Are the Squad Car Nationals still on for this week-end? If so Can you please
tell me where they will be held. If you can tell me where they are going to
be, I'm sure I can find it. Also, the time that they will be starting. Thanks
much! Debbie B

Unless I'm mistaken, that is not the same Johnny Coons that's been referred to
several times in this newsletter. The one that's often referred to is an
elderly gentleman, not the one in the pictures that were posted.

How many episodes do you remember Early Gilley mentioned on? I think it was his
car Goober took apart in "Goober Takes a Car Apart." And i know the potato
queen rode in his convertable in the Canon episode. Where else do you
remember hearing Early Gilley mentioned?

Does Mr. Graham talk about his meetings with Jim and George in his

>Billy's autobiography is entitled 'Just As I Am.' Andy Griffith's 1997
>gospel album has the same name.

Now, hymns are something I do know a bit about. (My husband's
music minister education was worth every penny!) Billy Graham
uses this 19th Century classic at the end of his messages in the
"invitation" in which folks are invited to come forward and make a
public declaration of a need or spiritual decision.

"Just as I am, without one plea
But that Thy blood was shed for me,
And that Thou bidd'st me come to Thee,
O Lamb of God, I come! I come!

Just as I am, Thou wilt receive,
Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;
Because Thy promise I believe,
O Lamb of God, I come! I come!"

Can't you just hear Andy and Barney harmonizing to this great hymn
in the cool of the evening on a Sunday? (Just before the homemade
ice-cream is served!) Andy's rich baritone, and Barney's sweet tenor...
Aunt Bee rocking and smiling...makes me want a front porch. I live in
California, so I have a great backyard patio, but oh, how I do long for
an old-fashioned front porch! Our Spanish-style front elevation is not
conducive to an addition, either. :0(

Question: Can we name the front porch scenes? I can think of three
right off the top of my head, but I'd rather hear about them from you
Trivia Kings and Queens.
Front-porch rocking in my dreams, I remain,

Shenandoah is another song that should have been in a front porch
singing scene. I think that this time, Peggy McMillan (Joanna Moore)
should sing with Andy. What a haunting melody...We sang it in
High School Chorus competition, and yes...

That one always makes me cry!

"Shenandoah, I long to hear you,
Away, you rolling river,
Oh, Shenandoah, I long to hear you,
Away, I'm bound away,
Across the wide Missouri."

(I know I'm stuck on front porches, but if you who have them would
invite me over to sit a spell, I would get my fix and move on to the
next subject!)
My best to you and yours!

Subject: TAGS Characters in the Movies

>>> In the movie Shenandoah, starring James Stewart, two
TAGS characters at least make an appearance. "Brisco Darlin'" Denver Pyle is a
preacher, and James Best "Jim Lindsay" is a confederate POW who helps
Anderson's (James Stewart) son escape from a riverboat.

This comment makes me wonder--how many other TAGS actors/actresses appeared in
feature films over the years? Of course we know about the films made by Andy
Griffith and Don Knotts, but what others can we think of?

To get the ball rolling: Dick Elliot (Mayor Pike) was the guy on the porch in
"It's a Wonderful Life" (also starring Stewart). In that same film, Ellen
Corby ("Hubcaps" Lesch) played the part of a woman in the Building and Loan.

I heard a sound bite from TAGS on my favorite radio station today....KAAM
770 (AM)....Dallas Ft. Worth....anyway....the DeeJay played Andy
saying..."That young lady ought to be ashamed of herself!"

He worked in into his show so that it fit. 'Twas nice hearing Andy on the
radio!

Subject: James Westerfield: Bad House Guest, Bad Attorney
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I was watching 'The Lucy Show' on WUSA Channel 9 Washington D.C. this
morning and saw actor James Westerfield playing a lawyer for Mr. Mooney in
the episode 'Lucy Is Her Own Lawyer.' James Westerfield portrayed Ollie the
bad house guest and brother-in-law of Aunt Bee in the TAGS episode 'Family
Visit.' The 'Lucy' appearance aired on March 9, 1964 while his TAGS
appearance came on October 5, 1964. Lucy takes Mr. Mooney to court because
his barking sheep dog keeps everyone up at night. Mr. Westerfield's lawyer
character proved to be a bad attorney as much as he was a bad house guest.
The judge found Mr. Mooney "guilty as sin!"

The one episode that I know of where you can see a microphone going up Andy's
pants leg is
"The Darlings Are Coming" This is the very first Darling episode and if you
look at Andy's feet as
he walks up to the truck while Mr Darling is filling up the radiator you will
see the microphone cable
coming out of his left leg (left being from Andy's perspective)

There may be other episodes where this happens as well but this is one that I
know of.

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this but Ronnie Schell and Barbara
Stuart are due to be at the 'Hollywood Collectors Show' the day after their
appearance at 'A Tribute to Mayberry' in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. 'A Tribute
to Mayberry' is June 28 and the "Hollywood Collectors Show' is June 29 and
30. After working the crowd and autographing on Friday night I guess they
will be hopping on a red-eye flight to California to join Corporal Boyle for
another autograph work-out on Saturday and Sunday.

Autograph is from the Latin 'autographa.'

Mr. Schell and Ms Stuart will be at the autograph show on SUNDAY only....That

A few days ago, someone asked about all the times that Opie's mom was
mentioned. I didn't see many responses, but I guess the consensus was just
that once..during the episode when Aunt Bee is thinking of marrying Mr. Goss
and Opie asks "Is that the kind of love you and Ma had" and Andy respond
"Yes it was". Paul noted some other references to Andy being married.

I was browsing a book last night, TVLand to go, and noticed there was at
least one other mention and that was during the Danny Thomas show. In the
episode designed to created the spin-off of the Andy Griffith show, Opie
loses a turtle because someone stepped on it. Andy (in what sounds like a
very touching scene) shares with Opie that he too has felt the kind of loss
that Opie is feeling, reminds him that he lost Opie's Ma. To break the
emotional tension with comedy, Opie responds by asking "Who stepped on Ma?"
I would love to see that pilot. It was pre-Barney..but it sounds like a
typical big-city guy ends up in Mayberry jail type episode.

IF you want to see some further speculation about Opie's Ma, from an

Thanks Paul for adding to the Johnny Coons legacy. Now we know that Johnny
was indeed the Chicago cartoon guy. You are one dedicated fan to go out and
dig up that obscure movie...and then capture a picture from it! You're a
real prince. That is a decent picture of Tom Jacobs, but I think it needs
to be one with his white hat on. He is easier to pick out when he's wearing
that.

The Coons case is so nicely closed now (better than the Becker Case or the
Punch in the Nose Case) I still vote that we shift out attention to the
Schwamp case. Who is the actor what played Mr.Scwhamp? C'mon you junior
deputies...you trained noticers...we can't let this guy go nameless.
(to see a picture of the Schwampster go to Miss Poovey's website
www.misspoovey.com and look near the end of her charming photo album.
