Because his wife barely lets him in the house, as he indicated in the famous
"Dogs, Dogs, Dogs" episode. Probably trying to keep his marriage intact,
though yes, I know not drinking would have worked better.

Unfortunately, this scene (one of Mari Ellen Ryan's favorite) has been
"snipped" from the TV Land episode. As our family was watching this episode
earlier this week, I was providing a running commentary of gems to watch for
(as I usually do, because I don't want my wife and daughter to miss anything).
As I prepared them for Barney's return through the Taylor's front door with
that unforgettable glare on his face, that scene disappeared before our very
eyes.
That's life....through and through!

Ben Weaver was originally played by longtime veteran character actor Will
Wright. He was superb in the role and his last appearance as Ben Weaver was
in the episode of March 5, 1962 "The Merchant of Mayberry". The reason Will
did not return to the role thereafter is because, sadly, he passed away on
June 19, 1962 in Hollywood of Cancer.
Following Will Wright, the role was assumed by Tol Avery (The Shoplifters)
and Jason Johnson in the 1966 episode "Goober's Replacement".
Also, did you ever wonder why Dick Elliott never returned as "Mayor Pike"
after the episode "The Manicurist"? Well, Dick Elliott passed away December
22, 1961 just after the filming of this episode. It actually aired a month to
the day after Elliott passed, shown on January 22, 1962. Elliott was actually
slated to be in the episode "THE JINX" but filming was not completed before
his death. Did you know that Elliott was also in the 1946 Christmas Classic
"It's A Wonderful Life?" He played the man on the porch that told Jimmy
Stewart to go on and kiss Donna Reed... his role was uncredited. Also, 12
years after his death, his likeness was used as the "Fake Judge" in SUPERMAN
from 1973.
Best of Mayberry,
Jason

What is a white elephant sale?
(in the beauty pageant episode)
///////////////////////////////
"Big Mac" puts in his two-cent's
worth:
Back in the "old country"-- as
Andy'd say-- it was custom to
give a sacred animal to someone
you wished to "honor."
In one country it was a white buf-
falo (ours), in asia it was an
actual white ELEPHANT...
Now, mind ya, it WAS an honor, but
you COULDN'T E-A-T the buffalo...
couldn't use the elephant for work,
so the "gifts" become burdens that
were quickly sold (cheap!) or just
given away.
Mind ya, this isn't a BOOK answer,
I found this out when I was in Bang-
kok, Thailand-- which I probably
spelled wrong-- but I DID it, didn't
READ it!
I have a few white elephants in the
cellar wanna have a look?
Gotta get in the car and head north--
to Holland.
Have a nice weekend!

Hey all,
I have to add one of my favorite facial expressions of Barney. In the episode
titled "Citizens Arrest", right toward the end when Barney and Andy show up at
the filling station and Gomer says he faked it. Andy tells Barney that Gomer
turned in a false alarm. The look on Barney's face when he says "and you
think it's funny?" one in a million, I laugh out loud everytime.
I have to say to Mr. Sizemore, very good, wasn't he too the Gentlman crook as
well? I think so.
God Bless
Michael

On "The Andy Griffith Show" the newspaper which is generally referenced
is "The Mayberry Gazette."
But since I grew up with Andy in Mount Airy, North Carolina, I always
notice when, as in Episode #154, "Aunt Bee's Beau," Andy pays tribute to
his real hometown roots when he is seen reading "The Mount Airy News."
"The Mount Airy News," established in 1880, carried all the news as Andy
was growing up and, later saluted him with a pictorial in the mid -1950s
when he returned for the premier of his much acclaimed dramatic role in "A
Face In The Crowd."
For other interesting background information on how Andy's hometown
influenced the development of "Mayberry" check out my new book and website:

After many hours and eating pretzels that lay
on my chest, I updated my homepage:
www.jasonray.cjb.net
It's chocked full of new pictures, and you got to
check out the "News" section, for a story about
me doing my best "Otis Campbell" act.
Also, Me being who I am, and who I know,
how would "Mayberry Rasslin' Federation" sound
during "Mayberry Days". How would I go about doing this?
I can even have the descendant of Wyatt Earp throw Goober around.

I've got another question that everyone but me probably knows: What is a
white elephant sale?
(in the beauty pageant episode)
If I'm not mistaken, Isn't it what we refer to as a yard sale today?

I'll bet Ange took the Mt. Pilot or Raleigh paper. Another small town to
recommend is Abbeville, SC, where they filmed "Sleeping with the
Enemy." We visited there once and it is charming and very historical
with a lovely town square.

I had a great opportunity to use a TAGS line today. A friend of mine said she
was fixing a leg of lamb for supper tonight. I immediately started laughing
and said "All they understand is a leg of lamb". I love that line and a chance
to say it doesn't come around often! Fortunately, my friend likes TAGS, too,
and so she understood the line and didn't look at me like I was crazy, which is
exactly what happens most of the time! :)

Well, in my opinion Dan, A pre-stroke Howard McNear coudn't have done it
any better. This was pure Floyd and it was perfect!

Subject: a TAGS "hearing"
Many of you send in your TAGS sightings, but I had a "hearing" last night
as I watched the ladies' figure skating competition at the Olympics. A
young lady from Canada skated to the lovely anthem that the ladies of the
All Souls church choir sang at the beginning of the "Church Benefactors"
episode. I don't know the title, but perhaps someone can remind me.
Hearing it again was, as Rev. Tucker said, "very inspirational."
