I would imagine that ol' Barn meant that he wanted Andy to stick to him like
bread sticks to butter. That's what I always thought anyway.

Barn says "bread and butter" as he and Andy are walking along and a tree
(I think it was a tree) comes between them and splits them up. Its the same
principle as saying "jinx" when two people say the same thing at the same
time. Superstition and all that stuff.

"That's the one where Andy lets Jess out of jail temporarily and the new
mayor is upset about it. I like the
episode, but the whole deal of the bear treeing Mr. Morgan and Mayor
Pike's torn clothes and the bear ending up in the squadcar is just a bit
too slapstick and over the top for me."

And moreover, isn't that a Kodiak bear in that scene? He sure made a long
trek to Mayberry just to chase Jess, et al.!

The most common mistake people make in faking a southern accent is
saying "y'all" when referring to only one person. That's a dead giveaway.
"Y'all" is a contraction of "you all" and always refers to more than one.
     There, I've said my piece. Y'all have a good'n.

Thanks for the reminder about Rule #2. There's so
much great stuff. I happen to enjoy the "bear in
the squad car" episode, so, you're right, we
shouldn't knock an episode just because it isn't
our favorite.

I always thought this was one of the more underrated color episodes. Not
only is it funny (especially the fantasy sequence) but it gives an
interesting character study into someone from Mayberry that explains why he
rarely ventured far from their small hometown for any length of time. It
also shows us that Howard was in control of his own destiny, something that
wasn't always brought out for us.

Hi all,
Barney said "Bread and Butter" just as he and Andy reach the top of the hill
at the same time. It is an older version of when people say "jinx, you own my
a Pepsi" or whatever the case may be. Its the simultaneous doings of
something that starts the superstitious phrase. "Not Superstition, just
Caution".

God Bless

Lord, every single evening
As I'm laying here in bed
This tiny little prayer
Keeps running through my head.
God bless my own dear family
And others I love too.
Keep them warm and safe from harm;
Please keep them close to you.
And God, there is one more thing
I wish that you could do.
Hope you don't mind me asking:
Bless my computer too.
Now I know that isn't normal
To bless a mother board,
But listen just a second
While I explain to you, my Lord.
You see, that little metal box
Holds more than odds and ends.
Inside those small compartments
Rest all of my TAGS friends.
I know so much about them
By the kind thoughts that they give
And this little scrap of metal
Takes me in to where they live.
By faith is how I know them
Much the same as I know you.
We share in what TAGS brings us
And from that our friendship grew.
Please take an extra minute
From your duties up above
To bless those on our Digest list
That's filled with so much love.
Wherever else this prayer may reach
To each and every friend,
Bless every single mail "inbox"
And the person who hits "send."
When you update your heavenly list
On your own CD-Rom
Remember each who said this prayer
Sent up to GOD.com.

We know Barney isn't superstitious, but "bread and butter" is one of
those reflex things that people say when they are walking together and
have to separate to pass something. I think Ange and Barn were about to
pass by a bush or tree when Barney spouted that phrase.

I read where someone was asking why Barney said "Bread and Butter" when he
and Andy were out in the woods in an episode where they were tying to catch
some criminals. Andy and Barney were walking and went by a tree. Andy on one
side and Barney on the other. When you do that you say Bread and Butter. I
don't know why. I'll have to research it and find out. I remember people
doing that when I was kid. When two people were walking and a fixed object of
some kind passed between them.
I'd also like to say Good For Ron!! It's about time.

Hey Allen,

Thanks for nipping it! TAGS has no worst episodes. My favorite 2 episodes
is where Otis gets the most distinguished citizen award and Opie's
Charity is another one where is saving money to get his friend a coat.

Besides playing Asa, the security guard at Weavers and
the bank, as well as the vet, didn't the same actor
play either an MD or chiropractor in the episode where
Barney needed to grow and put on weight to remain a
deputy? Could have sworn it was the same guy. He put
Barney's head in a sling in Andy's closet. Barney
reading the paper while wearing that thing busts me up
every time.

In response to Joe Gritton's message, Andy Taylor did say that he was old
enough to be Charlene's father in the TAGS episode, 'Divorce, Mountain
Style.' Andy Griffith, in reality, is sixteen years older than Maggie
Peterson. In 1942, he was playing the trombone and a member of the Moravian
church. Fatherhood was not on the horizon yet.
