David from Columbia, SC says he was in Clemson to watch the Tigers and the
Gamecocks play a little baseball (maybe Andy was the ump) and heard a
commercial for Goober's. I'm just up the road in Greenville, and I've never
heard of the place, but you know how these college towns are - probably some
sort of eatin' establishment.

Just so everybody else will know the caliber of baseball we play around here
and why you'd drive way over a hundred miles to see a college baseball game,
Clemson is rated #1 and South Carolina is #3 so you're talking serious
talent when these 2 teams take the field.

Sorry, but I'm politely not buying the "same Juanita theory" for these
reasons

A) In the episode about Opie's newspaper, Barney himself referred to
another couple with such an age disparity as "May and December" (at least I
think it was Barney). As illustrated in that episode, people in small
town's talk, and if the Deputy was dating the Boss's young daughter...whoa
would people talk, and Andy would surely intervene.

2) When Charlene Darling made a play for Andy, Andy refused saying
something like "I'm old enough to be your father". Andy was about Barney's
age and Charlene, about Juanita Pike's. It may have been commonplace in the
mountains...but not honorable in town in that era.

C) I think it's more a case of the fact that they used names over and over
again. Juanita's last name, Beasley (also unusual) was used for 5 other
characters not counting Goober in that one episode. (the Andy Griffith Show
Book by Beck and Clark). First names like Karen and Ed (Edgar, Eddie etc)
were also used a lot.

4) He want to marry Mrs. Bendlemright...I mean Lelma Thou.

Did I not the see the bank guard (Asa Bascomb) playing a vet on a color
episode where Opie was supposed to take care of the milkman's horse. We all
remember Barney's famous line about no security at the Mayberry Security
Bank and showing Asa what "bullet maintenance" was. Do we have a name for
this gentleman?

Lots of luck to you and yours.

We often speak (or write) about our favorite
things on TAGS, but I was wondering what others
think some of the worst episodes were.In my
opinion one of the worst scripts on TAGS was the
one when Howard decided to move to a Carribbean
island, became lonely for his Mayberry friends,
and then moved back home. What are other opinions
about this? Dean from Indianapolis

It could be that Josh had taken a few elocution lessons from Eleanora

give Barney an "A" in breathing (and make him solo material), she certainly
could make a Mayberry boy sound Back Bay Boston!

What did Barney mean when he said "Bread and Butter", in the episode where
barney catches the
same criminal twice, criminal says, "I'll get you for this, deputy". Can't
rememeber the name of the episode.
He said "Bread and Butter" to andy just after they got into the woods to
start there manhunt.

the same Juanita that Barney dated>>

Not a chance, Baby. Barney's (and everyone's) Juanita was Juanita BEASLEY.
Besides, with a voice that could be mistaken for Frank's - she couldn't have
possibly sung "Flow Gently Sweet Afton" in such a delightful soprano voice -
such vibrato. BTW - has anyone heard Nickel Creek's version of "Flow
Gently Sweet Afton"? John Masters would have thought he had died and gone to

I like all of the episodes, but I will respond to the annoying thread
with this.

I'm not going to break rule #2 but I have often said that I just cant
take too well to the end of episode 69 - Andy and the New Mayor - it
just kinda lays on my chest. That's the one where Andy lets Jess out of
jail temporarily and the new mayor is upset about it. I like the
episode, but the whole deal of the bear treeing Mr. Morgan and Mayor
Pike's torn clothes and the bear ending up in the squadcar is just a bit
too slapstick and over the top for me.

I know our esteemed Mr. Bullock and his partner Mr. Saffian wrote that
episode and I don't want to be critical, I just don't think the final
scene fits the usual style of the show.

they not only left off the epilogue, they edited out
several scenes.

Also, did TAGS ever address Floyd's leaving Mayberry?
Emmett is o.k., but I sure miss Floyd.

To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I haven't read my digest in a little while, so forgive
me if I bring up something that's already been
mentioned.

Paul Harvey had a story about Ron Howard and "A
Beautiful Mind" on his news last week, I'm thinkin'
Wednesday or Thursday. He had made a comment about
how Ron Howard got to see mental illness close at hand
when he was six years old. He said Ron has seen
someone collapse in a chair, and Ron went to the man
to help him. Said it happened right in front of him.
Or to the best of my recollection, this is what Paul
Harvey said. Has anyone else ever heard this story?
Who was he referring to? I know Floyd had a stroke,
but I don't every recall Ron seeing it first hand and
a stroke is definitely not mental illness.

Can someone clarify this for me. Either I heard Paul
Harvey wrong or Paul Harvey doesn't have his facts
straight. I'm voting for the latter. I've heard a
couple of stories that Paul Harvey has told which are
not true.

