The episode about Barney's first car (the one he buys
for $300.00, I mean $297.50? )is a little bit
innacurate. Can someone tell me why that might be the
case? In other words, it wasn't really his first car.
I bet this one won't last long, especially with Paul.

Re: Dry County? and "guilty stains" hymn

DRY COUNTY?
In Mount Airy, NC, when Andy and I were growing up there, liquor was
much discussed and cussed. The moonshiners were arrested because the
"hooch" they made was being sold without the US government getting any
taxes. The real Bluebird Cafe sold beer, and that is why most of us
younguns were not allowed to go there to eat. There were only a couple of
other places "licensed" to sell spirits. That is why most of the regular
drinkers either bought from moonshiners or went up to Fancy Gap, just over
the Virgina line, where such sales were legal.
In additon, temperance groups were still actively meeting, and the
strong presence of religion as a basic force in all our lives, led there to
be a general disapproval of the use of "demon rum." The writers of TAGS
have commented that Andy was personally involved in the crafting of every
episode. I feel it is logical that "Mayberry" handled liquor much the same
way as Andy had experienced it in his real hometown.
(Even "good folks" made elderberry wine occasionally for use as a "tonic.")
GUILTY STAINS HYMN
The hymn that contains the words, "lose all their guilty stains" was sung
by Andy and Barney in Episode #152, "The Case of the Punch in the Nose." In
their excellent book, "The Definitive Andy Griffith Show Reference,"
authors Robinson and Fernandez identify the song's title as, "Sinners Lose
All Their Guilty Stains." That is understandable, because that is the first
phrase you hear Andy and Barney sing. The actual title is, "There is a
Fountain" and it begins with the phrase, "There is a fountain filled with
blood, drawn from Immanuel's veins" and continues, "and sinners plunged
beneath that flood, lose all their guilty stains." (It was in the hymnal,
"Victory Songs" from the evangelist, Billy Sunday.)
It was one of my grandmother's favorite hymns and she had me learn to
play it on the piano. The idea of a fountain filled with blood scared me as
a child and the writer of the hymn probably intended to scare people out of
sinning. I would guess that they decided to cut out the first phrases
because of the vivid images. But it is great song to sing, and I loved
hearing the guys blend their voices on that, and the many other hymns they
use in the show. Makes me feel right at home!

Attention all Mid-Atlantic TAGS fans! William Christopher, who portrayed Mr.
Heathcote,IRS ("I love my job!") on the episode 'Aunt Bee on T.V.' and Dr.
Thomas Peterson on 'A New Doctor in Town', will be appearing in a play
entitled 'God's Man in Texas' in Mt. Gretna, Pennsylvania. The play is at the
Mt. Gretna Theatre from June 25 through July 6. Mr. Christopher had a small
role in the Don Knotts film 'The Shakiest Gun in the West' as the hotel
manager. He was a 'Gomer Pyle USMC' semi-regular. Of course, I almost
forgot:He a M*A*S*H regular. He has the distinction of witnessing Ronny
Howard's tonsilectomy on TAGS and Ronny's appendectomy on M*A*S*H.

I was watching 'Father Bless Me', on PBS last night.
It's an old British sit-com, about an elderly Irish
parish pastor.

As he spoke to the young priest in a cafe, he noticed
two elderly spinsters sitting at another table. The
Haggerty sisters. (I suppose they tie up the towns
phone system on Sunday's, talking about their feet
falling asleep).

The pastor told the young priest what pests they'd be
if they've been touching the 'elderberry wine'!

Just wanted to write in a say how much I am enjoying TVLAND's new schedule of
shows, except for cutting back TAGS ( At least they didnt take it off). Also
catchin up on the digest is always some of the best readin ever! . I have
always loved Father Knows Best. Am I the only one who loves this gem of a
show? That show always has the best story line and it's always about family
and promoting personal responsilility to make the world a better place to
live. Jim prays before every meal. Margaret is there when the kids get home
from school. (Elinor Donahue plays Betty Anderson, I used to be in love with
her). Beaver, Donna Reed, Burns & Allen, Lucy, Hazel, Waltons and a few more
excellient shows that you and your kids can watch without ever turning the
channel when it get too dirty. Are you as fed up with discusting, filthy,
corrupt, profane, gay promoting, sinful shows as I am? I'v worked over 40
years in the business world a have just about see it all. So these good ole'
shows are a real blessing, and with Church three times a week, its a good
life!

As some of you may know the drought in NC is very bad. We have a garden and
a well so we have to strike a good balance between watering the garden
enough to keep it from dying but not so much our well goes dry. Next to our
house is a horse pasture and until recently our neighbor kept 1 horse in it.
Now the grass has all died so her moved the horse. However, the horse
trough still had a good bit of water in it so I had a brilliant idea; I
would water the garden using the water from the horse trough so I dipped my
hat in the horse trough. Well actually it was a bucket. I told my husband
that I was glad Andy didn't catch me at it though I would have given a horse
the right of way if one had showed up.

On another note, tonight at choir practice we were practicing a patriotic
program we will perform next Saturday (Youngsville Ele. School, Youngsville,
NC 5pm. Be there.). Between songs I will play the flute while our music
minister gives famous readings one of them being the preamble to the
Constitution. I asked him if he was going to mess up his hair like Barney.
He laughed but we got some blank looks. I said, "you know from Andy
Griffith."

Thanks, Maria

Subject: Mule Days

I had a GREAT time at Mule Days in Alabama this weekend! Got there JUST as the
parade started! We were parking as the first squad car began to chug across
the intersection. Saw Betty Lynn, Allan Newsome/Floyd, David Browning/ Deputy,
Otis, and Ernest T.
I got to talk a while with Jim Clark, the head Goober himself.

Betty Lynn was a doll. She was grand marshall of the parade and in her cart as
we walked up during the parade. She was smiling and waving and clasping her
hands together like a schoolgirl saying, "Oh! I am having the time of my
life!" What a lovely
lady. She had a tent set up where she signed autographs.

I saw the six squad cars but couldn't catch the "race" as I had to be back in
Nashville in time for work. So, who "won" the race?

I almost forgot it rained off and on because the (short) time I was there was
so much fun!

In regard to the mysterious red-head that Barney rubbed for good luck. How
do we know for sure he was actually a red-head? The show was shot in b&w.
Why would the director have insisted that a real red-head be used why any
light colored hair would do?
