You're probably thinking either of Edward Andrews or Tol Avery.
Andrews played Professor St. John in "Aunt Bee and the Lecturer" (season 8).
Avery was the second Ben Weaver, "The Shoplifters" (season 4).

Teresa Horstman asked, "In 'Man in a Hurry', Andy says that Opie thinks that
blue surge grows on
trees. What does that mean? I'd like to use that line in conversation, but
I'd like to know what it means first."
I suppose Andy meant that Opie was "hard" on his suit (remember, he kept
pulling the horse hairs out of the collar) and that once it was worn out, it
could easily (inexpensively) be replaced. We've all heard the saying "Money
doesn't grow on trees" or when referring to the way most kids are when it
comes to clothes and other items we sometimes say, "They think money grows on
trees" and I believe Andy meant the same thing in this case.
"Johnny Paul says if your put a horse hair in stagnation water, it'll turn
into a snake."
"No more tradin' on Sunday."

Paul & All; how many times did marriage come up for
Andy. In today's episode, when Opie likes Miss Crump
and buys stockings for her, marriage is referred to.
Was Andy betrothed to any other gals?

I think that Paul puts earplugs in his ears so that the information about TAGS
doesn't leave his head.

Hi all you Mayberrians. In response to the questions about Opie's Horsehair
Serge suit, here's what little I came up with: SERGE is a twill weave worsted
cloth with wiry handle which shines with abrasion.
HAIRCLOTH is a coat interlining used in traditional tailoring often mixed with
horse (hence Horsehair), camel or goat with a linen or wool warp.
Maybe you've wondered about Barney's genuine whiplash cord uniform too. Well,
it is actually WHIPCORD, which is a cotton, rayon, worsted or woolen weave
twill. Its characteristics are very much like gabardine, but the yarn is
bulkier and much more pronounced. The twill is steep 63 degrees and goes from
left to right (except for cotton). It is very durable, rugged and stands hard
usage and wear. In time, it shines a bit with wear. Some times back is napped
for warmth. So named because it stimulates the lash of a whip. Uses: Topcoats,
uniform cloths, suitings, sportswear, riding habits. In cotton, it is also used
for automobile seat covers and little boys play suits.
I guess my education was worth every penny. :-)

Subject: Blue serge
Blue serge suits (the material was a wool blend) were very common at one
time, but they were strictly for "Sunday-go-to-meeting." Opie was
horse-playing after church, and Aunt Bee and Andy were concerned that he
would wreck his Church Clothes. Opie wasn't worried about it -- he was
acting like "blue serge grows on trees," and not treating his "dress-up"
clothes as carefully as he should have been.
