I guess I'm just a poor excuse for a trained noticer, but I'll be danged if I
can figure out what Margaret is talking about when she mentions drawings or
paintings at the beginning and end of each episode. Unless its one of them
there Columbia House videos I've heard tell about, of course. I hear them
things are as complete as complete can get.

Here's one: "All work and no play make Jack a dull boy." Aunt Bee says
this to Andy when they are discussing Opie's poor mark in arithmetic and
Andy's insistence that Opie play less football and do more studying.

Confession is good for the soul so I have to tell y'all - whenever I sign a
guest book, I sign my name "Lydia Crosswaithe from Greensboro NC." So......
whenever you're travelling around the country and see "my" name on a
register, you'll know that I've been there and done that. Also, when I got
arrested for dipping my beanie in the memorial horse trough - I gave my name
as Lydia so it's on my record.

Hello All,
On the subject of ongoing B&W vs. Color episode debate, I still hold that
the B&W are superior. This superiority is not only tied to the fact that
Barney is a part of the cast (thus allowing Andy to be the Andy he is meant
to be) but the B&W is also aesthetically significant.
We like Mayberry in Black and White because Mayberry IS Black and White. We
long for a place where right and wrong are easily distinguished. During the
B&W Andy is at peace with his surroundings, but the color episodes reveal a
hero who is in constant battle with the town, rather then for the town. The
introduction of color films seems linked to the change in Mayberry from the
ideal to something on the verge of the absurd.
I love every second of Mayberry screen time that exists, but if I had my
choice I would always live in the Black and White version.
Put that in his smipe and poke it!

Subject: Father's Day--Mayberry
Date: Fri, 14 Jun 2002 12:14:56 -0400
On Mother's day I selected some Mayberry mentions of mothers that seemed to
go over well, so lets focus on the Dads for this weekend.
In Mayberry we saw, of course, a classic Father-Child relationship Between
Opie and his "Pa" It was very real because we saw that at times they each
made mistakes, and disappointed the other..but in the end their love, their
family bond prevailed over any adversity. This, of course, is still a great
model for family relationships today.
So what are some of our Father-Child moments..or quotes involving Dads (aka
Pa's father's)?
1)
ANDY: this your rock? Is it somethun special?
BARNEY: Well not money-wise. That was my Daddy's rock that use to sit on
his desk. He would let be strike kitchen matches on it. That was a big
thrill for a little guy
2)
BARNEY My mother was the same way.
ANDY: I remember that about you're mother.
BARN: She had a clock in her stomach.
ANDY: Hey, Barn? These clocks you and your mother had in your
stomachs? Did the tickin' keep your father awake at night?
BARN: You wanna get facetious? You wanna get facetious about the whole
thing? Is that what you want to do, get facetious?
3)
We had other examples of "good dads" such as Lester Scobee, and his alter
Ego "Jess" in the Christmas episode. He appeared to be a great Dad.
4)
We also have not so good Dads...Such as Melissa's (Marry me Barney)
Daddy--whom Andy figured out was not really her Daddy...and the Father of
the spoiled kid with the bike, who finally saw the light, and took his boy
to the wood shed. There was Ronald Bailey's (Bill Bixby) Father who was
used to buying his son out of trouble...and Frankie Flint's dad, who
eventually let her become a girl.
5)
OK now the best part--Andy and Opie moments
...Andy apologizing to Opie for accusing him of setting fire to Jubal
Foster's barn
...Opie saying, after he was mad about the 50-yard dash, that he didn't want
his Pa to be disappointed in him
...Andy saying about believing in Mr. McBeevee "No, but I believe in Opie"
...Andy apologizing for criticizing Opie for giving a measly 3 cents to the
charity drive
...Andy and Opie becoming blood brothers
...Andy taking the tough stand to tell Opie about standing up and taking a
punch from a bully.
...keep going, there are many more

>>>If I am not mistaken, I think the Beverly Hillbillies started out black
and white and then went to color also.
That's right, and here's an interesting bit of trivia: The exterior of the
Clampett Mansion was a real house, with a large beautiful lawn in front. It
was a privately owned home, but the owner gave permission for them to use it
in the show, but he only gave them one day to shoot. So, the producers shot
lots of footage of the front of the house including the lawn, and they used
this stock footage over and over anytime they needed a shot of the mansion
exterior.
BUT, when the show went to color, the owner of the house refused to let them
come back and shoot again, so we never saw the front lawn again after the
show went to color. We saw only the driveway and the front entrance, which
of course was just a mock-up copied from the original house.

Hi - I like to turn the color off on the 'color episodes' and watch 'em in
black & white. Some are really rather cool that way, like seeing 'em for the
first time!

Didn't Bewitched and I Dream of Jeanie begin in black and white? I'm
guessing cuz I really don't have a preference but I wonder if some of us
like the b/w because you get to use your subconscious imagination more or
maybe the colours distract us from the dialogue. Whaddayall think?
Meanwhile, please explain film noir in regards to My Three Sons; I'm not
familiar with that term.

Just a note to tell all of you I am going to be away
for awhile and I will sure miss the digest. We are
headed south to Mississippi for a few days for our
annual family vacation. The little town of
Charleston, MS reminds me of our beloved Mayberry,
lots of porch sitting, a slower pace, no red lights.
It's not at all like Raleigh, NC where old Barn says
it's just go...go...go...!
I wanted to ask a favor of you all, if I could. If
any plans are made for a get together in New Castle on
July 20, please could somebody e-mail me personally
with the details?? Sometimes when I don't get to
check my e-mails for awhile I lose some of them. I
sure am looking forward to relaxing for a few days.
I'll talk with all of you when we get back.

Hello Everyone,
There are two characters in two different episodes that I'd like to ask a
question about. The first one is the episode where Barney gets all the town
girls over to Andy's house(no--not to form a softball team). There is a girl
whose name, to my knowledge, is not mentioned. She says the line "Well what
did we turn out for". What I was wondering is about her voice. It sounds
like the voice of "Judy Jetson". Anyone know? One more episode is the one
where the movie producer Mr. Harmon wants to make a motion picture in
Mayberry. His voice to me sounds like the voice of "Frosty the Snowman". I
have always wondered about this and am curious to see if anyone knows or has
ever noticed this. If not---listen to them and I think you will agree with
me. Any info would be appreciated!
"Better phone 'em Al".
