Have any of you seen Ron Howard on the interview circuit for his new movie
"A Beautiful Mind"?

I've seen him on Leno and a portion of another interview. On the Leno spot,
he did mention the incident reported here in the Digest that on a family
trip, he accidentally left a teenage son at a Krispy Kreme donut store.
(there were three vehicles and they thought he was in one of the others).

Here's the Griffith connection though. This movie is about a brilliant
mathematician. Ron , and the movie's Star Richard Crowe went to some higher
math classes to get a appreciation of the character. That's a long was from
a D in Arithmetic that ole Ope got, Isn't it? And to think that Barney
thought he should just go to trade school. I just thought that was pretty
ironic.

On the singles and marrieds issue; I may have dreamed this..or got a message
from the Count, but I thought I read somewhere that keeping the main
characters single allowed them to focus on the person themselves in social
settings without the complications of how the character would react if
married. It certainly gave the writers lots of flexibility as to their
dating etc. I think it was the right formula for that show. Interestingly
some of the married couples depicted did not set the best example...like the
Silbys, or the fighting couple "Good morning Honey--Good Morning Dear". But
there were also great marriages such as the family in the Christmas episode.

When they needed a good man vs. woman spat, they seemed to use Andy and Aunt
Bee "Call the Man".

If I don't miss my guess, you've got yourself a kiss coming up here.

Hey wasn't Cousin Virgil from New Jersey? (one of the N state's we're
lookin for.)

I've seen lots of people mention that they are trying to find a last episode
or two to complete their set of taped shows. Thanks to my Mom's help I have
about 240 of the 249 on tape....most of them multiple copies on various
tapes. A friend of mine ask me if I was desperate for the missing ones, and
I'm really not because they are none of my favorites. I'm also spoiled, as
we still get daytime shows on a local station and TVland at night. SO
here's my question.

"What causes that?" Not feet falling asleep, but collectors wanting all 249
episodes on tape?
Do you plan on watching them all? Do you use them for reference when trivia
questions are asked?
How could you even keep them organized to find specific things? Do you have
a fear that they'll go off the air, but you'll still have your private stash
of tapes? just wonderin'

What about these dinners, I ain't no Rockerfeller

>>>Wasn't the girl that tricked Barney into marriage with her "daddy" from
Mississippi? I may be confused because of the strong accent.

Well, she said her "daddy" owned a cotton mill in Savannah, so we can assume
they were from Georgia, if she was telling the truth. Even if she wasn't,
it still counts as a reference to Georgia for the purposes of this game, but
I don't think she ever mentioned Mississippi.

Wow this is great stuff. Is this lot closed? Is it possible get a tour or
just walk around? I'm going to be in L.A. in February, and was hoping maybe
to visit Myers' Lake, etc.

Sadly, the Mayberry back lot was bulldozed about 30 years ago. The lake is
still there, though. That's about the closest we can get to actually
visiting Mayberry.

The web site mentioned above is GREAT! Everybody should check it out. It's
super, man!

As a regular TVLand and Nick at Nite
viewer, it's great finding out
people who were on TAGS are on
other shows.

For YEARS I've watched "All in the Family",
and for YEARS I've watched TAGS Episode#95,
"The Big House", and never noticed until last night,
that one of the prisoners "Tiny" (Billy Hallop) was
the same actor as the guy who let Archie Bunker
"moonlight" by using his cab, Mr. Munsen.

Billy Hallop has a distinct voice,
and during "The Big House", I heard it.
It indeed was the same guy!

Maybe Ol' Barn rehabilitated "Tiny", and
he went to "Cabby School" and learned a trade.
Ol' Barn is truly magical !

I have had a very rough couple of days, and I want all
of you to know one of the best remedies I have found
to get me through those days was TAGS. Here in
Cincinnati we get TAGS from 11-12PM, and it has truly
been a calm in the storm for me. I sit back, relax,
and just enjoy being with Andy, Barney and the whole
gang in Mayberry. Of course my troubles just seem to
slip away for awhile. After a couple of episodes of
TAGS I am more able to cope with what life thows at
me. Anyone else have times like this?