Thanks,

Mr. Schwump

Ron Howard's winning of the Best Director's Oscar parallels the dream
sequence he had in the TAGS episode 'A Medal for Opie.' Andy always told him
that he would have to accept winning and losing in his life. I glad he won.
Opie promised the good Lord that if he won the first place medal for the
fifty-yard dash, he would take it off and take a bath once in a while. I hope
with winning the Oscar, he has at least washed his hands now.

Okay folks....y'all have been doing good with not breaking the rule on the
"meanest people" thing but it's time to "NIP IT!!!"

There is not to be a discussion of our least favorite episodes. I'll be
sending out "THE RULES" again today just to make sure everybody understands
that by telling me your least favorite episode is "Howard's New Life" you
very well might be taking away some of the joy I have in watching it. It
might be my favorite episode and I might take it personally that you don't
like it. (Don't worry Barney, I'm not sensitive...boy, if there's one thing I
hate it's folks thinking I'm sensitive.)

Anyway....PLEASE realize why I'm saying this and realize I'm not jumping on
Dean. I just want to "NIP IT" before things start rule breaking.

Subject: The WBMUTBB Rules
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I feel like with the number of new members we've gotten lately that it's time
to restate "The Rules" for everybody. You old-timers might want to read
through this just to refresh your memories and I think it's good for all of
us to try and remember these tried and true rules.---- Allan

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hey Everybody,

Boy, things have really been growing here in out little corner of Mayberry!!
Because of that I think it's time to remind everyone what WBMUTBB is all
about:

We all know what Mayberry is about but do we realize why it is that we all
visit there everyday? I know that the characters are great but more than
that, they're friends. We "know" these people and it's just a joy to visit
them every chance we get to watch them as they work their way through getting
locked in a cell because the door "clangs shut" or any of the other wonderful
situations they face. Things always work out in a wonderful way leaving a
smile on our faces.

Mayberry is an escape from the day-to-day trials we all face. A short trip
to a place where every body cares about one another and where we can forget,
for a while, the fact that "real life" isn't as much like that as we'd like.

I started WBMUTBB back in 1990, along with several other good folks, and
since then I've tried to make it as much like a "corner of Mayberry" as
possible. I wanted this place to be somewhere folks could go and forget
about the outside world and relax by reading about Andy, Barney, Opie, Aunt
Bee, and the rest of our Mayberry family.

To try and make that happen I've required everyone who wanted to join to tell
us a little about themselves so we could get to know them just a little bit.
After all, in Mayberry everyone knew everybody else and how can we have a
community without having at least some idea about our neighbors?

I've also had a couple of rules here and I try to enforce them.

Of course Rule #1 is...you guessed it...Obey all rules.

Rule #2 is this: Talk about the things you like about Mayberry..not things
you don't like.

I know some folks forget this second rule sometimes and they don't really
understand WHY I think Rule #2 is important so let me just give you an
example. Let's say I were to say, "Boy, I really hate Barney. I mean, look
how stupid he is and poor Andy has to put up with him." If I said that
(and meant it) what are the first things that happen to you?

First you'd feel like, "Man, that guys a jerk!" Then you'd get aggravated at
this guy talking about your Favorite character (and friend), Barney Fife.
Even if Barney's not your very favorite character, you'd likely be upset
about this guy talking about your neighbor.

I've never heard anyone say anything like that about Barn but I have about
other characters and folks forget that just because they don't like a
particular character doesn't mean that character isn't someone elses
favorite. You see, if I talk about your favorite character saying negative
things about 'em it takes your fun away.

I think that's enough about Rule #2 and I hope you all understand the rule.
It's not to take away from your fun but to encourage you all to tell us about
what's fun to you and share your good feelings with others.

We have something special here. It's something you don't find often on the
internet. No "flames", no "fighting", no "foul language." We have a place
that children and adults can come and enjoy themselves.

Mayberry is a wonderful place and I'm just glad to be a part of this little
corner of it.

Your Friend and neighbor,

Regarding the various accents on TAGS:

Not being from the South, I don't have the "ear" to know a real Southern
accent from a fake one. Not every actor is good at accents, though, and I'd
rather hear an actor speak naturally than hear a poorly "put-on" Southern
accent.

Many congratulations to Ron Howard! I 'spect it's about the biggest thing to

I had a TAGS moment while at work the other day, and no one understood it. I
am an elementary teacher, and I was discussing with the 5th grade teacher some
concepts my students were having trouble with. She proceeded to tell me that
her students were having tremendous trouble in math. When I asked her to
explain further, she stated that no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't
get her students to understand the concept of ratios. Of course, the next
comment out of my mouth was "Poor Horatio". This of course was met with a
blank stare and a general look as though I had lost my mind. I got to
thinking that if anyone who reads the digest had been there, they would have
laughed right along with me.
