Subject: Mr. Cookie Bar
Date: Mon, 24 Jun 2002 08:48:17 -0400
I love to bake and one of my habits is, should I be cooking on Saturday, to
bring cookies to our church staff. Doing 2 services each Sunday, they
sometimes need a little snack in the middle of the morning.
And you know our Minister of Music is a great TAGS fan and a member of this
fine group. Anyway, a week or so ago, I was trying out a new chocolate
malted milk cookie recipe and got the idea of putting peanut butter between
a couple to create a chocolate malted milk peanut butter sandwich. I
wrapped several these up for the staff and took off for the early service.
After the benediction, I strolled up front to where Ron was standing, handed
him his treat and said "Have a Mr. Cookie Bar. A slender, high-spirited
person needs a sugar pick-me-up in the middle of the morning."

>>>That "dry county" thing is always confusing, but I believe it had to do
with the sales of liquor....>>>
Over the years, this topic has caused a great deal of confusion on this
list, so let me see if I can clear this up a bit. If anybody thinks I'm
wrong, fire away -- I can take it.
During the black and white years, Mayberry was a dry county. It was illegal
to sell OR make alcoholic beverages in Mayberry County, for any purpose
whatsoever. Many folks seem to think that Ben Weaver sells liquor in his
store (see "The Christmas Story") but there is no proof (ha ha) of this in
any episode. Come on now, have you ever seen any liquor in his store? Have
you even seen a character walk out of the store carrying liquor? No. What
he says to Andy is "I'd like to see how forgivin' you'd be if you had a
store that sold spirits, and half the county was cuttin' in on your sales by
making their own -- again' the law." Somehow, many people miss-remember
this line as "I sell liquor in my store" or words to that effect, but it
doesn't necessarily mean that. IMO, Ben just had a bone to pick with Scoby
about some other matter (perhaps an unpaid bill), and he used his
moonshining as an excuse to get him locked up.
Some people think that during the black and white years, it was OK to make
or possess or drink liquor in Mayberry, as long as you didn't SELL it.
Wrong again. We learn in "Alcohol and Old Lace" that it is illegal to
operate a still, and we later learn in "Deputy Otis" that if any law officer
learns the location of an intoxicating beverage, he must confiscate it and
dispose of it. In that same episode, Otis tells Ralph, "You know this is a
dry county. There ain't no drinkin' [allowed] here."
Now, by the time Mayberry turned to color, the liquor laws had been relaxed,
or perhaps repealed altogether. As far as Warren's permit goes, he was
simply reading the lines off of a standard form which was probably issued by
the state. He does everything by the book, you know.
Later on, Andy makes his own elderberry wine, which Aunt Bee serves with
dinner. Yes, Aunt Bee drinks wine in the color episodes -- she even admits
that she sometimes drinks too much (see "Aunt Bee and the Lecturer").

There were two other ladies never seen. The sisters that visited on the
phone every Sunday afternoon. They so aggravated that man in a hurry, it
made his feet swell.
Reckon what causes that?
But Juanita and Sara were the big time girls.

>>>In regard to the mysterious red-head that Barney rubbed for good luck.
How do we know for sure he was actually a red-head? The show was shot in
b&w.
Good question! It wouldn't have made much difference what color the actor's
hair was, so long as it wasn't extremely light or dark. Of course, the
script called for a CHARACTER with red hair. They named the guy "Red,"
otherwise the audience would have been confused. I'll bet some of you never
realized that Thelma Lou has red hair. She appears in only one color
episode.
(digression alert) Film makers used all sorts of tricks in the black and
white days that can't be used nowadays since nearly all films are in color.
As legend tells it, the stage blood in old horror movies such as "Psycho"
was actually Hershey's chocolate syrup. A clever trick in old monster
movies was to apply both red and green makeup to a character's face, and
then shine red and green lights on them in closeup. When the red light was
on, only the green makeup would show up on film, and vice versa. By slowly
alternating the red and green lights, the face appeared to undergo weird
transformations.
(further digression alert) For an outstanding modern-day example of film
noir, rent the Coen Brothers' movie "The Man Who Wasn't There" starring
Billy Bob Thornton. (Note: not suitable for children.) Billy Bob Thornton
is a huge TAGS fan, and has worked with Andy Griffith on a few projects.
There, I'm back on topic!

