Ditto to those who want to hear more stories about Mayberry Days...I couldn't
go, but really wanted to....Perhaps all of the stories will push me to make
SURE I can go next year!!! I have been to Mt. Airy a few times, but sure
would like to see it on Mayberry Days...Also, we stayed in "Andy's Place,"
and it was great!!!

Last week, our preacher was roaring along with his sermon when he stepped
down from the podium to make a point. He started off "You and me and
.................." I'm sorry, but all my I could hear in my mind past that
point was "Laura Lee Hobbs, we're going to be here to receive it."

The devil made me do it.

It was truly a thrill to be there this year - it keeps getting better and
better. We especially enjoyed Allan's "Pink Floyd" performance at Col. Tim's
and talking with him in line at the Western Steer at the Mayberry Days
Farewell Brunch Sunday morning. We also had the privilege of driving and
escorting James Best and his lovely wife Dorothy around town to the various
events on Thursday and Friday. They're two of the nicest folks you would
ever want to meet in real life and he can keep you on the floor laughing at
his many Hollywood stories. Looking forward to seeing them and everyone else
again next year!

Did anyone happen to tape the Harvey Bullock and Neal Brower talk this past
weekend at Mayberry Days? I did, but my camcorder battery died
with about 10 minutes to go in the talk. I'd like to get the last 10 minutes if
anyone happens to have it. I'll be glad to pay for the tape and shipping. Just
drop me a line and let me know.

Thanks,

The Atlanta paper has a column called "The Vent." People call in or
e-mail "witty" remarks about the news or life in general. My wife was
sure that I had sent in the following item that appeared in last week's
paper.(from memory)

"It is impossible to whistle the theme song from the Andy Griffith Show
and be mad at the same time."

Truer words! :-)

Hi all,
Mayberry Days was outstanding!! It was bigger and better this year than last
year and I am already anxious for next year! The new additions to the list of
visitors was great too. I learned over the weekend, from pure experience,
that all the guest stars are truly nice and kind at heart and really are
humble and happy to be there with their fans. I never had the experience,
until this weekend, of seeing James Best anywhere but on television and I
learned that he is really a very nice and humble gentleman! I really enjoyed
his presence at Mayberry Days. Howard Morris, Betty Lynn, Maggie Peterson
Mancusoe, Doug Dillard, James Best, and Harvey Bullock, they all were
fantastic!!!! They all let you know how privileged they felt to be there and
how happy they were to see everyone! I also thought it was absolutely
wonderful that the Mayors proclamation and Mayberry Days was started with
prayer. We all felt truly grateful and thankful to be there, it is truly a
blessing from God!
I also want to say a great big THANK YOU to Allen Newsome and David Browning!
They really make Mayberry Days a blast! They both do a wonderful job at
helping things to go smoothly and they have you in stitches the whole time!!!
You two are really a wonderful delight and it wouldn't be the same without
you. Thank You!!
I also have to say that the addition of Goober to the look alikes was
absolutely great! He looked so much like Goober I had to do a double take!!
He did great.
Now I'll be happier than a hoot owl if I can get a patrol car and get involved
with more things year round. I'll be pickled tink!!
Seeing TAGS on the big screen was a real treat too!!
Have a great day everyone.
God Bless
Michael

Try your local walk-in Target store on or about Oct. 1st. Locally I've
been able to get "release date promotion" prices that beat just about
everyone on DVDs. Don't assume Amazon has the best prices.

Hey, all!

I've been studying on this "abyssinia" thing ever since I first saw it
mentioned last week, and for the life of me, I can't quite figure it all out.
I can sorta remember Opie a saying it, but it seems to me that he simply said,
"I'll be seein ya." It doesn't come out sounding that odd to me. But maybe
that's just 'cause I'm from a similar neck of the woods as Andy Griffith. I'm
in upper East Tennessee, just a couple of hours over the mountains from Mt.
Airy. I know that discussions have ensued on this list about how things are
pronounced in different parts of the country, and maybe there's enough
similarities between the dialects of the North Carolina mountains and the East
Tennessee mountains that it sounds normal to me. The settlers of these
mountains were predominantly Scottish, Irish, and English and much of the
Elizabethan influence remains to this day. (What kind of name is "Griffith?"
I don't know, but doesn't it sound English?) For example, it's still common
to hear somebody offer gratitude to another with a phrase of, "Thank ye"
although it comes out sounding like "thanky." Another curious element of our
speech, and I've heard this on TAGS, is the deletion of a letter in a
word....for example, the "s" in "isn't" is often left out, making it sound
more like, "idn't." As in, "It's a beautiful day, idn't it?" So, getting
back to the topic, I'm not sure that Opie didn't just say, "I'll be seein
ya."

