>>>Bee says something like "does he still split his shoes?". Clara says

Some folks would cut slits in their shoes if they were too tight. It was
cheaper than buying a new pair. Perhaps Clark Cooper was in the habit of
buying the cheapest shoes he could find, even if they were the wrong size.
I think Aunt Bee was implying that Clara's boyfriend was a cheapskate.
In one of Andy's old comedy routines, he talks about a fellow who bought new
shoes for $3.25 (pronounced "three dollars and a quarter"), but the left one
was causing him to limp. The guy was reluctant to cut his "expensive"
shoes, but eventually cut a hole right where the sore spot was, and then
later declared "I wouldn't have took three dollars and a quarter for that
hole."

I think I just saw "Blue" from "Barney's Bloodhound" in an episode of the
Beverly Hillbillies. Has
anyone else seen "Blue" in another show?

That's nothing...there was a "Barney Miller" episode once in which Jack
Dodson played a man who was arrested for (gasp!) killing his barber!

Speaking of hilarious facial expressions, what about when Barney goes
undercover in his own jail to get info out of the captured gang member. When
asked his name Barn answers "Puddin-tame, ask me again, I'll tell ya the
same." I can't help cracking up at that cocky look he gets on his face.
I forget the name of that episode but Barney's cell-mate is also Barney
Hefner on All in the Family.

While watching this episode, during the part where
Clara is telling Bee about her "beau" Clark, Bee says
something like "does he still split his shoes?".
Clara says that she never noticed. Is this a
reference to him being poor or cheap? Was this
something they did during the depression, in order to
not have to buy new shoes? This is the first time I
ever noticed Bee saying that. Curious...Curious....

she actually asked if he still cuts slits in his shoes.
Andy referred to that on one of his comedy skits before
TAGS. It does have to do with trying to extend the life
of a pair of shoes.

<But I think they used the "Andy attacking Barney with a ruler" bit almost
unchanged.>
They also do that same bit on an episode of Matlock.

Hey Dan and everybody,
Dan, I was watching Matlock the other day, an episode with Don Knotts, Don
asked Andy to try to attack him with a ruler. Don was forced to the floor
and it was almost the same seen that appears on TAGS. Don even said the
same kind of "let me up" line he said on TAGS.
I wonder if this was a favorite scene of the two actors.

Hey Jason,
Phil Sunkel was the trumpet player in Bobby Fleet's band when they played
for the Mayor in "The Mayberry Band." Andy commented on his furbelows and
Phil was influencing Barney's vernacular - "Gas it up, chickie!"
I don't recall which book I read this in, but from what I remember, Phil
Sunkel was a friend of Aneta Coursaut and he didn't appreciate his name
being used on the show aTALL.
If anyone can add to the story - a source or correct details, I'd appreciate
it.

Dear folks I am new at this, I've been a member for a short while now. All I
can say is : you can't do any better than Ange and ole Barn! They are just
the best, I'd hate to say it but the color ones just don't have the same
spirit. I've loved the show since I was a kid too bad everyone else thinks
I'm crazy. Although those same people end up watching it and loving it!
Here's to Mayberry! Long may it live!!!
