For those of you who have used the Word videos for the TAGS Bible Study,
you'll know Dennis Swanberg did the introductions for each episode. And
you'll know he "takes off" on ol' Barn and a bunch of other folks including,
Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, Billy Graham and others, but so far, no Edward G.
Robinson or Chester.

So what's the point? - ol' Swanny was at our church last night (and for the
next 2 nights) and I got to hear him "take off" on Barn with a few Nip Its!

Subject: Where is Mayberry?
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

>>>I may not be remembering this correctly, but it seems to me that North
Carolina was clearly indicated in the episode where Barney tags the
governor's car. We are shown the license plate which reads something like:
North Carolina 010.

Otherwise, you are right about how they seldom gave any clear indication of
the state Mayberry was located in. I recall that on occasion in some of the
early shows there was a reference to Mayberry, U.S.A.
>>>

They deliberately kept Mayberry's location vague during the black and white
years (the "Mayberry, USA" quote came from Colonel Harvey, the peddler of
Indian Elixir). The episode with the governor's car came during the third
season. The tag appears to read something like "NOTH CAPOLJNIA."
Apparently, the prop man modified a California tag. The paint job is rather
sloppy, but before videotape it's doubtful anyone would have noticed. BTW,
did anyone notice the state flag in the governor's office? It doesn't look
like a North Carolina flag to me.

The first episode to clearly establish that Mayberry is indeed in North
Carolina is episode 59, "Three's a Crowd." Barney is looking for a letter,
and he keeps calling Andy on the phone and annoying him. In one call, he
says the letter is from the "state's attorney's office." In a later call,
he says "the letter came from Raleigh." Two and two makes four.

A couple of days ago, someone mentioned that in episode 57, "Andy and Barney
in the Big City," the boys visit Raleigh. Actually, we don't know what city
they visited in that episode. It MIGHT have been Raleigh, but we're never
told for sure.

Just wanted to brag a little to somebody that would be interested. On
Saturday George Lindsey preformed at the Honeywell Center in Wabash Indiana,
with several Grand Old Opry stars. After the show he signed autographs and
most of the people there were of the "well Lets just say alot older crowd"
and not too interested in standing in line to get autographs. So I got to
visit with George a little. He signed 12 different autographs for me we got
our picture taken together again. As Gomer would say "He's a wonderful man"
and he has been every time I've gotten to meet with him.

Everytime Barney would say something that he thought was funny.....he
would repeat the line two times......

......"Sue Grigsby is a blonde.....from a bottle......genuine blonde right
from the bottle"

...."He buttered her up.....she egged him on...........He buttered her

So....in a way....these may qualify as doubles.....I'm sure there's

Howdy, fellow Mayberrians!
I got news. It9s big - really big! (Bein9 over here in Nigeria, this may
be old news. Coulda showed up in another issue of the digest and I plum
forgot about it.) The 3Andy Griffith Show Soundtrack2 has been reissued.
Maybe there are some of you out there like me who missed this when it
happened. I found it - by accident - on amazon.com. This is the review. I
thought this would be good enough to share...

3This album, the long-awaited reissue of the highly collectible 1961 vinyl
original, should be required listening for every egomaniacal TV star who
suddenly decides to add "recording star" to his resume. Simply put, this is
one of the best - if not THE best - TV show-inspired albums ever made. The
album brilliantly underscores the importance of music to the success of "The
Andy Griffith Show." After all, the show had perhaps television's all-time
catchiest theme (included here in all its carefree glory) and embraced an
amazing variety of musical genres.

Andy belts out four folk chestnuts heard on the show ("The New River Train,"
"Cindy," "Flop Eared Mule" and "Sourwood Mountain"), backed up by the
Country Boys, a wonderful bluegrass band who made two brief appearances on
the show (before The Dillards made their indelible mark as the Darlings).
Ange also sings "The Fishin' Hole" (with words by Everett Sloane, ornery
Jubal Foster from "The Keeper of the Flame" episode) in the
happy-go-luckiest way imaginable!

