Subject: Andy Griffith Parkway Dedication Press Release
Mount Airy has issued the following press release regarding the Andy
Griffith Parkway Dedication Ceremony:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
On Wednesday, October 16th, Andy Griffith will return to his hometown of
Mount Airy, North Carolina to be honored by the North Carolina Department of
Transportation with a highway named for him. One of the primary highways
through town will be dedicated as the ?Andy Griffith Parkway?. Griffith and
his wife, Cindi, will be guests of honor and joined by several dignitaries
including Governor Mike Easley.
Griffith?s talents have enabled him to enjoy success in outdoor theater,
Broadway, radio and on television. Mitch Williams, coordinator of the local
celebration effort, noted, ?Throughout his career, Andy represented the
state of North Carolina, the Piedmont and Mount Airy with charisma,
unmatched charm and distinction. He has earned the respect of his
community, state and nation.?
Born to Carl and Geneva Griffith on June 1, 1926, Andy graduated from Mount
Airy High School in 1944. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in music
from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, in 1949. His recorded
monologue, ?What it Was Was Football,? his starring role in the screen hit,
?No Time for Sergeants,? and his portrayal of Sheriff Andy Taylor in ?The
Andy Griffith Show? are some highlights of his greatly celebrated career.
The commemoration of the Andy Griffith Parkway is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
at City Hall in Mount Airy. ?We have received a number of telephone calls
regarding the celebration and expect people from all over the country to
attend,? remarked Ann Vaughn, Director of the Mount Airy Visitor?s Center.
?We are delighted that the Department of Transportation has chosen to honor
one of this state?s favorite sons through the proclamation of the Andy
Griffith Parkway.?
For more information, please call the Greater Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce
at 800-948-0949.
--------------
The Surry Arts Council will have the following activities coinciding with
the event (all are free):
Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 5:00 pm - Jam Session at the Andy Griffith Playhouse -
bring a picnic and enjoy the music
Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 7:00 pm - "No Time for Sergeants" at the Downtown Cinema
Theatre
Wednesday, Oct 16 at 2:00 pm - "No Time for Sergeants" at the Downtown
Cinema Theatre
------------
The dedication will take place outside in the parking/grass area behind the
Mount Airy Municipal Building and Public Library (corner of Rockford Street
and South Main Street) and will happen rain or shine, so keep a good thought
for the weather.

Only thing: they didn't get out of the squad car, they got out of a blue
Dodge station wagon, one they never used on TAGS, so I guess we can assume it
was rented or something.
BTW the episode also has a B&W clip from the TAGS episode that was the
"Gomer" pilot, with Gomer breaking the news to Andy that he's joined the
Marines.

"Am I seeing things or was Andy's house just two doors down from Peggy's
last night? I noticed this as Andy parked the squad car behind her new
T-Bird."
Lesley, Yes that's Andy's house just a few doors away - they used that one
street on the Forty Acres lot for many of the residential exteriors. Another
example is Mrs. Wiley's house right next door to Andy's (facing Andy's
house, Mrs. Wiley's is on the right).

First we had the debate on this site about what folks called carbonated
beverages, now the Chicago Tribune had the same poll. I reckon the big city
folks are as curious as we are in Mayberry about the subject. Good day and
happy motoring.

One of our members mentioned in a post that they were coming to Mayberry Days
from Paducah, Ky. a distance of 500 miles. Now that's impressive. My husband
and I are making Mayberry Days a part of our vacation this year and plan to do
it every year. We are driving 750 miles from the western burbs of Chicago
(cymbal city). After that, we're going to Hilton Head. In my opinion, you
can't beat the South for a vacation.

I'm a new member, yet, from the beginning, a Big Fan. Since, this is all
new, I don't know how to find all the Birth dates, many are writing about???
Mayberry Days? When is, and where is this?
Sorry for such basic questions....I'm sure I will catch up.

Subject: Johnny Unitas of the Baltimore Colts
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
In paying tribute to Johnny Unitas, we must make light of the reference made
about him on TAGS. In 'Opie Flunks Arithmetic', Barney tells Opie that his
nickname in high school was "Rifle Fife", because of the way he threw the
football. Barney instructs Opie that the proper way to hold the football is
with the hand in the middle of the ball across the seams. Opie responds that
"Johnny Unitas of the Baltimore Colts" holds it at the end. (In photos I've
seen of Unitas, he holds the ball at the middle.) This episode of TAGS aired
on April 19, 1965. Johnny Unitas was NFL 'Player of the Year' for 1964. His
best known NFL record is 47 consecutive games with a touchdown pass.
Incidentally, 'Opie Flunks Aritmetic' was Don Knotts last episode as a cast
regular. When the CBS rural slaughter occured in 1971, the Baltimore Colts
changed ownership from Mr. Rosenbloom to Bob Irsay. Johnny U. was benched in
1972. He came back in a glorious fashion in his last game as a Baltimore Colt
by throwing a game winning touchdown pass in the last game of the 1972
season.

Subject: Alphabetical Listing

Greetings! I was wondering if an alphabetical listing of TAGS episodes was
every published. I know there are several published lists of the episodes by
episode number, but has an alphabetical list of the episode names ever been
published? It would be helpful to me as a cross-reference. Do any of the
TAGS reference books contain such a list?

I sure am enjoying all the repartee between the squad car seller and
others who are so clever with their remarks and quotes. I think we've
got some real talented folks in this group who could be comedy writers.
