Some newer phones have a feature that lets you program in any tune you want
by using the telephone keypad. If you have a Nokia phone without that
feature, there are dozens of web sites where you can download any tune you
want (thousands and thousands of them). Just use your Internet search
engine to browse for "ringtones" or "ring tones" and you won't have any
trouble finding the theme. Most of these sites will charge a dollar or two
per tune (I guess the charge will show up on your phone bill - I'm not sure
how that works). They send the tune directly to your phone. I assume you
must have a phone capable of receiving email messages to use one of these
web sites.
However, if you have a non-Nokia phone, it probably won't work. I have a
Motorola, and I still haven't figured it out.

>>> ... Barney referred to his high school as Mayberry Central High. I
thought it was Mayberry Union High. If there was a Mayberry Central, did
that mean that there was a Mayberry East & West campus, as well?
By "Central High," he may have been referring to a block of grades, and not
the name of the school. Perhaps grades 7 and 8 are junior righ, 9 and 10
are central high, and 11 and 12 are senior high (just a theory).
It's also possible (even probable) that there may at some point been more
than one school in town, and after they were combined into one school,
people still used the old name once in a while. Maybe there was a school
called Mayberry Central High and a different school with a different name,
and they combined these two schools to make Mayberry Union High.

Would someone please refresh my fast-fading memory and
tell me which character was played by George Spence?
Thanks in advance.

He played Frank, Gloria's boyfriend in "A Guest in the House." This is the
episode where Andy's "cousin," an attractive young woman, comes to stay with
the Taylors for a few days, and a conflict arises when Helen thinks Andy
appears to be attracted to her. Mr. Spence actually had a substantial part,
but it ended up getting cut down to just two words at the end of the
episode: "Hi, Gloria."
Nowadays, George lives near Andy Griffith. I understand the two are still
friends to this day.

Thanks for the "Oliver Pendyke" story. This story was, to me, as amusing as
TAGS, itself! As for the Miracle Salve episode, I think it was one of the
funniest episodes Jim Nabors was in, as "Opie Taylor Senior". With him talking
in an obviously deep voice, and Barn trying to squelch his,
"over-enthusiastic" attempt! John

George Spence played the part of Frank in Episode 151 "Guest in the House."
I've said it before, but I'll say it again----you can look up any character or
actor by going to www.mayberry.com and clicking on the "Character/Episode
Database" on the right side of the screen. Fun site to look up stuff.

Has anyone ever counted all of the bachelors on TAGS? There were several
that I can remember!
Andy, Barney, Gomer, Goober, The Darlins, Earnest T, Howard, Malcom
Merryweather...
Did I miss any? Just something to think about.

Subject: Cell Phone ring---I Got It!!
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hey All,
I just wanted to let everybody know that J.J. was
right about the ringtone and now I have it too!! I
just went to www.supermegaphone.com and clicked on
ringtones and then found TAGS theme. After doing this
I had to put my number and provider's name in and then
I sat back and waited for it to arrive on my phone.
(About 15 seconds) There has to be a couple of things
right in order to get the ringtone though:
1. Your phone has to be one that accepts and stores a
new ringtone. (Mine is a Nokia 8260)
2. Your provider has to allow ringtones to be sent to
your phone through a different source. (Some companies
want you to get the ringtone through them and then
they will charge you.) Mine is Cingular
I've tried to "download" other ringtones at different
websites but it didn't work but this one did!!
Thanks J.J.
Mayberry says thanks and happy motoring!
Ryan

I, too, would like to know how to program my cell phone to ring the theme
from The Andy Griffith Show. I bet people wouldn't mind hearing cell phones
ring so much if they heard THAT tune!!
Unfortunately, Mike and I were not able to attend Mayberry Days this year
but we have enjoyed reading the messages those lucky folks wrote about the
fun times they had there this year. I was especially happy to see that
Phil Lee appeared treating everyone to his wonderful impression of Ernest
T. Bass. The combination of David, Allan, and Phil it is as good as any
comedy routine you would pay big bucks to see on the professional tour! I
look forward to seeing them together at TAGS events in the future!!
We will be at Mt. Airy on Oct. 16th to "just look at the purdy man". A
Winston-Salem, NC Journal reported that Mt. Airy's city officials estimate
a crowd of 100,000 to travel to Mt. Airy to catch a glimpse of Andy
Griffith. Sure hope our zoom lens works! See y'all there.

To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I could be mistaken, but I seem to recall in the episode where Goober buys
Wally's Filling Station, Opie reads to him out of a business magazine about
another business owner who was having trouble similar to Goober (though on a
much larger scale). My recollection was that when Opie pointed out that the
business owner was 35 years old, Goober said that was the same age, 35. I'm
not up on episode names and dates like some of my fellow Mayberrians on this
listserv, but I believe that one was at the beginning of the final season, so
would have been 1967, I think.
If I'm wrong, please disregard all of the above.

In "A Girl for Goober" (Episode #248) Goober decides to fill out a
questionnaire for Scientific Introductions. When the scene shifts to
Goober filling out the form with Opie looking on, Goober is filling in
items and saying his answers out loud. The first thing he says is: "Age?
33." He goes on to estimate that he reads 30 books a month, figuring
comic books count. Nevertheless, he's almost certainly got his age
right.

I heard a familiar voice on the radio the other day - Andy Griffith doing a
political ad for a North Carolina State Senator. According to the Raleigh News
& Observer, he has recorded a number of ads for various candidates, so as our
election approaches, it will be good to hear him again.
