He also appeared as Gomer's grandpa Pyle on "Gomer Pyle USMC." Very nice
casting since "Lum and Abner" is said to have heavily influenced TAGS with
its laid back, rural theme and style.

...what about Barney, or does that count? Not only did he accidentally lock
himself in repeatedly, but in one episode he jails himself out of principle
over Gomer's citizens arrest on the U-turn violation, and another he goes
undercover ("one thing they never call me...tattletale!").
I thought of one other time for Aunt Bee...when she and the ladies' church
aid committee gets crocked and Andy and Barney sober the whole bunch of 'em
up.

Let me at least say this for Return to Mayberry: not only is it funny and
nostalgic, but it does do a good job of recapturing the original series'
spirit. And don't just take my word for it: in his movie guide, highly
respected film critic Leonard Maltin reviews it favorably, not saying a
single unkind word about it and giving it a rating of "above average" (the
highest he gives to a TV-movie).

Thanks to Crystal M. for straightening out my furbelows.
Is it just me or does that guy (the furbelow guy, whom Ange tells to
"Andy Gump" his chin) seem like he's barely keeping a straight face? I'll
bet they had to film that scene a few times before they got it right, because
he kept laughing.

On this topic, have you noticed at the end of "return" they slipped in a
quick shot of a fake Floyd! It only lasts about 1 second. I think the
problem was the way they presented this movie. As with all classics, when
you try to recreate them, there are 2 ways to go with the presentation. You
can recycle jokes and lines or you can write new material in the spirit of
the old characters. "return" was never quite sure about which way to go. It
is tempting to just present things as they were, but the actors are
unfortunately older.
I would write another Mayberry Reunion movie like this:
Show the town of Mayberry as it would be under normal development 40+years
later. Many of the original characters would still be present- but they
would be retired, etc. If you still featured them as main characters the
fans should be pleased. Being that Mayberry is a small town, many of the
same values would still be in place. Imagine Jack Burns (Warren) as the new
mayor walking by Andy and Barney playing checkers on the steps of the hotel.
How about Goober and Gomer on the town council? Opie as Sheriff? Ellie
Walker running the boarding house? Ernest T as the new owner of the
Hollister farm.
With strong characters in place, you could bring new characters on while
keeping the spirit of the show true.
Just Imagine! (sorry Ron)

I really enjoyed"Return To Mayberry"I did not think it was that bad of a
reunion movie.I still get teary eyed when I watch the start of the movie where
Andy is pulling in to Mayberry & the theme song is playing.I will admit that
the fake monster in the lake was a bit lame. What I did enjoy was seeing Barney
& Thelma Lou finally getting together.Near the end of the movie is pretty
entertaining when the Darlings get together with the townfolk of Mayberry.Just
my opinion!

Hello everyone .. I thoroughly enjoyed the interview with Ron Howard on CBS
Sunday Morning today. They showed a lot of clips of his early film and TV
career, including shots of him with Andy Griffith. It occurred to me during
the comments, that Ron, at 49 years old, sounds a lot like Sheriff Taylor
during the show. What I mean is that he has a down to earth philosophy and
he's doing what he loves to do, and doesn't let the rest of the world's
opinion make much of a difference.
Now let's just hope he wins the Oscar and gets the recognition we've always
known that he deserves!

Hey Everybody,
I have to disagree with the statement that "Return to Mayberry was a
disgrace to TAGS". It wasn't as good as the original episodes and I
believe that the monster in the lake was kooky, but seeing Thelma Lou and
Barney finally getting married was worth it all and seeing the original
cast on there was great. Also, Andy and Helen coming back to live in
Mayberry and seeing Andy and Barn being sheriff and deputy sheriff again
brought back great memories for me as a little kid watching the show. I
cry everytime that I see Andy making the speech at Barney and Thelma
Lou's wedding reception in the barn at the end of the show. Also, hearing
the Mayberry theme song being played while the credits are going through
while Barney and Ange are taking down the flag at the end of the day is
also great for me. Maybe Return to Mayberry failed to meet everybody's
expectations, but I wouldn't trade my Return to Mayberry video for
anything. It was good to see Otis on the "Ice Cream Wagon" also.<! /P>

There has been some mention lately about Howard
McNear's stroke and his appearance in the episode of
Goober taking apart Gilley's car in the Courthouse.
It has been said that McNear had suffered his stroke
just before this episode was filmed, and how great a
job he did considering his condition. My local
televison station broadcasts TAGS and I believe they
are showing them in some semblance of order, and now
the color episodes are getting their turn. In the
first few color episodes Floyd is shown definitely
standing, and his speech definitely is not slowed.
Since it is a given that the color episodes were
filmed AFTER the B&W ones, is it possible that the
date of McNear's stroke occurred later than what has
been generally accepted?