I guess there were so many singles featured in Mayberry because it was a lot
less compliated than being married. For instance, on the married side, Fred
& Jenny Boone showed "affection" for each other by screaming, yelling, and
throwing stuff at each other (ahhh Love) - Otis & Rita Campbell were not
exactly an ideal couple. How about Tom & Annabelle Silbey (he ran away).
The "blonde from a bottle" was married to a control freak, How would you
like to be around Ollie & Nora (Bee's baby sister) for any length of time?
The only couples I can remember that seemed functional were that rich couple
who had meatloaf for supper, Rafe Hollister and his wife, and the couple
that Ben Weaver wanted to evict. More singles were Ernest T. Bass, Malcolm
Merriwether, Jerry Miller, the Morrison sisters, Mavis Neff, Peggy
McMillan, Frank Myers, Jeff Pruitt (but he was "looking"), Newton Monroe,
and Cousin Virgil (bless his heart).
Goober Linda - Bless MY heart - I've been married to the same "Nut" for 41
years.

Subject: Comics characters in Mayberry
Date: Mon, 7 Jan 2002 15:33:15 -0800

Re the recent question about comic-book super-heroes mentioned in Mayberry:

The most famous and frequent reference is to Captain Marvel, through Gomer's
utterance of "Shazam!" "Shazam!" is the magic word Billy Batson used to
magically transform himself into the World's Mightiest Mortal. And Gomer did
mention Cap himself in "The Great Filling Station Robbery," when, in
response to Barney's "genius" rigging of a hidden survellience camera, Gomer
exclaimed, "Captain Marvel wouldn't even'a thought of that!"

The only other super-hero that was mentioned was Crab-Monster, a fictitious
character that was a favorite of Goober's.

Let's not forget that Opie, Opie's cousins, and Goober were depicted reading
comics in various episodes.

Incidentally, two cast members from the "Batman" theatrical movies made
appearances in color episodes of TAGS: Pat Hingle, Gotham City's
Commissioner Gordon, was Clarence Earp's promoter in the "Wyatt Earp"
episode, and the Joker himself, Jack Nicholson, guest starred in "Opie Finds
a Baby" and "Aunt Bee the Juror."

And come to "thank" of it, when trouble rears its head in Mayberry, Andy and
his wiry sidekick Barney streak into action in their sleek patrol car, just
like Gotham City's Batman and Robin in their Batmobile!!

Holy similarities, Batman! I mean, Andy!

Unfortunately, the entire back lot was destroyed in the mid-70's and is now
a business/industrial area. One of the last (if not the very last) movies
filmed on the "Mayberry" set was "Switchblade Sisters" in 1975 which is
available on DVD. I purchased this disc for one last look at "Mayberry" and
towards the end of the movie the teenage gangs "have it out" on Mayberry's
main street between the courthouse and the cinema. The facades of the
buildings were in very poor repair with graffiti sprayed on most of them,
the cinema was gone with only the concrete pad remaining, and the columns
on the courthouse were decaying and about ready to fall. A very sad way to
say goodbye to a back lot icon. One can only imagine the potential for
tours if forty acres could have remained the way it was in the 60's with
Mayberry, Stalag 13 from "Hogan's Heroes", the marine base from "Gomer
Pyle, USMC", and the train station from "Gone With the Wind" to visit.

Just think a group named after a moonshiner from TAGS. I never heard of
the group
until I saw this in the newspaper. I don't know if they are good or bad.

  By: Craig Havighusrt

Jubal Foster, a Nashville alt-country group named for a farmer/moonshiner on
The Andy Griffith Show, has grass stains on its blue jeans but likes to sock
you with a backbeat as well. The group leans heavily on well-written songs
by
friends and some covers of war horses such as I Know You Rider, but the
originals that are here (Saving Up for a Cadillac especially) show a lot of
  promise.

Cuts such as Mark W. Winchester's Nothin' Helps are extremely infectious.
The
band is strong live and just got signed to Western Beat Entertainment, so
perhaps they're poised for a big year.
