Before the "Goober takes a car apart" show on TVLand
last week, I noticed the announcer said to notice the
guy who says the "How did they do it, sheriff?" line
before Andy first walked in, as being Danny Thomas'
brother, and said his last name was Jenkins. He was
in many, many episodes as an extra. I thought this
guy was the unknown extra everybody kept talking
about, Johnny Coons. Have all his shots been
analyzed? I remember he was the bulldozer operator
trying to take down Mr. Frisbee's house, and he closed
the door on Opie selling Miracle Salve, just to
mention a few shots he was in.

Why do you suppose Danny Thomas and this Jenkins guy
had different last names, and what were their birth
names? I guess it's similar to James Arness and Peter
Graves beings siblings with different stage names. I
believe that Danny Thomas was Yiddish, so their birth
names could have been long sounding. Anyone have any
info on this guy?

I think Barney gave Otis his phone number just to kinda "show off!" I
mean after reading about those psychological tests in his 15 cent magazine
("QUARTER!").....anyway....I think Barney wanted to play Dr. Fife.....once
again!

Come to think of it.....the poorest guy in Mayberry would probably be the
psychologist!

Ya'll take care.....keep a good thought....and remember......

>>>My question is, why would Barney need to give Otis his home telephone
number? Wasn't Sara always around to direct the calls? And if Otis could
call Barney directly, why did they need Sara? Just wondering.

My guess is that some folks in town have those new-fangled phones, the kind
with dials on them. If you have access to one of those, then you may be
able to complete your call without Sarah's assistance (this would be
especially helpful in the middle of the night).

Additionally, even though Sarah is very efficient, she probably does not
have every phone number in town memorized. Therefore, if a caller can give
her the exact number of the person they wish to call, it probably helps
expedite things. If you just said "get me Charlie Varney," for example, she
might have to consult the directory to get his number before she could
connect you.

I didn't realize what I was starting with an innocent-sounding question
about Aunt Bee/Bea. We trained Andy watchers look for these things and when
we don't understand we ask. Just like with Barney's musical ability.
Sometimes he can sing, sometimes he can't ("Not a lick," according to
Thelma Lou.). There's not an episode that goes by without a memorable
moment or two, even in the color episodes. I still remember Mr. Tucker, Mr.
McBeevey, Malcolm Merriweather and all the others, including Gavin McLeod
as a bank robber and as the man who played Andy in "Sheriff Without a Gun."

I also still remember Frances Bavier as a outlaw in a "Lone Ranger"
episode. That was fascinating.

There's nothing better than a steady diet of TAGS, even when I ask a
(seemingly) impertinent question. I'll keep writing. Let's keep talking.

Best of luck to you and yours.

I was watching an old Dennis The Menace & there was Little Opie! I think his
name was Stewart. And I saw a sober Otis on an episode of Hazel. They were in
a bowling alley. Nice to spot them on the old TV Land classics.

Susan asked about scenes where the actors had to fight back laughter...

I noticed a good one in episode 80 "High Noon in Mayberry". Barney is
instructing Gomer and Otis on the "plain clothes" operation. Jim Nabors can
hardly keep a straight face as he delivers Gomer's line, "I gotta brown suit
that's awful plain."

I need help with two questions!
1. Did Jack Prince ever record an album or was he featured on any albums?
2. What kind of Cookie Jar did Aunt Bee use and is there any place to get a
reproduction?

Thanks!

Subject: Andy Griffith Parkway Article

WRAL-TV in Raleigh did a news segment on the Andy Griffith Parkway last
Friday and also has an article on their website at

http://www.wral.com/news/1489260/detail.html

(be patient - it takes awhile to load). The other great thing on that page
is a link to a video segment on the Wally's Filling Station replica owned by
George Boyd in Wilson, NC. George is a long time TAGS fan and a prince of a
fellow.

The NC Board of Transportation does not list the AG Parkway on their June
agenda. Let's hope it will make the July board meeting and will pass easily.

Kevin - thanks for sharing the information. The same print can (and should)
be purchased at Weaver's Deptartment Store. It is a larger size and more
importantly, supports TAGSRWC. That link is at
http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/weavers/index.htm in the Art Gallery.

Just so everybody knows....WEAVER'S carries the print of The Angelus and if
you want to purchase it ...you can find it there... and you'll be helping out
the club.

Subject: TAGS Greeting
Date: Mon, 3 Jun 2002 18:19:01 -0500

Our family just got back from a California vacation. As we were walking to
Disneyland from our hotel one day, we met a guy on the street who was
wearing one of the "Pink Floyd (Lawson)" T-shirts...obviously we immediately
knew he was a TAGS fan and exchanged a friendly smile.

That got me to thinkin' (with a bucket, of course). What one single word
(or short phrase) is best summarizes the Mayberry spirit such that if you
saw somebody on the street that you thought might be a TAGS fan, you could
say that word or phrase and he or she would instantly know what you were
talking about.

After giving it considerable thought, my top choice would probably be:

"GOOBER SAYS HEY"

Seems like this combines a greeting with an instantly recognizable phrase.

I'm sure everybody could come up with a good word or phrase as kind of a
club greeting (what kind of a club is it without a secret greeting?)...maybe
Geronomo would do it??

Looking forward to Mayberry in the Midwest (it's actually the eastern part
of the Midwest if you ask me!)...

I noticed that, too, and maybe it is so Otis could say, "Sarah, give me Mayberry
7590" to get the number dialed, or maybe Barney had had some 12-step training
where the sponsor gives the sponsee [is that a word?] his phone number.
Really, I
think it is just one of those charming inconsistencies in Mayberry.

Hello all , several days ago someone asked about the population in mayberry
,well Sunday night TVLand had a five episode block of TAGS on and in the
episode where John Masters wants to replace Barney as the soloist ( with
Gomer) Mr. Masters says something to the effect that in a town of 2000 you
think you could find a good soloist . I know it was mentioned that the sign
at the train station in Mayberry RFD said something over 5000, maybe the
population grew by the time RFD began .

Has anyone ever thought about helping their poor, deprived fellow Mayberrians
out
by making a compilation video of those TAGS commercials? It sounds like several
of you have them from different sources, and it sure would be nice if someone
with the appropriate know how could compile the known existing ones onto a tape
for the rest of us! I am sure the manufacturers would not mind their commercials
getting out into more hands as that would just be more advertising for them. I
mean, I don't even LIKE coffee and suddenly I have a hankering for Sanka!
