to compete with Sheldon Leonard's other
classic show of the era, "The Dick Van Dyke Show," which won a truckload of
Emmys during those years.

In the show about the traveling shoes salesman that they
rumor to be a TV talent scout, Barney says "New York is
900 miles from Mayberry".
How can that be? I live 660 driving miles from my
relatives in Pennsylvania and they live about 60 from
NYC, and I am 70 miles or so south of the SC/NC line.
This doesn't add up. My only thought is that maybe at
that time the Federal Highway system had not been built
and maybe driving distance was indeed 900 miles along
the "blue Highways".
What do you all think?

Hey State-watchers

I'm not sure if we had one for Idaho or not. I just saw the Count Istvan
Telecky/3 wishes for Opie episode on my local station. In it, Barney shows
Andy a book on the supernatural. The author is from Boise Idaho!

If you never saw that lamp then don't talk!

Hey Everybody,

I've been waiting since the 80's, but I finally got "Return to Mayberry" on
tape. My eyes kept misting over: when Andy got out of his car at the
beginning of the show and they played the old intro walking to the fishing
hole, and also at the end when he and Barney lowered the flag. Man I lost
it.. I thought it was really cool that they re-created the Courthouse set
so well. It really looked the same. Strange that the mere sight of a
television set can be so comforting. Man, the writing was pure vintage
gold.

One question: Don Knott's daughter Karen is listed in the credits, but I
couldn't think who she might have played. Does anyone know?

I checked out Allan's Jean Carson site and had a good ol' time. Now I have
to save up for a photo.

Hey Paul, thanks for the info on Jack Burns. I don't remember the
commercial you mentioned, but maybe I can find it on the net.

By the way, if the Mayberry singles group is starting, I'll be glad to join.
I'm dusting off the old Salt and Pepper in anticipation :)

Hope everyone is well,

Jason <-- finished 12th in his class

Those were the only six Emmys (Emmies?) awarded to TAGS, however several
people connected with TAGS won Emmys for their work on other shows. First
place probably goes to James L. Brooks, who must have won a couple of dozen,
or so it seems.

Well, they don't "say it right out like that," but we do learn in #59
"Three's a Crowd" that Mayberry is indeed in North Carolina. Barney is
looking for a letter that was said to have come from the state's attorney's
office in Raleigh.

You're right though, not until the color episodes does anybody specifically
say "Mayberry, North Carolina." Before that, they kept it deliberately
vague to give the writers more freedom, and to maintain the "fantasy"
aspect.

He played three different roles, as follows:

Mr. Jason in "Off to Hollywood" (he incompetently repairs Andy's suitcase)

Doyle Perkins in "Opie's First Love" (he sells Opie a new suit)

He will be missed.

Does anyone here know about the circumstances
surrounding his death? He played Jubal Foster in one
episode (he burnt his own barn & blamed Opie's club),
and wrote the lyrics to the TAGS theme. Supposedly he
did himself in with barbiturates because he thought he
was going blind. Can anyone else verify this? A
little Mayberry Babylon gossip!

Someone recently posted a message saying they had seen the obituary of actor
Owen Bush, noting that the obituary stated he was a character actor on TAGS,
but the person posting did not know who he played on the show. Well, if you go
to www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc.com and click on the "Cast member/Episode
Database," you can type in any character name or actor's name and get a
complete list of every episode they appeared in. Try it, you'll see that Owen
Bush was in three episodes. He played Mr. Jason in Episode 166, "Off to
Hollywood." He was Mr. Hammond in Episode 219, "Goober's Contest," and he
played the Clothier in Episode 220, "Opie's First Love." This is a great
database.....the most interesting fact about it is that you can see other
actors who played several different characters on TAGS. For example, did you
know that veteran character actor Allan Melvin played EIGHT different
characters on EIGHT different episodes of TAGS!! (He was actually in more
episodes of TA!
GS!
than Howard Morris!!!) Mr. Melvin would later go on to play Sam the Butcher
on "The Brady Bunch," and Barney Hefner on "All in the Family." Also, look at
Burt Mustin---he played at least 8 different characters on THIRTEEN different
episodes!! He, too, by the way, would later appear on "All in the Family."
Even Howard Morris appeared on one TAGS episode as someone OTHER than Ernest T.
Bass. Can you guess who? Then look it up!!

Go ahead, Opie, give her some GOOD,

Danny Grady ([EMAIL PROTECTED])

I was watching the episode where Goober tried to get a

while they were all singing around the piano, I saw
Maggie Peterson/Charlene Darling playing the piano.
In the closing credits she was listed as: "Doris". I
have only seen Charlene in one other episode as
someone other than Charlene. Has anyone else seen her
in more than that?

I say "up to" a lot, also, and my husband laughs at me because often where I am
going is either down or over instead of up! I like your theory that it is a

Anyone know where it came from. I know it's not the one he bought from the

know???? Thanks