When opie found the purse (which later was claimed by Parnell Rigsbee, Rt.
1, Bannertown), did Andy, barn and Opie not watch the clock count down to 3
p.m. a week later so that Opie could rightfully claim the money? Just a
thought.
"Bobby Fleet and His Band With a Beat" were in the jail at least once, to
hear Jim Lindsey, and maybe a second time when they helped the town band go
to Raleigh. That was the epiosode where Andy told the band member to "Andy
Gump" his chin to hide his goatee.
Lots of luck to you and yours.

The Angelus was painted around 1858-59 by Jean-Francois Millet (1814-1875).
Born in the Normandy region of France, the son of a peasant farmer. I think
his rural scenes were painted from memories of childhood in Normandy. I don't
think he ever came to Nebraska.

More clock appearances in Mayberry:
In "The New Mayor," Andy, Barney and Mayor Stoner are watching the clock
behind the desk when Jess (forgot his last name) is late getting back
from his "time off" to bring in his crops.
And in "The Perfect Female," Barney keeps checking the clock so he can
get Andy to the diner in time to meet Thelma Lou's cousin.
Andy: "Don't you feel good after you've been working?" Opie: "Yeah, good
and tired!"

I respect everyones opinion on Andy Griffith and Mayberry but I
strongly disagree with your view of the renunion movie and had to reply.
What I feel is important to remember is the spirit, subject, people and
love this movie was inspired from and contains. Yes, I love the black
and whites, but the color episodes and the movie also contain wonderful
values and morals that make them great in their own right. To say that
the movie is a disgrace, in my opinion, shows to me a lack of
understanding on your part of what the movie represents. Watch the movie
again, and look a little deeper. You may discover something
wonderful! Steve

I saw a clock in the Taylor's kitchen on the wall next to the cupboard.
Barney kept looking at it when Aunt Bee was on the phone and he was waiting
for a call from the Esquire Club. Did I really see this clock? I think so
but I am subject to hallucinations from time to time.
Speaking of phones - isn't it odd that the Taylors had at least 3 phones in
the house. This was during a time when a person was lucky to have one phone
and be on a party line to boot. I think it's funny that the kitchen phone
was about 4 steps from the phone by the sofa. That's Hollywood for ya.
There should have been a CELL phone in Otis's "Room".

Subject: The WBMUTBB Rules
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Whoa boy.....we broke a rule this weekend.
I feel like with the number of new members we've gotten lately that it's time
to re-state "The Rules" for everybody. You old-timers might want to read
through this just to refresh your memories and I think it's good for all of
us to try and remember these tried and true rules.---- Allan
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hey Everybody,
Boy, things have really been growing here in out little corner of Mayberry!!
Because of that I think it's time to remind everyone what WBMUTBB is all
about:
We all know what Mayberry is about but do we realize why it is that we all
visit there everyday? I know that the characters are great but more than
that, they're friends. We "know" these people and it's just a joy to visit
them every chance we get to watch them as they work their way through getting
locked in a cell because the door "clangs shut" or any of the other wonderful
situations they face. Things always work out in a wonderful way leaving a
smile on our faces.
Mayberry is an escape from the day-to-day trials we all face. A short trip
to a place where every body cares about one another and where we can forget,
for a while, the fact that "real life" isn't as much like that as we'd like.
I started WBMUTBB back in 1990, along with several other good folks, and
since then I've tried to make it as much like a "corner of Mayberry" as
possible. I wanted this place to be somewhere folks could go and forget
about the outside world and relax by reading about Andy, Barney, Opie, Aunt
Bee, and the rest of our Mayberry family.
To try and make that happen I've required everyone who wanted to join to tell
us a little about themselves so we could get to know them just a little bit.
After all, in Mayberry everyone knew everybody else and how can we have a
community without having at least some idea about our neighbors?
I've also had a couple of rules here and I try to enforce them.
Of course Rule #1 is...you guessed it...Obey all rules.
Rule #2 is this: Talk about the things you like about Mayberry..not things
you don't like.
I know some folks forget this second rule sometimes and they don't really
understand WHY I think Rule #2 is important so let me just give you an
example. Let's say I were to say, "Boy, I really hate Barney. I mean, look
how stupid he is and poor Andy has to put up with him." If I said that
(and meant it) what are the first things that happen to you?
First you'd feel like, "Man, that guys a jerk!" Then you'd get aggravated at
this guy talking about your Favorite character (and friend), Barney Fife.
Even if Barney's not your very favorite character, you'd likely be upset
about this guy talking about your neighbor.
I've never heard anyone say anything like that about Barn but I have about
other characters and folks forget that just because they don't like a
particular character doesn't mean that character isn't someone elses
favorite. You see, if I talk about your favorite character saying negative
things about 'em it takes your fun away.
I think that's enough about Rule #2 and I hope you all understand the rule.
It's not to take away from your fun but to encourage you all to tell us about
what's fun to you and share your good feelings with others.
We have something special here. It's something you don't find often on the
internet. No "flames", no "fighting", no "foul language." We have a place
that children and adults can come and enjoy themselves.
Mayberry is a wonderful place and I'm just glad to be a part of this little
corner of it.
Your Friend and neighbor,
Allan Newsome