Hey Gang,
It is long-said that "Andy Taylor" had "3 faces".
Season 1: Hayseed Andy
Seasons 2-5: Wise,humble Andy
Color: Grumpy Andy
My favorite always has been Season 1 Hayseed Andy.
I loved during the episode about the desperate female
hunter Ms Ellie when Andy is telling Aunt Bee how he asked
her to the church picnic and dance. His whole being was very
jubilant and vibrant and excited during his tale.

I heard another saying on the show, where Howard gets into, The Regal Order
of the Golden Door to Good Fellowship. When Andy is talking to Floyd about
the vote and Floyd says "He's in like Flynn". I hope this quilifies.

Here is an excerpt from an article posted on the Univ. of NC-Chapel Hill fan
site (I'm a Duke alum, and followed the link from the Duke fan site, I
swear!!). The columnist decries the stereotyping [by sports journalists]
which went on during the Stanley Cup Finals. I perked up at the TAGS
references:
"I was born and raised "Downeast NC" but have lived all over the country in
a Johnny Appleseed adult life. I personally am not insulted by any of the
Mayberry/NASCAR references. A portion of my business is NASCAR-related and a
good friend, David Browning of Bristol Virgina, is arguably the best Barney
Fife impersonator on Earth. David makes a good living as The Mayberry Deputy
at festivals and such ... he is goooooood! I do love vinegar-based bbq and
enjoy a pool of grits swimming in butter at breakfast. I apologize not one
whit for my lifestyle preferences."

Another Mayberry moment; reading 'Children of
Alcoholics', the author talks about the compulsion to
drink. Even in a serious book like that, Mayberry
lightens my day!
Please, please; does anyone know the identity of the
mysterious red-head? Be it b&w, color, light colored
hair, etc.

Coincidentally, the show I was thinking about came on
tonight at 7:30 here. I had thought Andy made a
statement to Peggy in the episode where he's eating at
that fancy restaurant with her, about him and Barney
trying to drive to NoLa in an old Model-A that they
BOTH used to have. I thought he had made it sound like
they both owned it, but in seeing the show tonight, he
said it was HIS car.
So, my bad. I will go put my bucket on and sit in the
corner and thank....mostly about how easy it is to
thank under there.

Subject: WBMUTBB Members Meet before June 28 Pigeon Forge show
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hey Folks,
I would recommend that we try and get a gathering of WBMUTBB Chapter members
at the Country Tonite Theatre begining about 6 p.m. There is a concessions
area to the right as you come in the front door. There are tables and stuff
over there. That *might* be a good area to gather, near the windows as far
from the concession counter as possible. That's about the only area that I
can think of that would be a good one for folks to gather and be out of the
way of the flow of traffic.
If you folks can get there at about 6 p.m I figure that you'll have 30
minutes to visit before you actually want to go into the theater and take a
seat. I don't know if I will be able to stay over in that area that much
because I'll be "Floyd"-ing all around but I will do my best to be over
there as much as I can.
Those of you that have WBMUTBB T-shirts (if you wear them) will be a good
focus point for folks to see and make their way toward there near the
windows.
I also invite you folks to visit after the show while you're in line waiting
on autographs (if the cast signs them). You might also want to see about
meeting for lunch or breakfast or something on Saturday as I'm guessing that
several folks will be staying around for the weekend.
Don't forget that Dennis said the Mayberry Chapter is gonna be gathering at
4:30 at the Texas Roadhouse
so I recommend that as a great place to meet up with other members of WBMUTBB
as well.
I'm staying at the Baymont. Jan and Adam will be with me so if you see us
around...say "hey."
This should be a WONDERFUL weekend!!!

Hey folks,
I want to remind you that we have archives of all the posts here at the
WBMUTBB Digest and you can go there and search them or just browse around.
It's a great way to find words of wisdom by our members.
There's also The Golden Door to Good Fellowship that many of you may not know
about. It's a place for members of the WBMUTBB Chapter to gather together and
get to know one another. The talk there doesn't have to be about Mayberry.
Feel free to talk about family, hobbies, friends and just about anything that
crosses your mind.
Things need to stay Mayberry-like in attitude and any posts that are "off
color" or just plain ole "mean spirited" will be removed. I don't expect
there will be any of that but I wanted to say it up front.
The Golden Door to Good Fellowship gives folks a good place to talk about
some of those things they aren't allowed to talk about on the WBMUTBB Digest.
I hope everybody enjoys this meeting place and that it will help our members
get to know one another on a more personal basis.
Both the WBMUTBB Digest Archives AND The Golden Door to Good Fellowship (and
several other features) can be found on the WBMTUBB Chapter's Members Only
area. Just click on the link found at the site below to go to the Members
Only area.
