I'm a poor excuse for a trained noticer, but if something is blatantly
obvious, right in front of my face, I'll usually catch on. So allow me to
point out that Allen Melvin was also Barney Hefner, Archie Bunker's neighbor
on All in the Family. I'm sure y'all already know that but since no one
mentioned it yet I thought I would.

I don't think Archie ever had any trouble with him. He (Archie) must have
been a judo fighter...

Call me a purist. My understanding of TAGS isn't enhanced by references to
Gomer Pyle, USMC or Mayberry RFD or to a slew of sightings of former TAGS
actors who happen to be making a living on other TV shows. The Mayberry that
we love is found in THE 249 episodes and nowhere else. Everything else is
derivative. That's why "Return to Mayberry" was so unsatisfying to so many
of us. It tried to conjure up a magic that had long passed and can only be
recaptured in returning to the original episodes again and again.

We should all remember the lessons of "Man in a Hurry." First, Mayberry is
outside of the real world of "international television" and "men who orbit
the world." So, pilgrimages to Mt. Airy or hounding Andy Griffith for an
autograph won't bring us any closer to a place that's located outside the
real world. Second, like Malcolm Tucker, once you venture back to Charlotte,
you've lost Mayberry. To appreciate Mayberry, we need to focus on what is
said and done there, not look somewhere else or for someone else who happens
to look like a Mayberrian.

Andy Griffith isn't Andy Taylor; Don Knotts isn't Barney Fife. They are
actors who have real lives and careers. Why should I want to meet them when
I can meet the real sheriff and his deputy anytime I want to?

Dear Mr. Luttrell, Not sure PURIST is the right word. IF you pardon me for
saying, this board is for ALL fans of TAGS, and personally, I enjoy the mail
from other people about everything here, INCLUDING TAGS stars on other shows.
I think it rude to object to others mail, when you can simply ignore it. If
the moderator of the mail has a problem with it, they won't print it. While I
may not agree with everything I see printed here, I realize we all have the
right to participate without being chastised by, just another member!

>The catered dinner will be on Saturday, Sept. 28, in a Mount Airy house
that was a childhood residence of Andy Griffith. As a bonus, a Limited
Edition Mayberry Squad Car Cookie Jar autographed by the Mayberry Days
stars will be included in the Raffle prize.<<

What's on the menu? I hope it's "leg of lamb," Andy's (and my)
favorite dish!!

After I threw a coffee cup at Mr. Goob this morning, and being the Goober
that I am, I started trying to recall all the instances where there were
struggles and / or people squaring off to fight in Mayberry's version of
physical violence. Off the top of my head, I see Barney trying to get at
Gomer for KISSIN' Thelma Lou on the jaw, Malcolm Merriweather & Ernest T
Bass settling an argument over the Irish and Englishters, Clyde Plaunt ready
to give "what for" to Howard. There's the Floyd and Mr. Foley incident,
Skippy & Daphne's friend giving Andy a black eye, Opie's black eye he earned
from Billy? I know there's a lot more so put your buckets on.....

What a nice man! You know, this just shows you, if you want a good suit, you
have to go to Mount Pilot.

I asked this same question several months ago, but I never got a direct answer.
How many time can you remember Sherriff Taylor telling Opie to "Go out and act
like somebody"? I hope some of you trained noticers will help me out!
Thanks,
Flora

Gary, you are a purist, but you also make an excellent. Mayberry is Mayberry,
not anything else and nothing else can be Mayberry. But on the other hand, if
someone else enjoys following off shoots of Mayberry, there's no real harm
done.

In the epilogue for the TAGS episode 'The Haunted House' the music you hear,
later became the theme for 'The New Andy Griffith Show' which ran from
January - May 1971. This bit of music might have been utilized in other
episodes; I don't know. The 'Mayberry R.F.D.' theme also had a previous life
on TAGS. While on the subject of theme music, Earle Hagen composed the themes
for TAGS, Gomer Pyle USMC, and 'Mayberry R.F.D.' Who sang the 'Headmaster'
theme? It was Linda Ronstadt with "He's a Man."
