I'll try again............didn't get a response the first time
The question posted by Bob Bravetti, is the answer the episode where Warren
is sleepwalking, Andy and Helen are in the kitchen and Aunt Bee calls Andy
several times to come to the Living Room. When they get there they see
Warren dancing (sleepwalking) with Aunt Bee.

she is afraid the child is not breathing because Opie and Arnold gave her
blueberry pie and her face is blue?

In the episode where Barney had to get taller and gain
weight to pass the deputies exam, Andy wore a tie to
the weigh-in, albeit only to the end
of
his ribcage, and Barney didn't. Is that one answer to
the "tie"
question
posed recently. I noticed that Asa was apparently
off-duty from his job
at
the Mayberry Security Bank when he brought over the
contraption that
was
supposed to get Barney taller.
I wonder how Barney got taller with that chain hanging
around his neck!

>>>Is any anybody able to confirm my "toilet water" quote I mentioned in the
last Digest?
"Toilet water" is simply a European term for perfume or cologne. Aunt Bee
asks for toilet water at Walker's Drugstore in the early episode "Ellie
Comes to Town." The term "toilet" in this case refers not to a plumbing
fixture, but to personal grooming (as in "toiletries.")
At the 35th anniversary show in Winston-Salem, George Lindsey came out on
stage and quipped, "I'm sorry I'm a little late. I was in the dressing room
splashing some toilet water on my face, and the lid fell down and hit me on
the back of the head!"

Highway designation to honor Andy Griffith
By THERESA KILEN
Staff Writer
DOBSON -- County commissioners gave their approval this week to a project
that has been not only in the works, but kept under wraps for the last two
months -- a hometown tribute to Mount Airy native, actor Andy Griffith.
Griffith is to be honored with the designation in his name of the piece of
U.S. 52, that begins at the Interstate 74 interchange just south of Mount
Airy, and goes north to the Virginia State line. Since 1977 the road has
been part of the Pilot Mountain Parkway, which currently spans the length of
U.S. 52 from Virginia to King. Those involved in making the tribute a
reality hope that soon 10 miles of the approximate 27-mile stretch will be
re-named The Andy Griffith Parkway.
Mitch Williams, a civil engineer for the City of Mount Airy, said Wednesday
that honoring Griffith with a road designation is a project he has wanted to
put into motion for the last three or four years.
?You can travel around the state and you?ll see designations for other
famous North Carolinians -- people like Richard Petty, Billy Graham and
Michael Jordan -- and I thought it would be nice for us to recognize and
honor Andy Griffith in the same way,? he said. ?No one is trying to
capitalize on him, it?s just a tribute from myself and other fans in the
area -- a tribute that I think is long overdue.?
Williams said that ?a friend of his? put the project into motion in March,
when he mentioned the idea to a member of Gov. Mike Easley?s staff while
attending a function in Mount Airy. The staff member ?took the idea back to
Raleigh? and shortly thereafter, Williams received a letter from the Office
of the Governor encouraging him to move ahead with the project.
?This really doesn?t have anything to do with the city or downtown business
owners,? he said. ?It has no ties to tourism or economic development,
either. It?s just a hometown tribute to someone I feel should be honored and
I?ve been told that Andy Griffith gave an enthusiastic go-ahead.?
Born and raised in Mount Airy, Griffith, 75, whose career in movies, theater
and television spans nearly 50 years, is best remembered for his role as the
peaceable and down-to-earth Sheriff Andy Taylor on CBS? ?The Andy Griffith
Show,? which ran from 1960 until 1968. He later reprised the role of Sheriff
Taylor several times until 1969 on ?The Andy Griffith Show? spin-off series?
?Mayberry R.F.D.? and ?Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.,? and one final time in 1986, in
the NBC television reunion movie ?Return To Mayberry,? where he was joined
by 14 other members of the show?s original cast.
In 1986, Griffith created another popular and memorable television
character, that of the Southern, seersucker suit-wearing attorney Ben
Matlock, on his popular NBC series ?Matlock,? and reprised that role in more
than a dozen made-for-television ?Matlock? movies and twice on the CBS Dick
Van Dyke series ?Diagnosis Murder.?
Griffith is also known for his stand-up comedy -- most notably, for an early
and well-known routine entitled ?What It Was, Was Football? and has recorded
several comedy, pop and gospel albums.
Griffith still calls North Carolina home -- he and his wife live in Manteo
-- and through the years, he has been honored both locally (Mount Airy?s
community playhouse was named after him in 1975) and nationally for his
humanitarian efforts. In 1992, Griffith was inducted into the Academy of
Television Arts Hall of Fame and was presented with a Lifetime Achievement
Award by the National Association of Television Programming Executives.
Although the highway designation project has moved more quickly than he
anticipated, Williams said the change is still subject to a resolution by
Mount Airy City Commissioners and to the approval of the North Carolina
Department of Transportation.
Sam Erby of the NCDOT, who is to present the proposal to the DOT board --
possibly as soon as its June meeting -- put Williams in touch with DOT?s
main office in Raleigh, as there were questions early on about whether it
would be possible to change an existing designation.
?It?s been the Pilot Mountain Parkway for so many years and I honestly
didn?t know if it could be done,? Williams said. ?But it is a matter of
getting DOT approval, which hopefully we will. The biggest hurdle really,
was getting Andy Griffith?s approval.?
Griffith?s long-time friend Emmett Forrest of Mount Airy has collaborated
with Williams on this project. Knowing that the project was also subject to
the consent of the honoree, Williams asked Forrest if he would consider
contacting his friend to ask if the actor would give his approval for the
re-naming of the roadway.
Forrest, 74, who has been friends with the actor since childhood and
graduated from Mount Airy High School with him in 1944, said Wednesday that
Griffith was appreciative of the honor.
?He was very gracious in his acceptance and in letting us use his name,? he
said. ?And I?m extremely pleased that we are acknowledging him in this way.?
Forrest became involved in the project just a few weeks ago -- after, he
said, ?Mitch Williams did all the leg work.?
?Mitch is the point man and he deserves the credit for this,? Forrest said.
?I think it?s extremely nice of him to do it. He?s just a fan and has
nothing to gain -- he doesn?t own a business and has no political ambitions.
He?s just doing it out of his feelings and admiration for Andy Griffith.?
Williams and Forrest anticipate that a decision will be made by the NCDOT
regarding the designation within the next two months.
-------
I think it is a great tribute to Andy. Thank you to Mitch Williams and
WBMUTBB member Emmett Forrest for their efforts.
"They been needin' that highway for years."

