Good eyes, Mark! Yes, that's the beautiful Whitney Blake who played Dorothy

Apparently there was once a big collision between a fire truck and a garbage
truck, that Goober and one other person (help me someone) recalled vividly
years later...
It seems I remember the city's fire department being mentioned one other time
but I don't remember how...

Hey Rick I don't remember any references to a fire dept either. There are a
couple of lines in some shows about Andy going to the firehouse for a boiled
dinner and cribbage that was when Andy saved Gomers life. The other was when
Barney was screening new deputys and asked the question who would get the
right of way if a firetruck ambulance and a mail truck came to a intersection
at the same time. I am also a firefighter/paramedic in bossier city, La for
16 years. I hope more firefighters will come forward i know they are there.

It was Whitney Blake who played the wife on Hazel. And yes, she did do a
guest spot on TAGS. Lee Drake is the name of the attorney (character) she
plays that Andy meets in Raleigh in episode 226. Andy yes she is the mother
of Meredith Baxter.

In one episode, Aunt Bee mentioned to Andy that there was to be "a boiled
dinner and cribbage afterward" at the fire station. I wish they could have
had an active volunteer FD in Mayberry. It would have been funny to see
Goober and Floyd hanging on the back of the fire engine as it zoomed through
town to put out Gomer's oil fire. Shazam.

Just a note to you Rick. In the Secret Club episode, Opie and the rest of
the Tigers meet in an old barn. While Opie is the keeper of the sacred
candle, the old farmer sets fire to his own barn by knocking over a lantern
in the room where he keeps his still. Although the scene is picked up late,
when the barn is just smoldering this is one scene where there is a fire
dept. present.

Hope everyone had a very Mayberry-like Christmas...simple pleasures, great
family time, and a good spiritual focus. Lots of good posting in the Ole
Digest. Comments on a few.
State Game--Wasn't there reference to a Movie or Comic Book "The Monster
that Ate Minnesota" I'm still hung up on Missouri and Mississippi though
those would seem to be easy.
>>The other night after watching Survivor, and then watching TAGS, we
discussed the idea of a Mayberry Survivor. Has anyone ever suggested this
to the digest? <<<
Big Daddy Aka Jamey Sullivan
I too am a fan of both shows and have also thought about a "Mayberry
Survivor". About a year ago I actually wrote a three-part post to the
Digest on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire visits Mayberry" It was really fun
to combine those two favorites of mine. (let me know if you'd like a copy).
I thought about doing the same thing with Survivor..BUT the more I thought
about it, it just didn't work in my mind for this reason:
Mayberry Folk just don't like excluding anyone.
Remember how bad they felt when Henry Bennett was about to extinguish his
own torch and leave Mayberry? How about when they almost "voted off" Ed
Sawyer for being peculiar..but after a scolding from Andy, realized that the
"stranger" who loved Mayberry should have been made to feel more welcome.
There was also Frank Myers...but it was his property they thought about
expelling, but not Frank himself. Something similar happened with Mr.
Frisby...but just look at how hard the ladies fought to support him before
Andy found the still. There were a few crooks that Andy hurried out of
town..like the Buddy Ebsen character..because he was a bad influenece..and
Melissa and her "daddy" for defrauding Barney, but for the most part
Mayberry was very Inclusive.
If there were a Mayberry Survivor comprised mostly of main characters, I
think what would happen is that all 12 would vote for themselves because
they wouldn't want to hurt anyone else's feelings...."the tribe has spoken?"
Giraffes sure are selfish--lookin out for ole number one...but not dogs (or
Mayberryites)

Goober Says Hey
It seems like Andy often referred to "monthly reports" among the paperwork
that he and Barney had to do. I never really thought of what comprised
these reports until I picked up a monthly paper in a small town. Some of
you may still see these in your town, but I had not seen such a thing in
quite a while. Based on what I see in "The Hometown Treasure--a Monthly
Newsletter Serving Shipshewana and Topeka Indiana" here's what A Mayberry

I enjoyed your observations and thought I would interject a couple of
personal observations. First of all, when I travel with my brother or a
friend on business or pleasure, we regularly take the long way to see a
site or visit a city or town we decide to pass through. We will go the
long way almost every time, even to see the same site or town we saw
before. And... I don't know if this is a regional or Southern thing, but
my friends often tease me because I say I am going "Up to" a town or
city or even state that is South of me. It seems that either in my
family, or my circle of friends growing up, or perhaps even in the South
we often say "up to" meaning simply "to" especially if it is a larger
town or city than the one we are leaving "from." I really have not
researched this, but now I am determined to find out why I say "up to."

Rick,
I have AOL IM and wouldn't mind being on a Mayberry Buddy list.
Maybe we could keep this off the Digest by having folks let you or me know
they want to be added to the list, then we can do a general mailing to let
everyone interested know who wants to IM with fellow Mayberrians. I started
a new buddy group and called it "Mayberrians".
My best to you and yours!

Being on a fire department myself, right off, I can
only remember two references. However, I believe that
one was in Mayberry RFD. Don't remeber the episode
exactly, but it shows Opie going to visit the fire
station. Then there's an episode where someone calls
Andy to tell him about a boiled dinner down at the
firehouse. Believe there was some cabbage in there
somewhere too.

>>Now, I don't know about you, but to drive through Shreveport to get to
Mayberry seems a little out of 'yer' way.
I have a theory about this. In the earlier episodes (actually, the first few
seasons), no reference is made as to the exact location of Mayberry. Of
course, real towns like Raleigh and Siler City are mentioned often, which
easily creates the impression that Mayberry is in North Carolina, but no one
actually mentions the name of Mayberry's home state until we're into the color
episodes, if I'm not mistaken.
Now my theory is this: I believe the writers and producers of TAGS never made
an issue out of Mayberry's exact location to give maximum flexibility to the
story lines. In other words, in "Family Visit," Mayberry may have been a
short Pullman ride "down" from Lake Charles, while in another episode it's
near enough to Chattanooga so Andy can easily call the sheriff there (with
whom he's obviously acquainted) for information about a prisoner. So, in
"Family Visit," going through Shreveport might not be that much out of the way
if in that episode Mayberry is located somewhere, say, in Louisiana, Alabama,
or Arkansas.
Just a thought.
