In the May issue of Southern Living in an article about outdoor dramas,
including The Lost Colony, this quote appears: "It's a show about
history, and it's a piece of history itself. Andy Griffith played the
part of Sir Walter Raleigh in 1967. You'll still see him every now and
then in Ace Hardware in Manteo."

I was watching a special on one of the Networks, celebrating the network
itself (NBC I think...the one with ER, Friends, Cheers etc) and there was a
surprise nugget in there for Griffith fans.
I had read about Don Knotts being on the Steve Allen show in his book
"Barney Fife and other characters I have known". They showed snippet of
one of Don's Steve Allen show appearances as the "nervous man". He was a
"still photographer" with the initials SM (not to be confused with a
moonshine still). He was shaking the whole time. If you know the running
gag, then you might guess the SM stood for "Somebody Moved". The whole
appearance was a close-up, and his facial contortions were classic Don.
Does anyone know if these Steve Allen show appearances are any where on
tape?
>>>Hello Everyone,
Was watching an episode the other night, one of the B&W without Barney
in
it. It got me to thinking how many B&W episodes there were without Barney.
I
thought maybe just 2 or 3, but maybe not.
There's 3 that I can think of right now.
1. Gomer the House Guest 2. Andy Saves Gomer 3. Bargain Day(freezer
episode)
Are there any more?<<<<<
Well according to the book Inside Mayberry, and its "Bob Rogers" type of
chart, other B&W such shows without Barney would be #5 Opie's Charity, #8
A Feud is a Feud #20 the Beauty Contest, #23 Andy and Opie Housekeepers,
#38 Aunt Bee's Brief Encounter, #39 Mayberry goes Bankrupt, #58 Wedding
Bells for Aunt Bee, #64 Opie's Rival, #65 Andy and Opie Bachelors #71 Floyd
the Gay Deceiver, #75 the Bed Jacket, #96 the Darlings are coming, #96
Briscoe Declares for Aunt Bee, #107 Gomer Pyle USMC, the three that you
mentioned and 6 more in the fifth season!!! and Susan, I'd give it a good
wash too, if I were you.
More that you might think huh??
Thanks for the doubles Paul J!

Actually there were several B&W episodes without Barney. There were 159 B&W
episodes and Barney was in a total of (I think) 141 episodes (including the
couple of appearances he made in color episodes). I could be wrong about that
number, but I think it's close. So there were probably about 20 B&W episodes
without Barney. Right off the bat, I can think of the following:
#8) A Feud is a Feud,
#20) The Beauty Contest
#23) Andy and Opie,Housekeepers(? Was Barney in this one?)
#39) Mayberry Goes Bankrupt
#96) Briscoe Delcares for Aunt bee
#107) Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.
#158) Opie and the Carnival
#159)Banjo Playing Deputy,
I think the one with Andy's Uncle Ollie and family coming up from Louisiana was
without Barney. What were the other ones??

There are roughly 4 episodes per season without Barney (that's for the black
and white years of course -- after the show went to color, he came back for
five guest appearances). Don Knotts requested to be left out of these
episodes. He felt he needed a break after playing such a high-strung,
emotional character.

>>>Trivia note: The original album cover [from "Songs, Themes and Laughs
from the Andy Griffith Show"] was used as a prop in Episode 19, "Mayberry on
Record."
Actually, the record jacket seen in that episode is from the album "Andy
Griffith Shouts the Blues and Old-Timey Songs." They pasted the words
"Music from Mayberry" over the title.
Speaking of LPs, I'm in the process of converting by old Jim Nabors LPs to
CDs. If anyone would like to participate in this project, please let me
know. Perhaps we can do some trading or something (my collection is far
from complete).

Yes, TAGS is in Nigeria - by way of video tape. However, I have to tell,
I'm a Texas boy livin' the expatriate teacher's life in Nigeria. The
Nigerians have never heard of TAGS, although a good number of people that I
work and live with LOVE it!
There aren't a whole lot of giraffes that I've seen here. Goat, however -
that's a whole 'nuther subject! Barney and Andy's loaded goat wouldn't have
survived a day here. (Goats are raised and killed for one of the Muslim
holidays.) There's lotsa goats in Nigeria, but I've never seen one loaded!
PERSONAL DISCLAIMER ABOUT THE TAGS CD...
The review was not mine! I can't imagine a thing that Andy would do that I
wouldn't like. That review was posted to the amazon.com site. Hope I
didn't ruffle anyone's feathers with that.
Y'all keep postin'! I love this little touch of home in a far away land.
TAGS is alive and well on at least two continents!
Lotsa luck to you and yours!

...In all fairness, "I Love Lucy" and "The
Honeymooners" were #2 and #3
and neither had those "standards."
Lucy & Honeymooners had violence, i.e. 'standards'
(Jackie Gleason constantly threatening his wife,
Desi's threatening Lucy). TAGS NEVER had those kinds
of content!
The RD voter-pool apparently does not appreciate non-
violence. Plus, Lucy only shows once a day in my tv
market, TAGS twice a day. The Honeymooners not at all.
So much for popularity.
TAGS RULES!

I like the scene where Andy, Barney and Aunt Bee are searching through the
trash at the dump for the newspaper article that Opie and Arnold wrote. Andy
picks up a magazine and says uh-oh what's this "a girlie magazine" now who
would subscribe to a magazine like this "BARNEY" and then barney says he
reads it for the articles and the photography. Andy comments on the flower
on her foot.

Greetings to my Mayberry friends,
My family has been in transition with two major moves in the past year
and a half.
I didn't have the heart to unsubscribe to the digest but haven't had time
to read or
post. Things are finally settling down and I've been able to enjoy the
digest again.
Guess I've been homesick for Mayberry !! So my question to y'all
is....Are the Groovy
Miss Poovey, Aunt Bea of Orlando and Debbie Dubose(my Mize friend) still
out there??
It's good to see some familiar names and lots of new ones!!
I was SOOO disappointed the other night. My husband had never seen
Dogs,Dogs,Dogs. I told him he had to hear the giraffes speech. It never
came !! what a bummer!! I just love Barn's little speech!! Well I've
taken up enough space...
Ya'll have a Mayberry kind of day!!

I've never heard the expression "Barney-Up" before, but I've never witnessed
a shooting competition ('cept for the skeet shoot between Andy and Karen).
My guess is that it means to load a single bullet in to your gun.
How'd I do?

Don't know if you've heard about it or not, but for those that haven't, T.V.
Guide released its list of 50 Greatest Shows of All Time. TAGS was 9th
(!!!!!!!!!!!). Some ahead of it I can understand (though disagree). For
example, I Love Lucy at #2, and 60 Minutes at #6. But, Seinfield, The
Sopranos, David Letterman, and (GASP) The Simpsons at 1, 5, 7 and 8,
respectivly, is incomprehensible.
But, there is hope for TAGS to be given the credit it deserves. You can vote
on the fan pole! Sadly, TAGS is even lower here! it is 14th. We need to do
something about that! go to the link below and vote TAGS!

I'll see ya