I was listening to an old radio version of Gunsmoke and low and behold there
was Howard McNear as the voice of Chester. Pretty convincing to me. "What
are we gonna do now Mr. Dillon, Ya wanna go get a haircut, I hear they got a
new man over there and he only charges 2 bits for a shave and a haircut."
Matt Dillon: Yea, Chester, I need one.
Chester: Good! Maybe this Floyd guy can make my sideburns come out even -
ya think?
Matt Dillon: For 2 bits, he better. The last deputy I had, who was he, the
Fife guy, could never find a barber who could get those sideburns straight.

Toilet water isn't really slang -- some areas of the country may not use it
as much as others. It's just another word for cologne or mild perfume.
It's taken from the French word "toilette," which is the process of grooming
and dressing oneself.
If you're not familiar with the term, it can give you a bit of a jolt. (And
being a teacher, I've ALWAYS had to explain it to my students, who are
ALWAYS relieved it wasn't what they had thought.)
Barney "meant business" that day he made his appointment with Floyd, and
anything he could get his hands on that had some kind of fragrance to it, he
wanted!

Was it the episode where Aunt Bee was keeping the baby and it cried all the
time? The baby's name was Evie Joy, I think. And I think it was a color
episode. I hope my memory hasn't failed me!

In light of mentioning Jim Nabors' appearance in 'The Lucy Show' episode
'Lucy Gets Caught in the Draft', let's not forget Andy Griffith and Don
Knotts showing up on 'Here's Lucy.' Jim's cameo on Lucy was during 'Gomer
Pyle USMC's third season. Don Knotts guest starred on the 'Here's Lucy'
episode 'Lucy Goes On Her Last Blind Date.' Andy Griffith appeared on the
simply named episode 'Lucy and Andy Griffith.'A slew of character actors and
actresses who were on TAGS also were on one of the three Lucy shows; 'I Love
Lucy', 'The Lucy Show' and 'Here's Lucy.