Best of all are the extended versions of composer-conductor Earle Hagen's
character themes and incidental music, masterful compositions that enriched
the program immeasurably. They are just as enjoyable, and more fully
appreciated, outside the show's context. "Ellie's Theme" is sprightly and
playful, in contrast to "Aunt Bee," which is much more wistful and
melancholy than the program version, but both are beautiful. The urgent
martial beat of "Manhunt" (unmistakably, Barney's theme) makes you want to
take that bullet out of your pocket and go looking for jaywalkers. "Mayberry
March" (later the theme to "Mayberry R.F.D.") gets the full John Philip
Sousa treatment. Finally, there's "Barney's Hoe Down" (often heard as
background music on the show), featured here in a big, proud, sprawling,
all-American arrangement that Aaron Copland would heartily approve.

The only misstep is Andy's tedious retelling of "Jack and the Beanstalk."
The album's producer (and Andy, too) should have realized that the comedian
was at his best playing off the reactions of a live audience. This
overproduced studio bit is uncomfortably humorless. (For the best of Andy's
comedy monologues, check out either "Andy Griffith - American Originals" or
"The Wit and Wisdom of Andy Griffith.")

(Trivia note: The original album cover was used as a prop in Episode 19,
"Mayberry on Record.")2

Ya9ll run out an9 gitcha a copy - SHAZAM. Only one word to describe it -
BIG!

In light of all the speculation of whether Rafe Hollister cursed or not,
forget about that and check out Jack Prince's singing on the 'Destry Rides
Again' Broadway cast soundtrack. Jack performs 'Hoop-De-Dingle' and 'Ballad
of the Gun.' "Ballad of the Gun' is a fun duet with Andy Griffith. Jack
portrayed Wash, the town drunk who was appointed sheriff of the town of
Bottleneck by the unscrupulous gambler who ran the town. Andy played the
deputy. TAGS was on the heels of this moderately successful Broadway show.

Hello Everyone,
Was watching an episode the other night, one of the B&W without Barney in
it. It got me to thinking how many B&W episodes there were without Barney. I
thought maybe just 2 or 3, but maybe not.
There's 3 that I can think of right now.
1. Gomer the House Guest
2. Andy Saves Gomer
3. Bargain Day(freezer episode)
Are there any more?

Hey everybody,

I was thankin' and thankin' under my bucket and it
helped me remember about Andy's tie wearing. If my
thankin serves me right there was a time when Malcolm
was fixing dinner for Opie and Andy when Barney came
over; Andy (you could see the sparkle in his eyes)
invited Barney to eat with them. The table was set
"nice..real nice", and Andy and Opie were in suits and
ties. Malcolm came in the room, gave Barney the once
over and asked Andy should he set another place. Andy
invited Barney to join them and Barney said something
to the effect that ..... he was just about to go home
and decide what he would wear for dinner that night."
Is that the time someone was looking for when Andy had
on a tie and Barney didn't????

By the way I recently got the book: "Everybody on the
Truck", the story of the Darling family through my
local library. They had to order in from another
library system, but it was well worth the wait. I
learned a lot I didn't know about the Darlings and
Dillards.

........got time to breathe got time for music.......

"Hi Sallie,
No worries Andy is not going anywhere! We love him as much as you do! There
have been some adjustments to the schedule but nothing so drastic as kicking
out Andy.

Thanks for watching!"

Now I call that good news! Best of luck to you and yours. Miz Sallie

Was watching Ray Bradbury's "Something Wicked This Way
Comes", on the Mystery Channel this weekend, and
spotted Mary Grace Gossage (she's nice.....real nice)
as the old school teacher who wanted to be young and
beautiful again, as well as Howard Sprague, in several
scenes in a bar.

Was watching "Opie the Birdman" last night, and
thought they were going to cut the entire dialog
between Andy, Opie, & Barney, in the house, when
Barney was explaining bird talk to Opie. They left
most of it in, but cut when Barney whistled and
translated, "Here comes a cat", "Let's run away", and
"Oh-kay". It is slightly annoying when this happens.
Like it upsets the balance of nature or something.