Now, as far as what Andy said back, I don't even remember. They say the first
thing to go is the memory....and I can't remember the second thing.

Hope all of y'all are well and happy.

Keep them cards and letters coming.

t.t.f.n.

Mark Selby.

P.S. I just learned something else: Abyssinia is a kingdom in Africa. You
learn something new every day.

>>>In watching the "Family Visit" episode, I noticed that Howard McNear was
given a credit...but in the cut version I saw he does not appear. Anyone
know what he says or does in this show?

Floyd has a hilarious, but brief, scene in this episode.

Ollie is in the courthouse pestering Andy, and in an attempt to get rid of
him, Andy suggests that Ollie might like to go fishing at Harry's new trout
pond. Ollie agrees and heads out the door. Seconds later, we hear the
patrol car zoom off with sireens a-blastin', and Andy runs outside but is
too late to catch Ollie (Andy, of course, intended for Ollie to go in his
own car, not the squad car). Floyd is sitting on the bench in front of his
shop, and Andy asks if Floyd has his car parked nearby. Floyd, who is
completely oblivious to Andy's dilemma, says something like "No, she's in
Wally's shop today. The poor girl's in terrible shape, just terrible. Her
transmission, her second gear had a whine just like a child, a crying
child." Andy wants to explain his problem, but Floyd continues "Wally
opened up her gearbox, took one look -- closed her back up again. A crying
child."

As in every "Floyd" episode from this period (B&W episodes after his stroke)
Howard McNear is absolutely brilliant in this scene. It's a real shame that
scene was cut.

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to say that I had a wonderful time at Mayberry Days this
year. I normally go up on Sat to enjoy all the festivities, but this year
I wasnt able to go on Sat. so I went up on Friday. It was so great. First
of all, we walked around and enjoyed all the sights of beautiful Mt Airy
and then as we were waiting for the Doug Dillard show , we sat on the
"front porch" of the Andy Griffith Playhouse, in rocking chairs, and
enjoyed a bottle of pop while we listened to the music. I had an orange
crush and my daughter had a cheerwine. It was delightful! The only thing
that I was disappointed I was going to miss by not going up on Saturday
was James Best. I really wanted to meet him and get his autograph for my
collection. When I went inside the playhouse to look around, there he sat.
I was so excited. He was very nice and talked with us for a few minutes
about his paintings and I got his autograph. During the show, he came in
and sat down in front of us. It was truly an enjoyable Mayberry evening!

(BL) played the young sister about 17 I think. I am glad she is
such a caring person but who else would live in Mayberry.

I hope I'm not getting my episodes mixed up, but I believe it goes something
like this:
Andy and Ollie are in the courthouse. Embarrassed and irritated as he's
trying to settle a fine with a "fire bug" who parked in front of a fire
hydrant, Andy suggests to Ollie that he go fishing and directs him to a
trout pond that will rent him a rod & reel. Ollie accepts this suggestion
but instead of taking his own car he takes the squad car and drives off with
lights flashing and siren blaring. Andy rushes out of the courthouse and
asks Floyd, who is sitting on a bench, if he can borrow his car. Floyd
replies that it's at Wally's shop for repairs and that its second gear has a
whine like a crying child. The reason this sticks in my mind is because of
a minor production glitch.... As Andy runs out of the courthouse and
approaches Floyd the camera follows the squad car down the street and you
can clearly see a car parked about 2 doors down from the barber shop -
Floyd's car from the convicts at large episode. Maybe Wally dropped it by
and Floyd didn't notice.

Mayberry Days 2002 was indeed BIG! This year's event was my favorite to date.
Harvey Bullock's presence was a BIG contribution to my warm, fuzzy feeling.
My "Happy Motoring" was in the middle of the night in the rain in the wee
hours of Friday, September 27. We rolled into Mt. Airy at about 8:15 a.m.
Meeting Harvey Bullock at the Main-Oak Emporium at 10:00 a.m. was a highlight
of the weekend. He augmented what Dr. Neal Brower signed in my 'Mayberry 101'
book by writing "Better Wishes Harvey Bullock." I gently and lightly shook
his hand after he signed my two books. I wanted to feel the radiance on the
fingers that tapped out those 31 TAGS scripts on that Royal manual
typewriter. Speaking of typewriters, there was an old, black Royal manual
typewriter on display in the Mayberry section at the Main-Oak Emporium. The
staff at the emporium could have set it in front of Harvey and have him stare
at the ceiling to relive old times!
