Any chance the breakdown Paul Harvey mentioned was the Treasury agent in The
Gold Truck? We've always heard the fellow in one of the shots got sick and
had to be replaced by Rance Howard in the rest of the scenes.

TAGS fans,

The round window--if it is indeed the same one we see in Mayberry--appears
several times on the Dick Van Dyke show in episodes where they have
"flashbacks" to Rob's early days of coming to work for Alan Brady. It's
right behind the desk that Buddy and Sally share. Both DVD and TAGS were
Danny Thomas Productions, so it would seem possible that that window was
just in the prop department.

I think it is "at the switchboard", you know "Sarah at the Switchboard". Sorry
I am just in a great Mayberry mood today!

"Somebody asked about where ELSE that famous Oval Window might have turned
up.

I saw it in an old Dick Van Dyke episode. Funny thing, though, DVDyke show
did not use the same studios, did they?; yet, I saw THAT window!"

Yes, it's quite likely the same window. Props were often shared when
convenient for the production company. The Desilu Cahuenga Studios (now
Ren-Mar Studios) were very prolific during that time. Their nine soundstages
produced "The Andy Griffith Show" (stages 1 and 2), "The Dick Van Dyke
Show", "Gomer Pyle,USMC", "The Danny Thomas Show", Hogan's Heroes", "My
Three Sons", and "I Spy" during this time. I have an aerial photo of the
studios taken in the early 60's and you can easily count the nine
soundstages lined along the outer perimeter of the city block. It's hard to
believe that one could have been walking along the sidewalk on Lillian Way
or Cahuenga adjacent to the wall of the soundstage and been perhaps less
than 50 feet from Andy's desk in the courthouse.

>>A particular "day player" had just begun to speak his lines, the part of
an FBI agent ... and he began to speak in less and less understandable
phrases. As the other actors watched, he began to sob, crying and saying
"I'm so sorry..."

I didn't hear Paul Harvey's program, but it sounds like he's referring to
something that happened during the filming of "A Black Day for Mayberry"
(the gold truck episode). The actor was replaced at the last minute by
Rance Howard, who was normally on the set every day anyway. BTW, the
character was from the U.S. Treasury, not the FBI.

When the various camera angles were edited together, a continuity error was
left in. When Opie enters the courthouse (ironically, he's looking for his
"Paw,") he walks past the two agents seated by the door. In this shot, the
original actor is there (he's wearing a hat). For the rest of the scene,
Rance Howard is playing the part. If not for VCRs, it's very likely this
error would never have been noticed.

Both "TAGS" and "Dick Van Dyke" were filmed at the Desilu Studios. "TAGS" used
one of the Desilu soundstages for its interior shots (exteriors filmed at 40
Acres in Culver City); "DVD" was filmed before a live audience on a converted
soundstage/auditorium setup. And both series were produced by Sheldon Leonard
and Danny Thomas. The oval window is probably one of many instances were
certain props or set pieces went before both series' cameras.

Hey To All

Saw just a piece of a color episode monday - Otis the Deputy #204 -
Haven't seen that one in a while.

When Otis & Howard drove out to rescue Andy, I saw them sitting in a
gold colored car - from the side shot it looked like a 1964 (maybe a
'63) full size Chevrolet - I was only half watching the earlier shot
that showed the grille.

Andybody else got a "trained notice" on this. I always refer to the
1959 Chevy and the Volkswagen seen around town at various times in the
BW eps as the few non Ford products, but I sure didnt remember that
Howard owned a Chevy. I should catch the color episodes more often if I
want to maintain my TN status, I guess.

Can't remember the exact episode, but Andy told Opie to "Do a good day's
work and act like SOME-body" as he sent Ope out the door for school. I
send my kids out the same way most days.

Re: the other comment, maybe I SHOULD tell them exactly which Some-body

This story is told as to why the agent we first seeat the beginning of
"A Black Day for Mayberry" (Gold Truck Episode)is replaced with Rance
Howard at the beginning of the show. He would have handy as he would
have been on the set with Ronnie and played other "day player" parts as
well.

I'll bet you get almost as many replies on this one as the "Marconi"
question.

I think that Rafe Hollister was the only person to "talk ugly" on TAGS.
It was the time that he was chosen for the big "Musicaal!" Andy was
trying to give Rafe a suit.....and he was telling Rafe that the County
forgot to give a prisoner a suit of clothes when he was released.....Andy
told him the date.....and that the prisoner was taken in for
moonshining...then Rafe said......"Why _ _ _ _ that was me!"

Didn't edit it out....and it wasn't THAT bad.....just didn't expect to
hear that on TAGS.

Of course....someone as rough as Rafe you might expect that.....he does
clean up well though!

On a recent visit to Hollywood, I was lucky enough to have lunch with Rance
and Clint Howard. While talking with Rance, I mentioned how I am a "Western
film" nut and jokingly mentioned that he should have Ron do a western. Now,
I don't claim to have any pull with Hollywoods greatest director but, I heard
this morning that Ron Howard is scouting locations in Texas to shoot a film
about the Alamo. SHAZAM!!!

Ron Howard is here in Texas, promoting the filming of
his upcoming flick about the Alamo (didn't see George
"Tex" Foley with him). Let's hope Opie gets the story
right, cause I don't think Aunt Bee would come to see
his picture, even if it did have Rock Hudson in it!
(my, how Aunt Bee would have been shocked about that
guy) I can just picture bald Opie walking around San
Antonio with his hands in front of him making like a
screen, like that Hollywood producer did when he came
to town. Hope they don't wanna cut down any of our
oak trees, or bake pies, and have the Mayor's daughter
sing "Flow gently, sweet af'tn" to him. (in espanol,
no less)

It also appears that there is a conspiracy against "A
Beautiful Mind", for the Oscar. They interviewed
Ron(nie) Howard, and he was very upset about it. I
think he ought to get Pa, the Darlings, and Ernest T.,
and haul those Hollywood rabble-rousers out to the
"old fashioned" woodshed behind the courthouse, and
give 'em what fer. They beat everything, you know
that?

This is in response to Andy saying the "H#ll word. Though Andy may have never
used such an ugly word I can think of at least two examples where others on the
show did. One was when Rafe Hollister was explainin' about not moonshining
anymore. He made the statement "H.E.double toothpicks that was me!". Another
time even ole Jud used the word for what beavers make. Sorry I can't recall the
exact episode he made that comment on. Just goes to show you that even though
his lessons may be "dry as dust" the reverend needs to keep preaching about sin
even in Mayberry.
