Announcer Colin Male did the opening for all eight seasons of TAGS and I
think even for "Mayberry R.F.D." The syndication package mostly has him on
the 1960-64 episodes though. The later openings still appear as edited for
the CBS daytime run in the late 60s and early 70s. It just happened that
this was one of those eps that at least in syndication, does not have his
voice on the opening sound track.

Anyone been watching the old 1970s "Hollywood Squares" reruns on GSN? Our
beloved deputy, Don Knotts, appeared on the show not once, but twice this
week. And he was just as funny as ever.

Aunt Bee in Orlando, the "costume" I was referring to is my WBMUTBB tee-shirt.
Allan has some of them available, and by wearing them, they are a great way to
show our Mayberry pride.

Kurt, the blackhearted buzzard and I saw Don Knotts and Tim Conway last fall
in Traverse City MI. They did their show "Looking Back", and in it, they
performed many skits from shows that they had done either together, or
separately in the early years. They did skits from the Carol Burnett Show or
the Steve Allan Show for example. It was hilarious and I would highly
recommend that if you get a chance to go...GO!

In response to Susan's question about others besides Andy smoking. I can
think of several.

1. Fred Goss at the dry cleaners
2. Barney Smoking in the jail cell
3. Barney smoking a cigar when he found the Quarter mill
4. Col. Harvey smoked a cigar and made Indian signals
5. Mitch Jayne (Darling boy) always smoked a pipe
6. I think there was some smoking going on at the Esquire Club.

Side Note: Betty Lynn (Thelma Lou) smokes but never on the show. She told me
that she's the only one from the show that had not quit.

Will see some of you at Mayberry in the Midwest.

>>>[Andy and Helen] end up at the Justice of the Peace in Siler City for
fishing without a
license ... Why did TV Land tease the announcer voiceover when there was
none? What years was the voiceover actually on the BW episodes?

The announcer's voice was used during the original run of the show, but not
in most syndication packages. He said "The Andy Griffith Show, starring
Andy Griffith; with Ronny Howard, also starring Don Knotts. Brought to you
by...." and then a closeup of Opie's rock was shown splashing into the lake,
and they went into a commercial. In some early episodes, Elinor Donahue's
name comes before Don Knotts.

When the show went into syndication, a new opening sequence was made, with a
shortened theme (it was also transposed to a lower key) and no voiceover.
Some of the store-bought videotapes have the version with the announcer, but
most of the time when you see The Show on TV, it's the short version.

Concerning the fishing fine, Andy and Helen were not in Mayberry County.
When Barney suggests they go fishing, he says "It's just over there in
Stokes County a few miles." Some episodes seem to indicate that Myers Lake
is in Mayberry County; perhaps it covers both, and A and H simply decided to
visit the far side of the lake this time.

What a classic episode! Gotta be my favorite....last night on TV
Land...complete with epilog! The expression on Barney's face when he
starts putting the things back in the box after he had thrown them
away.....absolutely priceless! ALSO....the scene in the backroom when
Barney...Floyd....and Goober are all sitting on the couch......what a
great visual! "Opie wished it....and it's gotta be!"

Ya'll take care.....it's a little calmer here at the school...now that the
kids are gone for the summer.......and remember......"A bird in the house
means there's gonna be a death in the family!"

I just wanted to say thanks to everybody for the digest and your
participation. I enjoy it every day, but more important it has been
pickin' me up this week as I've spent the last 7 days in the hospital.

I had surgery in Feb of 2001 to fix a long term problem with my left
ankle. That involved putting more than a little bit of metal plates and
screws inside. Last week I had an appt scheduled with my Dr. because of
a little bump on my shin near where the repair was done. Turned out it
was a symptom of a pretty good sized staph infection and I went right
from the doc's office (he's a young doc, but I trust him) to the big ole
hospital and have been on IV antibiotics ever since. Yesterday they
decided more surgery was needed to get that metal out, and it was
successful and infection appears to be under control. We were just
going to do the incant, but nobody could find a buckeye.

Anyway, no TVLAND here so haven't seen Mayberry in more than a week, but
the good ole digest has been a major day brightener. I even got one of
my nurses going on some quotes from the show. I tell you what, that
digest isn't just good entertainment, it's therapetic!

Lots of luck to you and yours

I also would like to get together with other members at the Mayberry in the
Midwest event. I agree that the best way to do it is to put on this website
the time and place and we wear our shirts if we have them.

>>I'm sure this question has been asked before, but if so, I missed it.
I was just wondering if anyone has ever read anything about why Andy
smoked on the show. It wasn't very often and when he did it was only a
few puff I just wondered why they would put it in TAGS.<<

I don't know the specifics on who sponsored the show, but cigarette
companies influenced the behavior of actors on a show when they
sponsored it. They wanted the public to see the star using their
product.

What would actor David Lewis think of this discontentment of TAGS fans over
'Batman' replacing Andy on TV Land? He portrayed the visiting Dr. Harrison
Everett Breen on the TAGS episode 'The Sermon for Today' and Warden Crichton
on 'Batman.' He might say "What's your hurry?" or see that the TV Land
programmers get some solitary confinement at Gotham State Penitentiary.

Small Footnote: In light of Barbara Stuart's upcoming appearance at 'A
Tribute to Mayberry', try to catch her in the 'Batman' episodes 'The Puzzler
is Coming/The Duo is Slumming.' She played The Puzzler's assistant Rocket,
while playing Miss Bunny on 'Gomer Pyle USMC' at the same time.

Odd Facts Known By Few
               from Barnard P. Fife

Hey, Andy. Listen to this I found in my 'Read a Fact' magazine. It
says:

              ALL OUT OF SORTS
In printer's lingo, a 'sort' was a substitution - an upside
down M for a W or vice versa, an upside down p for a d.
If you were "all out of sorts," you were out of alternate
  possibilities.

Bet you never heard that have ya'?

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi members,

In reply to the question about what a "sort" is, I am a retired printing
instructor from a tech center and the real definition of a SORT of
printer's type are individual type characters obtained separately on a
special order rather than in standard fonts. If anyone is interested,
some of these special characters include small capitals, alternate styles
of figures, swash letters, fractions, reference marks and others.

I am not sure if this helps or not, but whatever it is worth [IMAGE].

Love the newsletter!

Hello Everyone,=0D
I just watched the sidecar episode. Remember when Barney comes in
the office after being out at "checkpoint chickie". He tells Andy he
learned that when you're riding into the wind, if you put your tongue in
the roof of your mouth, it's impossible to pronounce the letter "S". It'=
s
impossible to do that at any time right? Not just when you're riding int=

TAGS was made back in the olden days before lawyers figured out how much
money they could make suing tobacco companies. I think Jack Paar smoked a
lot on the early Tonight Shows, too, among others.

Message to Laverne Defazio: Watch what you say around these parts, Laverne.
I made a similar criticism of TV Guide recently and all heck broke loose!
