Dear John Skaggs:

There's probably an unfilmed script floating around somewhere, titled, "The
Kitchen Remodeling Story." Fortunately for us, they decided not to film it.

Call me a purist. My understanding of TAGS isn't enhanced by references to
Gomer Pyle, USMC or Mayberry RFD or to a slew of sightings of former TAGS
actors who happen to be making a living on other TV shows. The Mayberry that
we love is found in THE 249 episodes and nowhere else. Everything else is
derivative. That's why "Return to Mayberry" was so unsatisfying to so many
of us. It tried to conjure up a magic that had long passed and can only be
recaptured in returning to the original episodes again and again.

We should all remember the lessons of "Man in a Hurry." First, Mayberry is
outside of the real world of "international television" and "men who orbit
the world." So, pilgrimages to Mt. Airy or hounding Andy Griffith for an
autograph won't bring us any closer to a place that's located outside the
real world. Second, like Malcolm Tucker, once you venture back to Charlotte,
you've lost Mayberry. To appreciate Mayberry, we need to focus on what is
said and done there, not look somewhere else or for someone else who happens
to look like a Mayberrian.

Andy Griffith isn't Andy Taylor; Don Knotts isn't Barney Fife. They are
actors who have real lives and careers. Why should I want to meet them when
I can meet the real sheriff and his deputy anytime I want to?

In the very early episodes, there is a closet door of some kind on the sa=

I think homeowner's insurance does pay liability in some cases, but only if
say, Andy were sued and lost. Even then it doesn't always happen, but I have
seen cases where it did.
And the adjuster could very easily find evidence to get Andy off the hook (say,
the still).

Of course, Barney's discovery of the moonshine would make Jubal guilty not only
of moonshining but also providing false testimony to a police officer--a *very*
serious offense.

To answer the question about Allen Melvin's most famous character, that was Sam
the Butcher, Alice's boyfriend on "The Brady Bunch." Interesting how he played
either kitchen or military types so often (on "Gomer Pyle" he was Sgt. Hacker,
the mess hall commander).

John, I too have often wondered about that door in the kitchen. It's kind
of like that door down at the courthouse--you know, the one to the left of
the cells--it too is there sometimes and other times it is not. I think we
have discussed this here before, but I don't know that we have ever found
an answer.

It's Peculiar....

Hello All! It's been a while since I last "spoke up," but just wanted to
share with you something that happened at my school Open House tonight. I
teach 4th grade in Gastonia, NC and I always have a PowerPoint presentation
running on my classroom computer about me, so that as the children and
parents come in they can learn a little something of my "life" outside of
school. One of the slides show "My Favorite TV Show" with a picture of Andy
and Barney standing outside the jail cell doors. As the program was running
and I was giving my "speech" to the parents, that slide came on. One of the
smaller children (about 3 or 4) saw it and got so excited. She started
yelling "Barney's on, Barney's on!" That of course sparked several
conversations in the room about TAGS. That was a subject that everyone in the
room had a connection with. Everyone started talking and getting acquainted
with each other. Isn't it funny how TAGS helps people connect?

I plan to use TAGS to help me teach Character Education this year, so if
anyone has any suggestions or ideas, please feel free to send them on! Y'all
have a Mayberry kind of day!

Raffle: Win Dinner with the Stars and/or Autographed Cookie Jar!

As part of the celebration of Mayberry Days 2002, the Surry Arts Council and
major sponsor Consumer Concepts are pleased to announce a fund-raiser raffle
for an exclusive Dinner for Two with "Andy Griffith Show" stars who are
attending Mayberry Days. You don't have to be at Mayberry Days to win the
Autographed Cookie Jar so even if you can't be there you CAN win the cookie
jar.

The catered dinner will be on Saturday, Sept. 28, in a Mount Airy house that
was a childhood residence of Andy Griffith. As a bonus, a Limited Edition
Mayberry Squad Car Cookie Jar autographed by the Mayberry Days stars will be
included in the Raffle prize.

Among the stars expected to be at the dinner are Betty Lynn (Thelma Lou),
Howard Morris (Ernest T. Bass), Maggie Mancuso (Charlene Darling), Doug
Dillard (Doug Darling), and George Spence (Frank the Boyfriend). A few more
stars may be added to the guest list between now and the drawing.

The Raffle tickets for the special Dinner and Autographed Cookie Jar are
$10.00 each and may be purchased with Visa/MasterCard through the Surry Arts
Council by phone at (336) 786-7998. Orders with Visa/MasterCard or checks
made payable to Surry Arts Council may be mailed to Surry Arts Council, P.O.
Box 141, Mount Airy, NC 27030. Tickets may also be ordered online at Weaver's
Dept Store ( http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/weavers/ ). Or you can order
tickets Mon.-Sat. at the Weaver's Dept. Store toll-free order line at
1-877-943-9439. Tickets may also be purchased in person at the Andy Griffith
Playhouse, at 218 Rockford Street in Mount Airy.

There will be one (1) winner of the Dinner for Two drawn. If the first ticket
drawn is for someone who is unable to attend the dinner (as indicated by the
purchaser in the appropriate spot on the Raffle ticket), that person will
receive the Autographed Mayberry Squad Car Cookie Jar, but not the Dinner.
Additional names will then be drawn until an Alternate Winner who is
available for the Dinner is drawn. (The Alternate Winner will receive only
the Dinner for Two and not the autographed cookie jar.)

The drawing will be held on the Playhouse grounds at 1 p.m. on Saturday,
Sept. 28.

This will be a critical fund-raiser in helping the Surry Arts Council make
ends meet as it puts on Mayberry Days for us fans. If you've ever wondered
what you could do to help out with a Mayberry event, here's your chance. By
simply buying a ticket (and encouraging others to do so), you'll be offering
important, direct assistance to Mayberry Days. And who knows, you just might
win that autographed cookie jar and, if you're attending Mayberry Days, a
private dinner with the stars!

For all the details, go to Weaver's Department Store and to the Raffle link

In regard to Layne's question about Andy's homeowners insurance covering
Jubel's burnt barn....the answer would be "No".....Homeowner's insurance
covers that individuals home only, not someone elses.......
