Let me see if I've got it now. On the show it is always "Bee", and never
"Bea", but Francis Bavier her own self always signed "Bea" and never "Bee."
D'ya reckon anyone would care if I started refering to her as Aunt B? Or is
that maybe a little too rappish?

I wanted to mention something about the commercials at the end of TAGS. I
have a copy of one in which Anj and Barn extoll the virtues of Grape Nuts
Cereal. They are eating Grape Nuts as part of a new morning ritual included
with exercise that Barn is making them do. They even have a saying with
their exercises-- "Grape Nuts Cereal fills you up, not out, fills you up not
out. " They play this commercial true to character and in the spirit of the
show.
This and other gems is available on Goodtimes Home Video "Those Crazy Ol'
Commercials" 1986. Most of the commercials on there are poor quality, and
there is only one TAGS spot, but worth adding to any collection of vintage
TV videos. It is 30 min long and mostly black and white.
Includes the Marx Bros., Marilyn Monroe, James Dean (doing a safe driving
ad), The 3 Stooges, Lucy and Desi, Buster Keaton, and the Flintstones
(smoking Winstons!)
This video is catalog #8013 from Goodtimes and most spots are from the 50s-
60s
Just thought I would share this info, try eBay for it.

>>>Also Dan Goodwin is correct about the 'Burns and Allen' T.V. show having
the Carnation commercials written into the shows. I have a tape of the show
with the commercials in them and they are very funny.
That was a clever idea, but the problem with it was, once a show enters
syndication, they no longer have the same sponsor, and they have to attract
all sorts of advertisers (just like it is today). To air the episode intact
would be giving free advertising. Suppose you manufactured canned milk
products -- would YOU pay to show one of your commercials during a program
when a commercial for Carnation was already "built in" to the story? Of
course not. That's probably why they didn't do it that way on TAGS.
As has been previously mentioned, TAGS was sponsored by General Foods,
makers of many products including Post Cereal, Sanka Coffee, and Jell-O.
The Show's producers sometimes quietly worked GF products (especially
coffee -- notice how nobody in Mayberry ever has a bad cup of coffee?) into
the episodes, but they didn't mention any brand names.

I had one of those reality COPS shows on in the background while I was doing
some work last night. They were showing various chase scenes and the like.
Two scenes made me think of Mayberry.
First this officer stopped a drunk. He (the drunk) tried to say that "We're
from the same side of the road" because he worked for the CIA. Reminded me
of the thief that Barney matched wits with at the Mayberry Hotel. "Lookin'
for some poker action?" Then the guy gets out and the cop asked him to say
his ABCs. It was somewhat similar to the Barney Fife Nose-pinchin, Peter
Piper picked a pickled pepper sobriety test. They guy could not do it. I
could just imagine Otis saying his ABCs correctly and Barney getting them
all mixed up.
In another chase the surprised officer chasing a lady motorist reports in
over the radio' "She's as naked as a J-bird!" Can you imagine Barney in
that chase? Must have been a real "Fun Girl" Barney might have said "Andy,
you're not going believe this...shoe's got no.... "No what Barney, license??
No, I mean she's N..... "She's not cooperating? What is it Barney" "Oh
Andy I can't say it, will you just pick up Aunt Bee and tell her to bring a
blanket"

I swear this really happened. My mother was having a
yard sale
today06/1/02 I
was watching it for her while she had an errand to
run. A man came
while i was
there he asked me what something was it was made from
glass i told him
i had
no idea what it was. He said well its just 50 cents
I'll buy it. Just
like
what happened in the save the Scolby house fund.
I think the scene where Rafe buys the gadget is
precious. Andy doesn't know 'what it is', but Rafe
says "I always wanted one!"

Hello Everyone,
I always loved to see in any show where in a funny scene one of the
characters really gets tickled, but the scene continues. You know how Harvey
Karmen was on the Carol Burnett Show? That's always fun to watch. Well I know
of several scenes in TAGS where Andy wants to laugh. Maybe when he knows a
funny line is coming up, or especially some of the lines Floyd said made Andy
want to laugh. But I was wondering if any of you "trained noticers" have ever
seen any of the other characters want to laugh. I'm sure there are, but I
don't remember catching them. Help me out. I really would like to know some
scenes to look for with this in there.

Hi All,
A question occurred to me last night as I was watching the episode
where Otis buys the "horse" that gives milk. Before Otis leaves the
courthouse, Barney gives him his home telephone number in case Otis got the
urge to drink. My question is, why would Barney need to give Otis his home
telephone number? Wasn't Sara always around to direct the calls? And if
Otis could call Barney directly, why did they need Sara? Just wondering.
Anybody have any ideas?

Does anyone know why the producers of the 20th year Mayberry reunion movie did
not invite Frances Bavier? I had heard (as rumors go) that she was difficult
to deal with on the set. I had also heard that Jack Dodson was an opera
singer and actually sang opposite the great Beverly Sills, in The Marriage of
Figuro. Wasn't he also a pro bowler? Am I right about these things or have
I spent too much time at the Darlings dippin in the moonshine?

Hi folks!
Given the topic of last night's "Sunday Best" on TVLand, my
find at the flea market yesterday was appropriate. For 50
cents, I got a beautiful copy of the sheet music to "Believe
Me If All Those (Them) Endearing Young Charms." Copyright
1935 Calumet Music Co., Chicago. Hawaiian guitar solo
arangement by Nick Manoloff, Ukelele chord arrangement by
Jerry Castillo. The cover has a publicity photo of a fellow
holding a tenor saxophone. I take it that "Freddy Martin and
His Orchestra" made a popular recording of this song. In
case you were wondering, the lyrics are below.
Life just keeps getting better: Last month, up in Maine, I
picked up an antique postcard (postmark NY, Sept. 1903)
showing "The Angelus." For those of you who don't know, this
is the painting by Millet of a farmer and woman in the
field, heads bowed in prayer. A print hung in the Taylor's
living room for many episodes.
I'm still looking for the guitar chords to "A Cappella." If
you have them, please send me a copy. Have a great Mayberry
day!
Karen
Believe Me If All Those Endearing Young Charms
Believe me if all those endearing young charms
which gaze on so fondly today
were to change by tomorrow and fleet in my arms
like fairy gifts fading away.
Thou woulds't still be adored as this moment thou art
let thy loveliness fade as it will
And around the dear ruin each wish of my heart
would entwine itself verdantly still.
It is not while beauty and youth are thine own
and thy cheeks unprofaned by a tear
that the fervor and faith of a soul can be known
to which time will but make thee more dear.
Oh! the heart that has truly lov'd never forgets
but as truly on to the close
as the sunflower turns on her God when he sets
the same look that she gave when he rose.
