Hey all,
I couldn't help but want to send this in after I got it from A Word a Day
(AWAD). I subscribe to AWAD and this was the word for Mach 4. And the word
is ....
philomath (FIL-uh-math) noun
A lover of learning.
[From Greek philomaths (fond of learning), from philo- (loving) + math-
root of manthanein (to learn).]
So that is where the Philomathean Literary Society derived it's name.
And Jack Eggbert was no prize ya know!!!

been in the Mayberry jail the most times. What character is second, though?
Have you all forgotten Ernest T. Bass? He's definitely in the top three,
along with Otis and Barney.

As far as I can recollect, Barney was the character
who was in the jail the most besides Otis. Someone
else may have another one in mind.
....and take that gun outta your mouth....

I just want to say thank you to Allan for restating
the 2 rules of the digest. I have my favorites like
everyone else, but it hurts me to see anyone make
unkind statements about anyone from Mayberry. I get
such a thrill reading all the comments by everyone
especially the "trained noticers". You help me see so
much more about my favorite show.
Thanks,
Anita Carpenter

Yes, I think it did only last one issue. But I think Barney said that it was
above everyone's heads and that is why it didn't last!
About the Return to Mayberry movie...wasn't Ernest T. and someone else involved
in that sea monster scam? Anything Ernest T. is involved in has to be crazy!
(And I mean that in the kindest way possible, 'cause Ernest T. is one of my
favorites!)
I don't care if I'm watching a black and white TAGS, a TAGS in color, or a
reunion movie - Mayberry and its citizens can always give me something to laugh
about and something to feel good about. I grew up in a small town not too
different from Mayberry, and it is so nice to watch a show about a small town
where everyone cares about one another, and to laugh at the situations they get
in, and to know that everything turns out great in the end, and to know that it
is always, always family friendly! :)

Hey Everybody,
Overall I loved Return to Mayberry and I said before, that I would not
trade my Return to Mayberry video for anything. I remember very little
about Mayberry RFD. Wasn't Ken Berry the main character and his son Mike?
I know that alot of the TAGS characters were in Mayberry RFD also,
correct? How can I get some Mayberry RFD videos or are any available?
Bottom-line is this! If it is Mayberry from B&W to colored episodes to
Mayberry RFD or Return to Mayberry then it is gooooooooood! I guess I had
better go because it is 3:00 pm and that is TAGS time at my house.

Subject: Mass Transit in Mayberry???
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello Friends,
A few nights ago on TV Land, during the episode with the return of the
Fun Girls, I noticed something strange. When Andy and Barney caught up to the
speeding girls, they were on a street I have never before seen in Mayberry.
Not only was there a hot dog stand and "Palmerton Cafe" in the background,
but there were very noticeable trolley car tracks running right up the middle
of the street! Two questions....1) was that the only episode that used that
particular Desilu backlot street scene?....and 2) was there ever any other
indication of mass transit within the town of Mayberry?
P.S.--I don't care what anybody says, I think Ellie was Andy's best girl!

Subject: B+W vs. Color
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello again!
I know the subject of the B+W vs the color episodes has been done to
death, but I think I may know one reason why more people prefer the B+W. You
see, Barney's character was the one to get suspicious of everyone all the
time (like the stranger in town, etc.). After Don Knotts left the show, there
really wasn't a character to carry that angle of the scripts except for Andy.
Nowhere is that more evident than in the episode in which Andy frets over the
mystery of Helen's arrest. Think of how that (and many other color episodes)
would have played out much differently with Barney being the suspicious one,
and Andy valiantly defending his girl. But with Don gone, there were times
when Andy had to be both Andy and Barney in one character, which had the
unfortunate side effect of adding a slightly mistrusting and suspicious spin
to our beloved Sheriff Taylor. I'm sure it had to be done to carry the
scripts, but I think that might be the major difference between the B+W and
color episodes. Any other theories out there?

I agree that the BW episodes of TAGS are the best and it is true that when
Mr. Knotts left, it hurt the show, but Mayberry is Mayberry and its soul
warming and fun no matter what.
