The other day I posted a message telling how I'd heard a recording of
Andy doing his "Romeo and Juliet" routine on NPR. I wondered if there were
any copies of something like that available anywhere. The very next day a
fellow emailed me to say he had a cassette tape of a number of Andy's old
routines and would be happy to send me a copy. He refused any offer of
payment, saying he was glad to help another TAGS fan. Is that great or what !
I will spare this guy a deluge of emails by not giving out his name. He
can reveal himself if he wants to. I just want to say thanks again to him
and thanks to y'all for keeping the WBMUTBB digest so enjoyable. It's the
first thing I read each morning.

>>>In the first TAGS episode Aunt Bee mentions that she has raised her
family & is now lonely for someone
to help. Now, I always thought she was a widow. Any info from other sources?
Also, I assumed from the context of several episodes that Floyd was a
widower.

Actually Aunt Bee says "...all those young'uns I raised -- they're all grown
up now." She doesn't say they were her own children. We learn in that same
episode that she raised Andy (perhaps his mother died young, like Opie's)
and probably other nieces or nephews as well. She MIGHT be a widow with a
deceased husband nobody ever talks about, but we never learn that for
certain.

Floyd has a wife and at least two kids early on (see "Quiet Sam," "Those
Gossipin' Men" and "The Jinx.") By the time "The Bookie Barber" and "Floyd
the Gay Deceiver" roll around (late second / early third season) he's a
widower. No contradiction there, but it might seem like one if you see the
episodes out of order.

Subject: Gomer's Mechanical Expertise?
Date: Thu, 24 Jan 2002 14:16:05 +0000

Has anyone ever noticed the difference in Gomer's mechanical expertise?
Mostly, Gomer is portrayed as inept when it come to anything mechanical, but
when it comes to "gas and air," that is a different situation entirely. In
"Man in a Hurry", Mr Tucker is appalled when GOmer cannot fix his car,
although Gomer insists that when it comes to low tires and an empty gas
tank, he is the man for the job. However, in another episode when Wally
fires Gomer for being "insufficient in his duties" (it came before the
firing), we find out that Gomer is a magician when it comes to fixing cars.
In fact, Andy exclaims to Wally: "That's more than Gomer; that's YOUR
BUSINESS!"
I thought that was interesting!

Some of my all time favorite moments on the show are Barney talking to
Juanita, and I think that one ("Cock-a-doodle-doo! Heh-heh, yeah, I just
made that up") is my favorite. Classic example of how some guys can get up a
lot more bravado when they're on the phone with women, than looking them in
the face. And don't you just love it when Barney gets busted by Andy? ("I
just want to see if there are any eggs under there!")

Subject: Short quotes trivia

I thought it might be fun to read through this little trivia game and
see how you do--I'm not asking you to post your answers, just read it
and see how much you can remember.

The object is to read the quote and see if you can recall where it was
used, even if you can't remember the episode. Some are easy, and some
will be recognized only if you are a 'trained observer.'

1. "Five."
2. "*I* didn't!"
3. "Wrong! Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong!"
4. "Oh no...he shot a station wagon!"
5. "You can't come back. Not after you're...*gone*..."
6. "Hallelujah."
7. "I like TV dinners."
8. "No you don't." (#7 and #8 go together)
9. "Un. Duh. Twah." (I used the phonetic spelling.)
10. "Andy, it's time, it's time."
11. "But you hit her mother."
12. "Thelma, Andy Lou's here!"
13. "I hate the guitar."
14. "Your hair's drippin'."
15. "Wretch! Miserable, deceitful wretch!"
16. "DICK! You forgot Pansy!"
17. "I'll make him a deputy." -- "A DEPUTY?!?"
18. "Where do you keep the loup sadle?"
19. "You know, my valoose."
20. "My heart just ain't in this." -- "Well, it ain't your heart that we
need so much, it's your stomach."
21. "Blooie!"

Now, those may not be word for word correct, but they're pretty close.
I love the fact that this show was so very well written that you can
hear one or two words and immediately place the situation where they
were said (usually).

I've never seen this mentioned before on the digest,
so if it has ya'll will just have to give me a rude,
and forgive me.

I was recently told that the actress (Mabel Albertson)
who played the part of Howard's mother Mrs. Sprague,
is also Jack Albertson's real life sister! He was on
TAGS as Aunt Bee's Uncle Bradford Taylor; he was a big
dreamer who wanted to make Aunt Bee's homemade ice
cream a national product. He also was on "Chico and
the Man", and he starred in "Willy Wonka and the
Chocolate Factory". Has anyone else ever read or
heard that the two actors were related in real life?
My sister's boyfriend told me he heard it on the cable
station: "Biography".

....and take that gun outta your mouth.....

Here's an eBay link to an album that Jack Prince did with Andy while
starring in the Broadway play Destry Rides Again.

I was watching The Matlock Movie "The Heist" this afternoon and couldnt help
but notice some TAGS influence. Ben's friend Billy was heading up the stairs
after a date singing N-I-T-A JUUUUAAANITA! I had to chuckle. Its almost like
in inside joke just for TAGS fans. There was also a scene were Billy's date
told him he was the cat's meow. It seems like I remember Barney using this
line (dont be to hard on me if I am wrong).
Hope you all have a great weekend!!

Yes...yes...yes...Congratulations to Ron Howard for a Beautiful Mind. I
watch and enjoy all his movies just because I love everything he does. I
too, was disappointed that he didn't win the best director Golden Globe...I
hope he wins an Oscar. Also, I haven't heard anything about Andy Griffith in
a long, long time. I know he had been sick. Does anyone know how he is
doing? Cathy

Subject: Aunt Bee and Floyd

The show never mentions Aunt Bee having been married. I think the
reference to her not having any more children to raise meant that she had
spent her life raising other people's children and they were now all
grown. We know that she raised Andy at least from the time he was 6
years old. I would think that if she had been married, her last name
would not be Taylor, which it is. Her name is mentioned in several
episodes as Bee Taylor. It seems to me that there may have been a
reference to her bachelorette status somewhere, but I am not sure.
However, for someone who never married, she certainly was popular with
the men even into middle age and beyond. She had at least 5 suitors on
the show - the man who sprayed the roses, Mr. Goss at the cleaners, Roger
Hanover, Senator Canfield, and the man who gave the speech about South
America. With that many male admirers in her late 50's and early 60's,
she must have had lots of boyfriend! s when she was younger. I guess she
never married because she was so devoted to raising Andy and those other
children.------------------As for Floyd, in the episode "Quiet Sam", he
is married. In the episode "Floyd, the Gay Deceiver", he is a widower.
In the episode, "Andy and Opie Bachelors", Floyd is giving Andy advice
about Peggy and Andy asks him what could he possibly know about love.
Floyd says "You can't cut hair for 30 years and not know something about
love." It seems like that would indicate Floyd had never been married
since he was perceived as not knowing about love, but if he was never
married, there must have been a scandal in Mayberry since he is shown
with a son in the episode "Those Gossipin' Men" and another son is
mentioned in "The Jinx". Personally, I think he was married at the
beginning of the series, but his wife passed away at some point before
"Floyd, the Gay Deceiver". Why he would not know anything about love, I
am not sure, unless maybe his marriage was an arranged one, or maybe it
had been so long since he was a young bachelor that Andy assu! med he
must have forgotten anything he might have known on the subject. ---------Mary
Grace Gossage---------"...and the next thing you know you're out changing
the card on your mailbox to read 'Mr. and Mrs. Andy Taylor'."
