>>I hadn't thought of it before, but the idea that there just might not
have been any blacks there is a good one.<<

Three scenes with black people in Mayberry come to mind:
1) the Army recruiting scenes inside and outside showed a black male
joining up.
2) crowd scene shows an African-American woman several times in the
episode, (I believe) where Barney captures the escaped convict.
3)a crowd scene shows an elderly black man in another episode, the name
of the episode escapes me.

There may be more, but not being a trained noticer, I may have missed
them.

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

"Big Mac" in Fulda Germany answers:

The currently available TAGS DVDs-- they cost $5.95 in the PX,
here-- have what you USUALLY get on budget videos... bare minimum.

The entire FIRST SEASON of M*A*S*H (24-shows) costs $39 on DVD--
one of Columbia Houses' FORMERLY available tapes, but...

Columbia House offers DVDs of their "complete" or nearly complete
"COLLECTORs' Editions" only.

All of TAGS would fit on SIXTY-THREE (63!) tapes --TWILIGHT ZONE is
on 43-- currently there's only 17 for TAGS.

I urge A-L-L O-F U-S to buy those Columbia House tapes! We need
those missing moments from TV-Land's studio floor, that're ONLY seen
by those of us with digitally-restored Columbia House tapes!

As for your snide remark on Betamax-- a SUPERIOR to VHS format-- a
great deal of people have VHS-players... and always will. Used to be
the "average" price of a "store-bought" video tape was $19.99[SRP].
Now, at least in the PX, it is $13-- and less. Competition is GOOD!

I've heard as soon as HD-TV catches on-- another seven years or so--
the DVD-player you have will be as archaic as my LD-player.
What's a LD-player?
THAT's why I bought a LASER-disc player that plays ALL of the various
disc formats...4="; 8"; 12". My machine plays CDs, DVDs, LDs... and
will continue to because the NEXT-Generation of DVD-player that has
a horizontal-resolution DOUBLE that of the 657 lines I get on my
German (PAL system) TV will force YOU to throw away a CHEAPER machine
than the $1200 PIONEER machine I'll KEEP because of my LASERDISCS.

I'm getting long-winded here, but what I'm TRYING to say is:
"Wait for a NEWER/BETTER/FASTER ________ (fill in the blank)
but BUY those "Andy-Tapes" NOW! You will NEVER get TAGS any
better (at ANY price), anywhere than Columbia House. Do it!

'preciate it, 'n' g'night,
"Big Mac"

P.S. I just re-read all of the above. Makes you HUNGER for
SIMPLER times, now, don't it? No wonder we'd all love to
get off that train at Willoughby... or Mayberry.
Bye Now!

Subject: Answers to the 3 ?'s & Barney's misfires
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello everyone, well a few responded to the questions, and did very well on
the answers.

   1. The references to the date that Barney joined the force that I have:
Aug, 1953, and also the month and year weren't given but the 15th of May.
These are two that I have caught.

   2. Barney's shoe size is: 7 1/2 B.. Small feet must be a family trait.
Their are wiery you know.

   3. And yes a 42-J is a character report.

I hope this can turn into a fun thing for all the members, and I like
comparing my knowlege, with other WBMWTBB members.

In responce to the question of Barney's misfires, another one is at the
end of the show where Andy's date with Thelma Lou's cousin Karen. In the
trailer of the episode, Karen shoots a hand gun and hits all the bottles.
When Barney sets up
to do his quick draw he misfires and shoots into the ground.

Now here's 3 more questions:
  1. What occasion did Barney and Thelma Lou meet at ?

  2. What requires Barney or Andy to be alert at all times ?.

  3. How long did Floyd serve on the city counsel.
Have fun with these and I'll post the answers in a couple of days.

Subject: Firing of Barney's Gun

I believe there was another incident....on an early episode when Andy is
trying to impress Thelma Lou's cousin (Karen I think). The cousin turns
out to be an ace shooter and Andy learns to eat a little crow. But at the
end of that episode they ask Barney to shoot and the gun goes off into the
ground before he can get the gun out of his holster.

I think someone asked about who made "gollywobblers" in an earlier digest. I
don't think I've seen an answer posted yet. Is this in reference to the hobo
Dave Brown that "lures" Opie to his way of living by his wit? We used this
episode for a Sunday School lesson once.

hey to all. just wanted to comment on the difference in the southern accents.
i'm sure that north carolina has their own way of talking just like we do
here in texas. we may be from texas but the my east texas accent is not the
same as someone from north texas. i was told the other day that i had a very
heavy accent. this was from someone up north and i told her, excuse me, but
i'm from texas. just can't help myself. and goober linda is right. hollywood
does make a mess with some of it. although i think mayberry accents are just
right. but in our part of the country we don't have dogs, we have dawgs. just
a little east texas english lesson. i'll bet miss crump would not approve and
i would probably not only get a rude but an "F" on my report card. this is bec
from texas. "i'm always gittin my britches caught on my own pitch fork."

they discuss their honeymoon. Millie wants to go to Las Vegas and Howard

I was watching a movie called "The Blue Bird" with Shirley Temple, 1940.
Not one of Shirley's best.
In the forest scene, I heard a very familiar voice, it was none other than
Sterling Holloway.
Mr. Holloway played a character named Wild Plum.
I would rather see him as Bert Miller or my favorite "Winnie the Pooh".

If I remember correctly Buddy Ebsen played 'David Browne', the man who made
gollywobbler's.
Isn't this the episode that Andy wanted Mr. Browne to leave town so that
the boy's wouldn't idolize
his lifestyle as a bum. Stealing from the rich and giving to the poor,
like Robin Hood.

I'm listening to the radio at work WSIX, they are playing the group "JUBAL
FOSTER".
The group was live in the studio tonight, they sound a little bit
country/bluegrass, I like that kind of music.
The boys in the band are from North Carolina. One of the guys in the band
said his wife called
and said that the episode on TV tonight was the one with Jubal Foster in
it, "Keeper of the Flame".
They think that is a good omen for them.

In today's "The Tennessean" newspaper there is an article about a small
town mayor.

The first line in the article says "He's Andy Griffith with a PalmPilot."
The Mayor Shane Ray, 30, of Pleasant View, Tennessee. He is also the chief
of the volunteer fire
department in Pleasant View. The mayor is also a fire-fighter in a suburb
of Nashville.
He wants the town to be able to grow and stay small at the same time.
"We need to be able to say hi to our neighbors instead of living here 10
years and not
knowing anybody," Ray said. "What's wrong with the Mayberrys and 'Leave it
to Beavers' ?"

The article was written by: Kelli Samantha Hewett.

I just love it when Mayberry or Andy Griffith is mentioned in an article.
