At 9% interest your money will double every 8 years (the 72 rule). so the
bond would double 11.7 times and have been worth more than 200K ! someone
did their math on that one.

Hate to say I'm glad that Opie isn't going to be
involved with the movie, for I fear it's going to be a
slice of revisionist history, due to pressure from the
PC elite leftist crowd, and the current trend of
immigration from our neighbor to the South. If the
movie is slanted the "wrong" way, I'd hate to be upset
with Opie. And the Daughters of the Republic of Texas
(who maintain the Alamo) would never watch TAGS again!
Those ladies are rough.
Supposedly the site for filming is to be outside of
Austin, not SA. John Wayne's version was filmed
outside of Brackettville, a desolate little town, near
Mexico. If you have ever been here to the Alamo (I
work 3 blocks from it), you'd see how difficult it
would be to film there, since it's surrounded by
modern buildings, and tourists.
There will be many more movies for RH to direct that
will become classics. Opie done good. He doesn't
need to be mired in controversy.

It's too early in the day for my brain to be working (i.e. I'm drawing a
blank on Frank's interest rate and just how old the bond is). However, at
one time I did run this through the appropriate formula and got the very
amount that Andy cited. Exactiliso. They really were gooood machines.

Some of the funniest episodes are when the characters unwittingly get
"gassed". One episode involved Otis trying to hide his bottle and dumps it in
the courthouse water barrel. This not only gets Barn, but the Mayor (Parley
Baer). There were several times Barney got "gassed". One was when his sweet
cider turned "hard". The best one was when Aunt Bee and the Church ladies took
the "elixir" and went from singing hymns, to their rendition of "China Town".
Correct me if I'm wrong, wasn't the "elixir salesman" John Deiner? John

That's a good point about $65 per month yielding 105% of Howard's
investment. However, looking at it that way is problematic in other
ways. That is, if you look at it on a monthly or yearly basis, you'd have
to know the terms of Howard's payment. Is interest involved? How long was
it going to take Howard to pay for it. $37 profit per year for how
long? After the property is paid off, a lot more of Howard's gross income
is profit. I ain't saying it's wrong, I ain't saying it's right. While
Howard doesn't say how long it's going to take him to earn that 5% profit,
I suppose it would make sense that it's per year. At any rate, I don't see
how looking at it like this can tell us how much Howard paid for the shop
(which wasn't claimed anyway, so I'm really not arguing).
Does my previously stated guesstimate that Howard paid $15,600 for the shop
sound about right for that kind of investment in those times?
Anyway, that brings up another interesting point (at least to me). If $65
per month is 105% of what it's costing Howard, Howard's cost would be
$61.90. If he and Floyd compromise for the rent to be $57.50, Howard is
actually loosing money. I suppose Howard sees it as his civic duty to take
this kind of financial hit to preserve the local culture. That sure raises
my respect for him.

I don't usually advertise much here on the Digest but this connection was TOO
good.
Since August 4th is National Friendship Day, why not drop by Weaver's Dept
Store and send your friend a copy of Jim Clark and Ken Beck's book "I'm Proud
to Call You My Friend." That's a great gift idea for you and I just
couldn't pass it by.
Mr. Weaver thought of the idea and I thought it was neat so I wanted to tell
y'all about it.

I just ran the math on a spreadsheet. If the bond was 100 years old and the
interest rate was 8.5% compounded annually, I calculated the value at
$349,000.
